  • What is the difference between the meanings of 'Jigoku' and 'Yomi'?

From my understanding, Jigoku means 'Hell' and Yomi means 'shadowy land of the dead'. So is there a difference (for example, different spirits that reside in each domain, what is found there, how souls get there)? Any interpretation would be helpful!

  • "Having an Eating disorder is a lifestyle"?

Some effected individuals believe this. I have not heard of any mentally healthy individuals believe this. Thoughts?

  • First Nobel Truth and Depression?

I read that the first Nobel Truth is "suffering exists" but some people interpret it as "life means suffering" (of course, this is just my general understanding as Buddhism-ignorant person).

I know that as studying to hopefully help people with clinical depression and other mental disorders, there will be some people out there that are both Buddhist and depressed. How can I help them through their suffering when their first noble truth focuses on suffering? (I know that it means that people don't need to suffer, but depressed people might skew this as such.)

I was thinking that maybe I could suggest 'suffering' is more just an experience that comes with life, but isn't doesn't mean that because you live someone absolutely must suffer. Would this be a good idea? The other Truths seem like they can help. From what I know, Buddhism is known to help with negative thinking by admitting or coming to terms with these Truths. I don't have time to get a full understanding of this, but if I'm misunderstanding in something (which I bet I am), could any Buddhists out there point me in the right direction (or which essay to read) on how to help them with depression?

I mean the delusional, psychically taxing, clinical depression. Sorry if this is long, your answers to one or all, or just your 'two cents' are appreciated!

(I decided to put this in the Spirituality section. Please, no intolerant answers.)

  • Fate, physics, and the universe?

So, for extra credit, we have to write a reaction to this:

"Imagine a rabbit is outside of our universe observing everything.

If this rabbit knew all the laws that govern the universe, it could plot everything on a graph and know exactly how everything is affected and effecting by every other thing in the universe. The rabbit wrote down everything (or the singular thing) that existed. From a second after t=0, it decided to actually chart everything down. This observer decides to track one simple particle it decides to call a carrot.

On its graph, the carrot moves from point A to B. Because the rabbit knows everything, it understands exactly what interactions caused the carrot to move from A to B. Because the rabbit knows the true formulas that describe the universe and knows all the circumstances of everything that affects and is effected by the carrot, the rabbit is able to accurately predict a course for the carrot in the future.

It believes that all the interactions and reactions of the carrot gave no room to wiggle in its path—that is, it could not change its course because it was already affected by the previous instant. The rabbit believes that by knowing everything-about-everything in one instant, it will be able to know everything-about-everything the next without the need to observe the subsequent instant."

So, um…I’m a bit lost. Am I supposed to disagree or agree with this? I'm getting that the rabbit is saying that everything can be charted like an equation on a graph (if you knew the equation)...and something about there being no room for choice because everything's interaction had a set course from from the start, like if a atom having no choice but to move a certain way because, I dunno, gravity?

Explanations would help. (And sorry for any grammar/spelling mistakes.)

  • ACT Advice Needed!?

    I'm what you'd call a straight A student; AP/IP classes and everything.

But when I take the ACT I always doo terribly! I've taken one official one and some practice ones, but the scores I get give me suprised looks from people.

On every single section I have to rush the last three to six questions or so, and I tend to re-read the questions and passages over many times. I'm serious, my brain just freezes.

    :(

Anyone have tips to at least help me relax when taking the test?

Or... how about any schools that don't require a score?

  • Who coined the term "spagettification?"?

I know what it is, and a buch of sites /and/ books describe it, but none of them have cited the person/organization who first used it.

Here's the most common definition: When approaching the horizon of a black hole, the gravity would have a greater effect on the body parts closest to the black hole. You would essentially be spagettified, that is, elongated.

[Also, if this isn't the correct understanding, let me know!]

  • Yet another emulator question...?

So! I have VisualBoyAdcance. And I want to add cheats.

To add cheats, I go to cheats, then the cheat list. I either click on 'code,' 'gameshark, or 'codebreaker.' For Gameshark and Codebreaker, I have found each respective set of codes.

But when I try to add them, here's what I get:

    Code: invalid cheat code

Gameshark: [doesn't work, or with a code of more than two lines, it say that the code is for a different game]

Codebreaker: not the right, supported format.

Can someone explain to me why this happens? Am I doing something wrong?
