Should I pay the reduced NYC parking ticket fine, or let the judge decide my fate?
I got a $100 ticket for parking in a no standing zone. I appealed the ticket because of a couple reasons. The "No Standing" sign was only at the very corner of the street and was attached to the backside of the lightpost so that from our parking spot in the middle of the street, you literally could not see the sign. A bunch of other people had this confusion because we parked in front of 5 other cars (who all ended up with tickets.) If you were to go to this location, it would be obviously unfair to get a ticket. Both my girlfriend and I got out and looked around for any signs of no parking, and we could not find anything! We only found the actual sign after we got the ticket and asked some workers nearby.
Anyway, the response I got to my appeal letter was a reduced fine of $75 dollars. It's still the most ridiculous fine! How likely is it for my case to get dropped if I decide to go ahead with my appeal? They stated it will be up to a judge to decide and if I lose, I'll have to pay the full fine. Has anyone gone through this process? How likely is it to have my appeal granted?
1 AnswerLaw Enforcement & Police1 decade agoHow do I treat my natural hemp string?
I bought a ball of natural hemp string from Michael's. It was much MUCH cheaper than the treated stuff and I figured I'd treat it myself.
When I bought it, it smelled just like a farm (I grew up on one). Kinda like hay and manure. It was also very coarse and not good for the necklaces and bracelets that I make with it.
I have boiled it down and dried it, so it is much softer and doesn't smell. I have read that to treat hemp rope, you need to break it in on a metal loop or a piece of wood. But that was rope....I have string. Hemp rope is very thick, hemp string is much thinner. It's very soft already, so do I need to even bother with this step?
Then I read to oil it with mineral oil or Jojoba. What oil would you suggest? Or, do people ever wax their hemp string? I remember that the guy who taught me how to make necklaces with hemp treats his own string, and he had a bar of Sex Wax on his workbench. I never got around to asking him and he travels well beyond phone or email contact. So should I use oil or wax?
1 AnswerDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoCamera shy makes GF mad. What to do?
I'm not always shy in front of a camera, but certain situations bother me. If we are just walking around taking snapshots here and there, I'll pose, whatever, that's fun to me.
But when it's time for a good quality picture of just me in a perfect setting, I get really nervous and anxious. I don't know how to pose, mouth open or closed, where do I put my hands, etc. I wish that the picture could just get taken quickly and get it over.
The problem is when my girlfriend is behind the camera. She is new to photography, so before she even takes a picture, she has to play with the camera and get it all set up to take a good picture. During this time, she doesn't talk to me, doesn't look at me. She doesn't make me laugh, and doesn't really try to make me feel comfortable.
I feel like the thing that makes a photographer good is that they are able to deal with different types of people. Some people hate photos. They are difficult. I come across as rude by saying, "come on, this is taking forever." Or "can you just take the shot?"
I tell her that while I should be aware of my words, she needs to practice being more of an entertainer. Smile at me, talk to me, LOOK at me (not just at the camera). Make me laugh, tell me I look great, or put your hand behind your back.
Her point of view is that when I get like this, she is embarrassed and self-conscious of her photography skills.
But as photographer, it's HER to make ME feel better, not the other way around. I'm the one having a moment captured forever. If she is so concerned about her photography skills, shouldn't she be responsible for at least trying to make me feel good about taking a picture?
2 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoWhy do my formulas randomly stop calculating in Excel 2003?
I enter data about apartments in tabs......1 tab per apartment. The info I enter are things like the amount of rent being paid, the move-in date, unit number, resident name, etc....
Once it is entered, there is a big Data Matrix at the end that shows all of these details for each unit. I use formulas so that this matrix is filled in automatically as I go. As an example, the formula to show the unit number will say ='Unit 1'!$D$3
Simple enough. It works great, but every now an then, it will just suddenly stop pulling the information....for no reason. If I go to the Matrix and double click on this unit number cell and hit enter, it will then display the formula in the cell (it said '0' previously because the original cell had no value in it). Then if I ctrl-z (undo) the unit number appears! I have to do this to every cell. Double click, enter, ctrl-z.
It's a pain! Another thing I can do is double click and hit F9, but that eliminates the formula and just enters the value. So if I go back to the unit tab and change something, it will no longer update to the matrix.
Why is it suddenly doing this to me? I've gone to Tools → Options →Calculation and it IS set to automatic. I feel like this is a bug that wants to make my life difficult.
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoAre the seats in an airplane safe?
It seems to me that if you get into a plane crash, your chances of survival are not in your favor. Logically, airline companies should be designing planes to be as safe as possible to eliminate casualties in an accident. Of course, there's not much you can do if the plane bursts into flames, but what about the seats?
I don't get into an automobile without a full seat belt that covers my chest. I don't want the top half of my body being slung into my steering wheel. On an airplane, who really believes that grabbing your ankles will secure your body in the safest way possible? Why don't the seat belts secure your entire body......specifically the most important part, YOUR HEAD?
Also, would it be logical to place the seats facing backwards? Sure, during takeoff you'll have to push yourself against the force of the plane so you don't crumple into the seat in front of you, and gramma might have trouble due to her back problems, but that's what the full body safety belt could do for you. And ok, so if you crash, the silverware in front of you might impale you as it flies at you 500 miles per hour. But wouldn't you choose your chances of living over a made from scratch airplane meal that came with a knife?
4 AnswersAircraft1 decade agoWho's responsibility is it to confront?
I'm good friends with my ex who I very recently broke up with.
I've started to notice that the drummer in my band might possibly have feelings for her. Neither my ex nor I are 100% sure, but we both sense it. She is not really interested in him that way, and I am not really ready for the drama and awkwardness that would cause.
One of our "rules" during our breakup is to get out more with friends and not hang out with each other as often. She and my drummer are hanging out this weekend alone. She's feeling weird now because we both have seen the signs that he wants more.
Who should be the one to step up and say something? Should she tell him she notices something and is not interested since it's her that he might be attracted to? Should I say something because I am the band member and it was through me that they met? Should we not say anything at all until things become more apparent, since maybe we aren't even right to think he likes her that way?
4 AnswersFriends1 decade agoFor people who know the area, what do you hate most about Fairfield County in CT?
Man, I cannot stand being here anymore. I grew up in quieter areas of CT, and went to school in Vermont where everyone is very friendly, respecting, cultured. I like a place where art and music flourish, where your friends are like family.
Moving here quite possibly is the biggest mistake I've ever made. The bars are packed with moose knuckles that just want to get some and bands that only play what's popular amongst uncultured wall street monkeys. The radio would sound better if it was tuned to Michael Jackson's "party mix." Your friends are merely acquaintances who "would love to hang out sometime" but do nothing than watch their HD tvs. And why even be friends with them? They are two-faced and never were your friend to begin with, so the joke's on you!
Anyone feel like I feel?

We are a five piece instrumental surf rock band (think Pulp Fiction music). We've done black t-shirts with jeans, and we've done white shirt/black tie.
Looking for some new ideas, something that can be put together quick, and not too expensive.
3 AnswersFashion & Accessories1 decade agoAm I wrong, or is she being childish?
Here's the situation: Your friend is sad about some things. She has said she doesn't want to drive the 30 minutes to your house. But she calls you up and is very quiet and sad sounding. You ask what's wrong. She says she feels sad and alone. So you say, "don't worry, why don't you do something to feel better?" She says she just wants to sleep. You say, "No, don't just go to sleep, how about you do something for yourself, whatever it is that makes you happy. Just get up and do it. Be selfish. You'll feel better." She doesn't want to. You try to cheer her up by talking about the funny things your pets did. You tell her she still could come over, but you are cleaning your incredibly messy room, so you cannot leave to go to her. But she can come over and hang out. She tells you, "I'm afraid I won't be satisfied if I come over."
This is where things get messed up. You ask, "unsatisfied?" She is silent, just breathing on the other end. You finally say, "Well I dunno what you want, I told you what your options are." She gets frustrated and says something mean and hangs up. She sends you a text message telling you that you are uncaring, unloving. You go back and forth with texts. She's telling you she regrets caring about you because you don't care about her. Don't ever expect to go to her when you feel sad. You are making her feel worse...how does it feel......you are not a good friend......she doesn't like you right now.......
Meanwhile you are telling her to chill out and just come over. You don't know what's wrong. You don't like being called unloving and uncaring because you ARE caring and loving. She keeps attacking you until you have to just stop listening anymore because it's been going on for over an hour.
And now 3 days later, she is still expecting you to apologize, and she thinks she did nothing wrong.
Am I really that bad here?
10 AnswersFriends1 decade agoShould we make a real CD or a demo CD?
My band has 5 tracks recorded somewhat professionally. They sound great and are of good enough quality to be on a real album (artwork on the cover, artwork on the CD, shrink wrapped, all that.) We'd sell them for $5. This will cost us $300 to make 100 CDs.
OR, we could just get paper sleeves, print the band name, tracks, and website on the CD and call it a demo. This will cost us $200 for 100 CDs.
We will probably be giving away lots of these to promoters, so the cheaper option saves us money there. However, it'll be pretty hard selling a demo cd with no cover art for $5.
What do you think?
4 AnswersOther - Advertising & Marketing1 decade agoDo you think romance has changed over the years? Why?
Think about the movie The Notebook. In the 60's, when a guy liked a girl, there was courting, flowers, dances. The man idolized the woman, treated her like a queen. Fought for her, etc. These days, it doesn't seem quite the same, in my opinion. Do you agree or disagree, and why?
I personally think romance has been largely affected by technology and media. Before TV and internet, we were not totally consumed by our own selves. We were more involved with our community. We used to be constantly thinking about finding a partner. Now, if we don't have someone, we just patch up the holes with TV, movies, drugs, partying, sports clubs, and whatever activity takes your mind off your singleness.

I can't stand it when people try to argue evolution is not real by comparing humans to modern day apes. Do people REALLY think when we said "came from apes" we mean SOME of us evolved from the exact apes we see today, and some of the apes just stayed the same as apes? SO dumb.

7 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade agoGuys, does hanging out with a hot girl (just a friend) change your interactions with new people?
You have a friend, and she just happens to be really gorgeous, great personality, charisma.
Now, as a guy, you are outgoing, have charisma, you are talkative, all that. But do you ever find that other guys will approach and be concentrating more on the girl? And even if you are consciously including yourself in the conversation, does it ever feel pointless since the guy talking to this hot girl pretty much has blinders on?
2 AnswersFriends1 decade agoCan I use hydroponics to keep my turtle tank clean?
I have 2 red eared sliders and their water gets messy quickly. I have a 505 Filter that does a decent job usually, but eventually it needs cleaning and parts replaced.
I was wondering if I could use the messy turtle water to feed plants through a hydroponic system, and in return, keep the water a little cleaner. I would go for the design where water is pumped down a tray or tube with the roots hanging in the constant stream. This way, I would just have to feed water from the filter directly to the plants, and then have the water go from the plants back into the tank.
It sounds like a simple setup, I just wonder if turtle poop and food pellet remains would make good plant food.

I'm BBQ-ing for 50 people. They would like to eat 3 main things.
Shish Kebab
Chicken
Hot Dogs
1. What type of meat would be good to use for Kebabs?
2. How much of each do you think would create a plentiful mix of Chicken and Kebobs, and a steady supply of hot dogs to throw on the grill throughout the night?
