  • Restarted laptop during update. Now I have a black screen with a cursor I can move but nothing else?

    Lenovo model 4446 on Vista.

I turned my back to make coffee and when I came back, there was an update happening. I thought it was some sort of malware because it just spontaneously happened with no prompting so I forced shutdown. Big mistake!

If I click shift times, the sticky keys option pops up, but nothing else works. No CTL+ALT+DEL. No F8. No F11. If I let the battery die and restart from there, it only allows me to resume windows startup which never seems to actually happen.

I've included a (crumby) video of me starting from dead battery and pressing the various buttons that I've been told I'm supposed to press. I have no idea what I'm doing. Please help me.

  • Does this cocktail sound any good?

I'm having a backyard party with a fire and barbecued food. People will be bringing their own drinks, but I'd like to have a signature cocktail as well for my guests. I was going to follow the turning season and go for something more suited for autumn.

    Kraken Rum

    Apple Juice

    Ginger Beer

    Cinnamon Stick

I've seen apple cider mixed with ginger beer, and ginger beer and apple cider both mixed with kraken, but not all together. I also wanted to keep at least the apple part non-alcoholic so people don't get completely tanked and pass out in my yard. Has anyone tried this? I'm used to all rum drinks having lime, but I don't know if it will work here. Opinions?

  • how to I prep wicker furniture for painting?

I just bought a used-but-still-lovely set of wicker furniture off of kijiji. In the photo, all of the furniture appeared to be he same colour, but the chairs are different shades of white and the standing shelf is actually a gross metallic silver.

The paint on all three pieces have a glossy finish, so simply painting over them as it will result in nearly-immediate peeling. Normally, I'd sand the surface to rough it up before applying a primer and then paint. I don't know how to evenly sand woven wicker...seems a little problematic, to me.

    So what should I do?

  • What do I use on my hard to clean bathtub?

I rent, and we have a bathtub that was reglazed...poorly. The finish is sort of rubbery, not slick. It makes extremely hard to get soap scum off of. I've tried Mr. Clean, Windex, and vinegar with baking soda. I use a scub-pad but I still would have to spend a good hour to get the thing totally clean.

I have two room mates that both work as mechanics, so the soap scum is mixed with oil and grease and dirt. It's disgusting. If I can find something that they can just spray on the tub and walls after they shower to help eat through it, giving it a scrub every couple of days wont be such a chore.

Yes, they do take turns cleaning, but they have about as much luck with it as I do. And, no, getting the tub glazed properly isn't an option because my landlord is cheap and I'm not paying to upgrade his property out of my pocket.

  • Why does garlic repel spiders?

I keep reading that spiders dislike garlic, but I can't find any information on why. Can they smell it or is there a specific chemical that hurts them?

  • Name Thriller Movies with Ave Maria playing?

I just watched Maniac (very good but hard to stomach because of the POV) and they played Goodbye Horses in one scene as a reference to Silence of the Lambs and Ave Maria in another as a reference to something else. I know that Ave Maria has been in a few horror/thriller movies, but I can't pin down exactly the scene I'm thinking of. I know it's been in Needful Things and 28 Days Later.

Can someone point out a few more?

  • Do I sign away rights before or after I get paid?

I've recently completed a design commission for a small winery. I received a $100 deposit at the beginning, and am expecting another $400 for the eternal rights to the image and all variations of it. I ended up giving over about 20 variations of the same image and am happy to never have to see it or draw it again, to be quite honest.

I just received an email with a waiver contract attached and am to have it witnessed, signed, and faxed back before I receive my payment. Is this normal, or should I be paid before I give up the rights? The contract has no mention of payment, but I do have an inbox full of dialogue which includes "send this back signed and you will be paid."

So if something happens and they decide to not pay, or that I owe them "just one more tweek" on the design before they hold up their end, am I covered?

  • How often do black widow spiders molt?

I caught a young western widow. She was all gold with white stripes a few weeks ago, but now she's starting to darken and her hourglass is turning orange. I fed her a big fly a couple of days after I got her and she was ravenous. I tried to feed her again recently, but she doesn't seem too interested even though it's been 2 1/2 weeks. I can't seem to find any sources on how often widows molt while they're growing. Should I take the food out of her tank and try again later, or should I leave it in? I don't want to stress her if she's delicate, but I don't want her to starve either.

  • Can I substitute Vanilla Almond Milk for Orgeat Syrup in a cocktail?

I'm throwing a little work gathering in a few days to send off summer with some style. I was going to do Mojitos but also wanted to try Mai Tais to add some variety. After quick google search, I found the original Mai Tai recipe by Trader Vic which calls for something called Orgreat Syrup.

Orgreat syrup was some sort of non-perishable milk substitute. It's sweet and has a distinctive almond base.

The recipe also calls for Rock Candy syrup, which is basically Simple Syrup with some vanilla added in.

So could I just use Vanilla flavored Almond Milk and Simple Syrup?

  • Does anyone know the origin of this saying?

The term "You can't have your cake and eat it too." is widely known and the meaning behind it is obvious: You can't have things in two ways that please you that are contrary to one another. You can not eat something but still remain in possession of it. I get this.

What I don't understand is why cake - of all things - used as the subject of the phrase.

I'll put aside the fact that this is an old saying and there is translative confusion with the term 'have' having a duality in that it can mean both 'to possess' and 'to eat' if it's used in reference to food. Obviously the 'have' in the phrase means 'keep' or else it would be "you can't eat your cake and eat it too."

But that's the problem. Who wants to keep cake? Cake as a decorative household item is a terrible idea. Either you have a fake cake on display which is strange unless you run a bakery, or you have a real, rotting cake stashed somewhere for decorative purposes.

So where did 'cake' first enter into the morality of contrary states of enjoyment when it's logically only enjoyed by being eaten?

  • my anti-yellowing antiperspirant contains aluminum?

I read that aluminium in deodorants is the primary cause of yellow staining on white shirts, so I wanted to try one that was formulated without aluminium. All the ones I saw on the store shelf seem contain aluminium anyway. In fact, all of the listed ingredients seemed to be nearly identical and placed in the same order for every single stick of deodorant and antiperspirant. I'm confused on why a product that contains an ingredient that creates a problem can be marketed as being the solution to its own problem.

Also, does anyone know of a good pit-stick for women that doesn't have aluminium and would be easy to find in walmart or a drug store? I felt a little bit like a crazy person standing there scanning through ingredients lists for 10 minutes.

  • What's a good substitute for Vitamin E?

After months of agony, confusion, and the general death of our sex life, My boyfriend and myself have narrowed down the cause of his seemingly spontanious rashes, swollen and seeping lips, and tenderness of soft tissue to the Vitamin E I've been gleefully slathering on myself. He's so allergic that me even pecking him on the lips causes hours of discomfort.

I obviously have to stop using it. The problem is, it's the best skincare product I've ever had. I have very dry skin that would break out constantly. Winter is especially bad. Lotion just doesn't cut it. I need to find some sort of replacement that does not contain Vitamin E. Even Olive Oil contains high amounts of it.

    Please Help.

  • What would a rural cottage contain in Germany in the 1800's?

I'm working on a pet project that involves fairy tales, but I've come across a giant roadblock as to the simple task of filling in the ambiance. Is it more likely for a modest home in this area and time frame to have running water or would a pump or well be more accurate? Is there an outhouse or a chamber pot? Would there be a metal oven or was it more common in rural homes to cook on the hearth? Would a heating oven be used for cooking or is that separate?

Any decent resource links would be much appreciated as well

    Thank you!

  • What the heck was that?!?

When I was coming home from work on the subway, I suddenly felt ill, then went blind for a few minutes. My vision blotched over and went completely out as it has in the past when I stood up too fast, but I was already standing, and it's never lasted this long. It went on for two subway stops...somewhere between 2-5 minutes. It phased back slowly, and then I broke into a heavy sweat. I was standing the entire time. I never lost consciousness, and I feel fine now. I've eaten and had plenty of fluids today.

It was as if I passed out, without ever falling over or blacking out. I'd actually be less disturbed by this if it had been a normal fainting spell. Has anyone heard of something like this before?

  • Can I make Poptails stronger if I use gelatin?

I was planning on making Poptails (popsicle cocktails) for an upcoming party. The problem with them is that they have to be weak or else they wont freeze. The suggested ratio is 3Cups liquid to 2ounces of spirit. I was going to use cranberry juice and gin, but Ive been wondering if I could spike them more if I used Jello instead of plain juice.

Jello shots basically have an equal ratio of alcohol to non alcohol, but just because they set and become firm, it doesn't nessessarily mean they'll freeze. I don't want them quite that strong, I was thinking more along the lines of:

1cup cranberry juice to 1oz gin mixxed with the appropriate amound of gelatin. Would those freeze?

No "it will probably work" or "give it a try" for answers please. I'd prefer someone that can actually tell me if it's going to work or not or what I can do to fix the formula instead of wasting a bunch of gin and time. If I wanted to dick about in the kitchen I'd be doing that instead of asking for direction here.

  • Is this a new trend or something?

There was a kid on the subway dressed in baggy jeans, hoodie, etc. He was rapping semi-quietly to himself. I was behind him, and noticed something hanging out of his back pocket. I've seen the look a lot before. It's usually a bandanna or a shirt.

But not this kid. No. He had a clean pair of white sport socks folded neatly, but hanging intentionally out of his back pocket.

Is this a thing now? The last thing that baffled me like this was when people were leaving all of the tags and stickers on their clothing.

  • What makes this shampoo more vegan than the next?

I bought some shampoo I found on sale and it specified that it was vegan. I understand that it means no animal products, biproducts or testing, but it confused me. Do other shampoos typically have animal products and biproducts in them? What are they? I'm not vegan, I'm just curious.

  • How long until the pigeons go away?

Despite my best efforts to shoo them away whenever I heard them on my balcony, a pigeon has managed to lay an egg in one of my garden pots (the only one that doesnt have a plant in it, thankfully). It's sitting there now. Hopefully it can deal with the stress of me watering my plants from time to time. It seemed cruel to get rid of the egg, so I'm just going to let the dirty rat bird have it's progeny. How long will it take for the egg to hatch, and how much longer after that for the baby to grow up and go away?

  • What is the best way to kill houseplant gnats?

Im starting a balcony garden, and have bought several small herbs from a couple of different sources. They're inside until the weather gets warmer...

I watered them last night, so of course, when I checked on them this morning, I was greeted by a happy swarm of tiny insects. All of them seem to have it, so its not a matter of separating the contaminated...even of some don't, I'd rather treat them all to be sure.

Now I've been looking through the answers (gnats are a pretty lively topic here) and have seen many solutions, few the same. So I'm here to inquire about which out of a certain few would be best.

I have no intention of unpotting all my plants, washing their roots, and repotting them in sterilized dirt. I don't know how you sterilize dirt, but it sounds messy and contradictory.

To kill the adults, should I use a plain dish of vinegar and water, dish soap and water, dish soap and vinegar, or a mix of all three? Should the container be open or covered with saran wrap with a tiny entry hole? Should I skip the whole dish thing and just tent the plants?

To kill the larva and eggs, should I use peroxide and water spray, insecticide spray, or just sprinkle the soil with baking soda?

  • When can I move my plants onto the balcony?

I'm very excited to grow a balcony garden this year, but I keep having to bring my sil boxes back inside because I'm afraid the wind and chill will kill them...I'm two floors up so there's no barricade from the wind for my little sprouts. What time of year do people normally start planting outdoors and putting out flower pots? Im in Toronto, and the temperature is ranging between 5-15 throughout this week. At what temp can I stop worrying and just plop them outside?
