How can explaining something or not explaining something both be considered condescending?
Explaining something is considered to be insulting people's intelligence and therefore condescending. So then, if, out of respect for people's intelligence, one assumes that they already know things, it's also considered condescending to state that something is obvious. How can this contradiction be explained?
4 AnswersEtiquette1 month agoWhy do so many Catholics disregard the teachings off the Pope?
When he calls for all Catholics to join the fight for social and environmental justice? Shouldn't that mean that anyone who calls themselves a Catholic; but is opposed to social and environmental justice is being a bad Catholic?
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality3 months agoWho do so many Christians harshly criticize the working poor?
...even though Jesus praised the working poor and reached out to them; while criticizing the rich.
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality3 months agoWhy are Christian Republicans so obsessed with keeping taxes low?
...even though Jesus told them to rend unto Caesar what is Caesar's? Jesus couldn't have been more explicitly clear that his followers should not resist taxation, should not lay up for themselves treasures upon the Earth, that Mammon is the Devil's domain and you cannot serve two masters and that it's easier to get an camel through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven.
1 AnswerPolitics3 months agoHow do some people not realize the contradiction of using both US flag and Rebel flag imagery?
Seriously, it's like they're unaware that the USA and the CSA fought a war against each other. The rebel flag represents the enemies of the USA. It is a symbol of treason against the USA. How can some people possibly not see the cognitive dissonance of using rebel flag imagery; while also claiming to be good American patriots who defend the US constitution and the US troops and love the Star Spangled Banner etc. The US troops that they claim to love fought against the defenders of the flag that they love.
3 AnswersPolitics3 months agoWhy do Republicans call an establishment, corporate centrist like Joe Biden a leftist?
Seriously, he's explicitly stated many times that he's opposed to Medicare For All and the Green New Deal and at this point, it looks like he's going to appoint zero progressives to his cabinet. Are people who call him a leftist really that stupid?
3 AnswersPolitics4 months agoWhy did Republicans accept being called red by a TV network?
I'm aware of how the red and blue terms came into use; because of a political map on TV. That doesn't mean that either party had to choose to accept the colors bestowed upon them and use them to self-identify. For most of the 20th Century, Republicans screamed bloody murder about reds. Why then did they not object to be called red themselves? Communists didn't become any less red when Republicans started calling themselves red. I don't understand for the life of me why they accepted being called red.
1 AnswerPolitics4 months agoWhy do people always say "it doesn't hurt to ask?"?
...as though there's zero possibility of getting on someone's nerves? Seriously, no one wants to feel like they're on trial. Asking should be a last resort; not a first resort. How can people not realize that asking questions is a rude interruption of someone else's introspection? How can people think that their fellow human beings are a question answering service? I often feel like responding with "how would you like it if someone asked you a question?"; but they're probably so masochistic that they'd like that. Another good comeback is "I can answer that question for a nominal fee". What gets to me the most is when people ask a question with an obvious answer and/or a question that they can figure out the answer to with their five senses. Seriously, when will people evolve to the point where we learn to have the human decency to leave each other alone?
7 AnswersYahoo Answers4 months agoIs it culturally insensitive to say "YOLO"?
Yes, this question is tongue in cheek; but that doesn't change the fact that it's an inherently Western/Abrahamic thing to say. Really, billions of our fellow Human beings don't believe that it's true. Would it be insensitive to say "YOLO" to a Hindu or Buddhist, or any other believer in reincarnation?
1 AnswerReligion & Spirituality4 months agoWhy do politicians subscribe to the untrue stereotype that everyone has a family?
Politicians constantly use the rhetoric "we're just trying to help people who are struggling to raise their families"; as though everyone has a family. What about the rest of us? Are we just chopped liver? Apparently, people who choose the lifestyle of living alone aren't real people and get no representation. I'm personally a Gen Xer; but statistics show that a lot of Millennials are choosing to not have families. As Millennials age, they will become an increasingly more important voting block and politicians would be very foolish indeed to continue pretending that they can continue to get re-elected by only focusing on family rhetoric and ignoring an increasing percentage of voters.
7 AnswersPolitics4 months agoWhy did such a high percentage of people who listened to gangsta rap, as teens, in the late '90s turn out to be Republicans, as adults?
Seriously, literally 100% of the people that I knew who listened to gansta rap back then are gung-ho, Trump supporting Republicans; when I see them on Facebook now. I've noticed this trend, on a mass scale, nationwide. It can't be just a coincidence. I know that gangsta rap was largely about guns and money; but there has to be something more to it than that; to explain this phenomenon.
4 AnswersPolitics12 months agoWhy do Fox News addicts claim people that they disagree with support authoritarianism; instead of realizing that Fox News is authoritarian?
The irony is rich. They treat Fox News like a god that it's a sin to question. They allow what Fox News tells them to rule their very existence. They blindly believe every piece of propaganda that their masters tell them to believe and act as their masters tell them to act and then they call themselves anti-authoritarian freedom lovers.
6 AnswersPolitics12 months agoWhy do some Christians seem to think that it's un-Christian to be anti-Capitalist?
Some of them really take strong moral offense to anti-Capitalism and they think that an anti-Capitalist can't possibly also be a good Christian. They're never able to support this belief with scripture; because Jesus never said anything of the kind. Of course, I understand that they're Christians who also happen to be Capitalists; but they don't understand that those are two separate things and indeed there's a lot in the gospels that could be considered anti-Capitalist; but they refuse to acknowledge that.
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 year agoHow do we reduce tension with my girlfriend's daughters after they overheard us having kinky sex and/or talking about it?
The 41 year old daughter once sent us a text saying "lock your door"; after the front door was locked and she came in the back door after midnight to return a bank card and apparently overheard us having hard, loud anal sex. The 39 year old daughter once came in unannounced to return something and overheard us talking about golden showers in another room. Now we've overheard them calling us sick freaks and saying they are grossed out by it and the 39 year old has criticized my girlfriend to her face for having large, heavier gauge nipple rings that are visible through clothes.
8 AnswersOther - Family & Relationships1 year agoIs it odd that my girlfriend's daughter is creeped out by my girlfriend getting her nipples pierced; even though she has her own pierced?
My girlfriend is 57 and the daughter is 39. It is possibly because the daughter has barbells that aren't really noticeable through clothes; unless you are really looking for them; but my girlfriend got somewhat large rings that are of a heavier gauge and are fairly noticeable through clothes. I think maybe she's just against her mom getting them done at her age, though. The daughter has had hers done for decades; but my girlfriend just recently got hers done.
3 AnswersFashion & Accessories1 year agoIsn't weizenbock an oxymoron?
Weizens are by definition ales and bocks are by definition lagers. Do they take a weizen ale and lager it or is it actually cold fermented with bottom yeast and thus not an ale? If it's just a strong ale, then it's not a bock.
2 AnswersBeer, Wine & Spirits1 year agoWhy are bock beers so out of style?
I'm referring both to what millennials prefer and to what microbrewers brew; which are largely related. Most microbrewers brew a lot more ales than lagers, in general. In addition to market demand, this is possibly also related to the cost and space consumption of the lagering process. It is perhaps then related that most microbrewers also brew a lot more British Isles styles than German styles; because basically all British Isles styles are ales and most German styles are lagers. Most microbrewers at least make an Oktoberfest and one or two other lagers; like a Dunkel or a Schwarz. A lot of the microbrewers that make two to four different IPAs don't offer a single bock. Bocks being higher in alcohol isn't why; because IPAs are high, too. I also don't believe that it's because of calories; since I believe that a lot of stouts and porters are of similar calorie content. The relative popularity of stouts and porters also means that dark beer isn't out of style in general. I don't understand why, even in a place with a lot of German heritage and beer tradition, like Wisconsin, that the market demand for bock is so low. Could it be as simple as the seemingly cyclic argument that everybody drinks IPAs to be seen drinking them; because everybody else drinks them and nobody drinks bocks; because they don't want to be seen drinking them; because nobody else drinks them?
2 AnswersBeer, Wine & Spirits1 year agoHow do I deal with a father who forces things upon me that I have told him that I don't want?
When he asks what I want for Christmas or my birthday, then he criticizes my answer and suggests something that he thinks I should have. When I politely; but firmly decline his suggestion with sound reasoning, then he buys it for me anyways. When he offers to take me out to eat for my birthday and asks me where I'd like to go, then he says that he doesn't want to go there and takes me to a place that he likes that he knows I don't like. The latest incident is that he knows that I can't stand bright lights; so he replaced all of the lights in my living area with extra bright lights and then demanded that I thank him.
4 AnswersFamily1 year agoHow should I introduce my parents to my older ladyfriend?
I'm 39 and I've been dating a 56 year old woman. My parents are against pre-marital sex and drugs. I've been having sex with this woman and she smokes pot daily.
3 AnswersSingles & Dating3 years agoWhy do Christian schools teach The Pledge of Allegiance?
In The Sermon On The Mount, Jesus explicitly commands his followers to not swear oaths; why then do Christian schools violate this command by teaching children the idolatrous practice of swearing allegiance to a worldly institution?
