  • Help with injured kitten?

I was walking home from school today, and I found a small kitten on the sidewalk, limping in front of my house. I walked up to him in curiosity and he fell over, and I noticed his leg was torn open and bleeding. I took him inside with a towel and scheduled an appointment with my nearest vet. It's in three days, but how can I care for him before his vet appointment? He seems to be taking food if you feed him, but isn't drinking any water. Whenever I move around in the house, he wants to follow me, and runs/limps after me in pain.

How can I comfort him and somehow lessen his pain? I will be checking for any microchip at the vet.

  • Can you train male pet rats?

I heard that typically, female rats are more playful, and males are more calm. Will their calmness be a factor in whether they will be trained easily or not? So sorry if this is somewhat of a dumb question or not, but I didn't know how to word it and I wanted to know. Thanks! :)

  • Male or female corn snake?

I'm getting a corn snake soon, but I'm only keeping one. I may start breeding when I'm more experienced. Is it true that females are bigger than males? If so, how much different? What are the common lengths for each gender?

  • How can I tell the gender of my two budgies?

My other budgies were from a breeder, so they were sexed before I got them around eight months old. However, I just recently had to rescue two budgies from an owner who didn't want them and were going to let them go. She bought them from Petco for her kids, but they lost interest.

Petco told her that one of them was a girl and one of them was a boy, but she didn't know which one was which.

I thought I could tell what gender my budgies were but one of the budgie's cere changed color from white to light, tan brown.

Budgie #1 - light, tan brown cere

    Budgie #2 - pink cere

The previous owner has owned Budgie #2 for almost a year before getting Budgie #1. I know that Budgie #2 is over a year old, not so sure about Budgie #1. (Sorry, that was a bit confusing.)

Can you please sex my budgies? Thank you!

  • Why does this dog nip when he gets excited?

At the rescue shelter I currently volunteer at, there is this shih tzu puppy, a little under a year old. Whenever people visit and take a look at him, he'll get very excited and start to nip. He's only drawn blood once. He'll chew on people's fingers sometimes as play, but he'll also nip in play. Nobody that visits the shelter want to adopt him because of this. His former foster family used to hit him in order for him to stop nipping at hands and heels, but none of us want to try that. Since I'm only a volunteer, I don't get to join the training classes and I am currently fostering him. I'm also currently fostering a six-year-old cat, whom he's very protective of. He'll try to get her to play sometimes.

I've trained many dogs to stop nipping by spraying water at them. However, when my sister or anyone else tries, he only jumps and encourages you to do it again. He will occasionally nip other dogs, which led to one dog bleeding. How can we get him to stop?

  • Are Purina's canned Friskies good for cats?

I am currently fostering a six-year-old cat. When she was still a stray cat, a few people were feeding her. They told the rescue that they were feeding her canned Friskies since it was cheap and easy to get. I've heard mixed results about Friskies, but no matter what I do, she refuses to eat anything else. I tried offering a raw diet, but she refuses to eat it. I tried mixing in high quality food with Friskies and increasing the high quality food amount, but she'll pick tiny bits of food and leave it there. She's been eating Friskies for about four years already, should I just continue to feed her that?

  • Ball Python vs Corn Snake?

I'm considering a getting a pet snake, but I can't choose between the two. I've visited different reptile shows and expos, and looked online at reputable online stores, so price of the actual snake doesn't matter to me.

    a) is more tolerating to handling than the other

    b) is not a fussy eater (will eat pre-killed mice, not live)

    c) is less expensive (not the snake itself, but the setup and equipment for it. keep in mind that I have more than enough money.. I'm just looking to see which one is less expensive)

Size does not matter to me, I am fine with the sizes of both snakes.

Are males or females bigger, for each type of snake?

I know corn snakes are good escape artists, based on what most breeders, forums, and stores have told me. However, I will check the setup to make sure that he/she has no way of escaping.

    Thank you guys!

  • Are pitbull terriers good with kids?

I know that any dog can be good with kids if they're properly raised, trained, and socialized. However, a family at the shelter (it's where I volunteer at weekly) said that they want to give up their pitbull terrier. I asked why, and they replied, "When we first came to look for a dog, workers said she was so sweet and good with children. She was for a couple of weeks, then she started attacking the kids without any warning! We can't have this danger in the house!" Which, is a bit odd to me, since the pitbull terrier they adopted was very well behaved and socialized with children, cats, and other dogs when she was very young. The family told me that the children were gentle with the dog, but I'm not too convinced.. (they were three children, two twins age 10, and one older daughter 14).

  • Should I get a cat or two, maybe more, rats?

It's either an older cat or two, maybe more, rats.

    a) is less expensive monthly

    b) is more affectionate with children and adults

    c) lives longer

    d) in your opinion is easier to care for

    e) needs less vet visits (not counting emergency, but generally checkups and shots)

BQ: Do you have any of these pets, if so, what is your experience with them?

  • Kittens vs Older Cats?

I've done a lot of research on cat care, and saved up a lot of money. It's enough to pay for the adoption fee, since I'm going to go to a shelter, and enough for about five or six vet visits.

But I'm not sure what age cat is best for me. I'm currently still in school, from 8:00 to 2:30 in the afternoon. After I come home from school, I will spend the rest of the day with the cat. I'm not that active, but then again I'm not lazy at all either.

In the beginning I really wanted a kitten so I can get proud of being the person who raised him/her and be the person who he/she spends the rest of his/her life with.

But then I visited about three different shelters and a few adoption events at Petco, and I've seen how many older cats need home. They're two years and up. I see a lot of people looking around for younger kittens and often bringing home a kitten over an older cat..

What are the pros and cons of both ages?

  • Can I use a glass tank with a tank topper for my rats?

  • Guinea Pigs vs Rats?

I'm not so sure what small pet to get, I've narrowed it down to these.

    a) cost less (not the actual animals, the supplies), and can you please list the estimated costs?

    b) lives longer

    c) likes to be cuddled and handled with for over an hour

    d) likes children

    e) doesn't have to be trainable (but I would train them if I wanted to)
