  • Why do people tip so much?

I always considered 10% to be more than fair for average service at restaurants. It's also incredibly easy to compute the tip in my head using 10%.

When a waiter is exceptionally good I'll pony up 15%. Which is utterly ridiculous when you consider how little the waiters do compared to others in the restaurant industry.

After spending alittle time online it appears I'm cheap and that everyone on the web tips a minimum of 15% regardless of how bad the service was and up to 25% for good service.

Apparently I missed the law requiring all waitstaff to have a phd.

Just looking at the math and its ridiculous.

A party of 4 at any steak house will spend 60-100 easily.

    Each waiter is responsible for 4 tables. 4 x 80= 320 x 10%= 32 duckies a hr plus a additional 2.25 minimum wage base salary.

$35 per hr for basic service labor that required no education and very basic skills.

That's assuming average bill, cheap tipping, and each table only turning over once per hr.

    all very conservative figures.

I don't resent anyone making good money. More power to them! It just takes away the point of tipping if the wait staff has a sense of entitlement to much higher margins than the owner, the cooks, etc...

  • Side stepping Obamacare?

I'm pretty concerned about the cost of complying with Obamacare. My wife and I are both 25, no kids, and earn well over 400% of the poverty level. We both own and operate small business's and do very well for our age. That said we are starting out in life and business, so basically everything we make is reinvested.

Right now we have basic catastrophic coverage which cost approx $1,200 annually(10K deductible). I feel that is a acceptable amount to pay for two young people. No alcohol, no tobacco, and no history of illness of any kind. We take care of our bodies and have never had any significant medical bills.. Same for my parents who are now in their mid 50's.. Nothing more than the standard $65 doctor bill and a round of antibiotics.

Now I'm hearing that Obamacare is going to force insurers to offer more benefits that we don't need and will likely cost 5-10K annually for the two of us.. That's incredibly stupid IMO... We literally spend approx $500 annually on checkups and medication. That will likely not increase unless we have some unforseen catastrophe..

Here's my question... Currently my business is set up as a LLC and all the funds come back to me personally for tax purposes.

Would it be possible to restructure my business as a S-Corp and have the S-corp pay me a salary of say 30-40K annually? The rest of the funds would stay in the business and would be allowed to grow the business.

I've heard this is a pretty common practice to avoid paying self employment taxes already?

My thinking is that we really only need about 30K a year to live on. Coincidentally that would put us down in the poverty level to qualify for subsidized healthcare. Hoooray free healthcare!

  • What's causing loose steering?

Just purchased a used honda crv. 2000 model with 100,000 miles.

Car runs and drives great with the exception of some slack in the steering.

The car drives fine and tracks perfectly straight going down the highway but the steering wheel just has about 2-3" of slack in the steering. Around town it's of no concern but on the interstate it's kinda unnerving being able to turn the wheel with nothing happening.

It does the same thing whether its moving or sitting still.

Just seeing if ya community can help diagnose the problem. Thanks!

  • How are stocks so liquid?

How is it that stocks Can be so liquid when it is apparent that they are overvalued and headed for a correction?

Example: when apple ran up to $700 per share just recently it was kinda obvious that it wouldn't keep climbing for eternity. How is it that there is always enough demand for a Asset being sold at market value.

It just seems that people would shy away from some stocks making them hard to sell at times.

  • Toyota Pickup Reliability?

    Is this plan totally crazy?

My wife and I have been wanting to make a road trip through California for a couple years now.

Ive also been wanting purchase a beater pickup to poke around town with...

Wife and I have 1 way tickets booked.

My plan is to purchase a 1988 Toyota pickup outside of San Fran... Truck is a 4x4, v6, 5sp with 200K miles... Photos look mint inside and out for the age and mileage... Seller said it recently had the timing belt replaced and full service...

I'm hoping to purchase the truck for about 3,000+/-.

Spend a week driving around Cali Coast along hwy 1 and then Head back East to Mississippi...

All told I'm looking at about 2,500 miles of road tripping in a truck that 1 year younger than myself...

I'm paying cash and am not really worried about the money.. My biggest concern is just breaking down out in the Desert on I-10 coming back east..... The Hills have eyes movie ruined that part of the country for me....

Other than the obvious concern of whether the truck will make it, I'm totally psyched about the trip... ..

I would greatly appreciate any input on what I should be looking for prior to purchasing the vehicle...

Any route recommendations would be appreciated also... My goal is to avoid the Rockies as much as possible, while also trying to avoid the no mans land desert.

  • Extending wi fi signal?

I own a small office building that is approx 8,500 sq ft.

It is a L shaped brick building.

I have a personal office that is in the middle of the building.

I would like to be able to broadcast my wireless connection to everyone in the building for guest wifi access.

My current linksys N router only covers about 1/2 the building.

What is the the most cost effective way to extend the signal to a larger area?

  • Should healthcare be like public schools. ?

Again let me add my disclaimer.

I am a conservative. I'm just a bit torn on the issue of healthcare.

I just don't see how it is the tax payers responsibility to provide education to every child in America yet not provide basic healthcare for the masses.

I'm a firm believer in free market capitalisim, but I honestly am not sure it can work in healthcare industry. I read a article today addressing the issue that outlined much of what ive been thinking.

Healthcare is not optional in many cases.

It's almost impossible to tell the doc to hold up before performing open heart surgery while I call around and get quotes on the procedure.

I know if the federal government was involved with health care it would be much like the schools. The quality would be inferior. But just like the education system there would be private institutions who offer a refined experience and the more cutting edge procedures for those willing to pay for such services.

Before blasting me with the "liberal in disguise" comments, please check my post.

I'm just sitting in my deer stand bored as hell pondering why I was given free education when my parents could easily have afforded it. At the same time there are millions of Americans losing everything they own due to unexpected illness.

I'm not saying I'm 100% in favor of social medicine. I'm not even 100% in favor of public education. It just seems this hybrid socialist system we currently live in is failing to provide either cost savings or quality.

I'm wanting to have a 30' x 30' shop built on some unusued space behind my office.. It would be for business use to store atv's, trailers, signs, and other tools that are used for my real estate business.

I intend to pay cash for it.

  • Fox news"fair &balanced"?

I'm just curious why fox news sticks with the old fair and balanced slogan when they are apparently one of the most partisan networks on television.

I'm a conservative who doesn't like to be played a fool.

What would be some more fitting slogans.

  • Block the Morning After Pill... Really Obama?

I can't believe the Obama Admin blocked the Morning After pill from being available off the shelf...

I guess he would rather girls under 17 to just have abortions...

This is a legitimate way to avoid unwanted pregnancy without aborting a fertilized egg.

It seems Obama is only pro choice when their is a political gain to be had from fem-a-nazis....

The only time Obama tends to be Moderate or Conservative is when it comes to restricting personal choice and increasing government control.

Same with cracking down on state legalized Marijuana providers...

WTF is going on with this administration...

Remind me again why Ron Paul is crazy??

  • Is ows anti Semitic??. ?

Their calls against "greedy bankers". Sounds very similar to hitlers call for justice in pre ww2 Germany.

Just wondering if anyone noticed the similarities between the political rhetoric between hitler and Obama who originally began the "economic justice" campaign to pressure conservatives to raise taxes for his destined to fail jobs plan.

  • Why are liberals so intimidated by the tea party? ?

Is there anything that bad about a smaller government?

Are they really that scared of losing entitlements and actually having to work and pay these ridiculous taxes like the rest of us?

Why do they demonize wealthy people?

Do they not comprehend the basics of capitalism?

Do they really believe socialism will work in America after history has proved time and again that once the masses realize they can vote for more handouts the system goes bankrupt and ends in tyranny??

Is 14 trillion in debt not enough?

Has Obama fixed anything? Last I checked healthcare cost rose by 9%.

I just don't understand why liberals spend so much time attacking others instead of stating what they actually want?? I'm guessing they wouldnt be taken very seriously if they voiced their desires.

And I'm not talking about empty hope and change speeches.
