  • Once filed charges have been dropped, can they be pressed again?

My brother in law filed charges against my sister for forging checks on his account while they were separated.

    He later dropped those charges.

Now, he's saying that if she tries to come around to see the kids, he'll press charges about the checks after all.

Legally, can he file charges again on the same incident?

What's the statute of limitations on something like this?

She can't afford a lawyer. She can barely afford to keep a roof over her head.

  • Is there a way to make my SQL statement determine whether an entry already exists and, if not, creates it?

I'm going through about 40,000 files, reading information out of them and putting them in a database. Some of the information is redundant (i.e. appears in multiple files), and, when my program encounters information that's already been inserted in the database, I need it to skip it rather than inserting a duplicate entry.

Is there a way to write a single SQL statement to detect whether the entry already exists, create one if it does not, and skip it if it does? As it is now, I have to do a SELECT to see if it exists, and then do my create (if it doesn't already exist) in another statement. I'd like to consolidate it into a single statement to reduce processing time, but I'm not sure if that's possible.

  • I loaned a digital camera to my friend and now she won't return it. Do I have any recourse?

I loaned my "best" friend my $200 digital camera. Shortly thereafter, she got angry and decided that she didn't want anything to do with me-- which is fine, as far as I'm concerned, except that she now refuses to return the camera.

I called her about it every two or three days for a while and she told me she was "looking for it," and would return it when she found it.

I strongly believe that's a lie. I believe she knows exactly where the camera is and has either destroyed it to spite me, or has decided to keep it for herself.

During our last call, she told me she can't find it and told me to stop calling or she's going to report me to the police for harassment.

Do I have any legal recourse other than suing her (which I don't have the money to do)?

  • Is there any sort of transportation assistance in Missouri for people that have lost their drivers license?

My brother in law is in a tough situation. Several years ago, his drivers license was suspended because of too many DUI's. He's since cleaned up his act, and is set to get his license back in a few months, but, in the meantime, my sister left him and left their two small boys with him.

My brother-in-law has always relied on my sister for transportation and, now that she's gone, he has a serious problem. Were there an emergency with the kids, he has no vehicle to get them help. He has no way to get the kids to a babysitter, and no way to get to work. He'll lose his job-- and, eventually, his house-- if he can't get back and forth to work. Not to mention trying to get to the store to buy groceries!

They live out in the country, so public transportation isn't an option for him.

Does anyone know of any public assistance programs or resources that he could check into for help? He lives in a small town called Granby, Missouri...

  • Is forging your spouse's signature on a check illegal?

I know someone who lives in Missouri that has been accused of signing her husband's name to his checks and using them at stores around town (small amounts-- a couple of dollars here, ten dollars there, etc). The checks overdrew his account, and, when they separated shortly after she allegedly wrote the checks, he turned the forged checks over to the police.

I realize that signing someone else's name to a check is illegal, but does it make any difference if the check belongs to your spouse? What kind of penalties could she face if convicted? Since he turned the checks over to the police, is there now a warrant out for her arrest? How could she find out?

  • Where can I find someone to hire to build a simple electronic circuit?

I live in Bedford, Texas. I have a design for a simple electronic device that I need to hire someone to construct (it was my dad's invention; he was into electronics before he passed away-- transistors, capacitors, diodes, etc.). Where could I find someone to hire to build one?

  • In a community-property state, is there any advantage to a married couple filing separately?

I live in Texas (a community property state) and am married. It's time for my husband and I to file our taxes, but I'm wondering if we should file separately or jointly. I worked a standard job last year and paid in taxes. He worked contract jobs, did not pay taxes, and will owe a substantial amount of money-- I'd guess between $2000 and $3000 dollars. My husband and I are newly married and have always kept our money separate-- what he earns is his, what I earn is mine, and we split the bills. I know this strikes some people as strange, but it works for us. Would filing separately reduce my liability for his debt to the goverment? i.e., would filing separately protect me from having my wages garnished in the event that my husband becomes delinquent in his payments to the feds? If not, is there ANY benefit whatsoever to filing separately in a community property state? If you file separately here, you still have to put your spouse's income information on your filing form.

  • Working with ASCII values in C++?

I'm trying to put interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes on a .pdf report that I'm generating, but am running into trouble. The barcode font expects me to give it ASCII values rather than CString values. Specifically, the ASCII value has to be the CString value plus 33: i.e. to represent the number 1, I have to give the font the ASCII value 34, to represent the number 10, I have to give the font the ASCII value 43, and so on.

I'm so confused. I have to take a CString, turn it into an ASCII value, add 33 to that ASCII value, and then print this new ASCII value in a particular barcode font. On top of that, the virtual print engine I'm using to generate the .pdf report (Ideal Software) expects the value that I print to be a LPCSTR.

Can anyone give me any tips on working with ASCII characters and converting them to and from the various formats that I need?

  • Getting a "List Index Out Of Bounds (9)" error when I try to remove a file from a project...?

I'm using Borland CodeGear C++ Builder 2007. I've created a fairly complicated project that includes such features as database access, as well as the heavy use of classes and libraries.

I apparently have some sort of a library synching issue because, when the statements:

    double xx = 0.0;

    xx = Pln.Nrd.retireAge;

are executed, xx is 65 and Pln.Nrd.retireAge is 0. I don't understand how this is possible-- it's a direct assignment, after all!-- unless it's a problem with the library I'm using.

In a separate (related?) issue, I have some files included in the project: report.cpp, plan.cpp, and getp.cpp. When I try to remove them, however, a dialog box immediately pops up saying, respectively:

List index out of bounds (8),

List index out of bounds (9),

and List index out of bounds (7)

I also can't "Save All", because the list index out of bounds error pops up and prevents these files from saving.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • What's the difference between a "Resale license" and a State Tax ID number?

I live in Texas and am launching an official eBay business and am trying to get my head around all of the licenses, permits, and ID numbers I have to have.

I've applied for and EIN from www.irs.gov and a Sales Tax ID number with my state. I have the EIN and am waiting to receive the sales tax ID number.

My question is, is my state tax ID number what they refer to as a "resale license"? If not, where do I get a resale license in Texas? Do I need a business permit to operate? I don't have a storefront; I just list auctions from my apartment and will store my inventory in a spare closet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I convert an integer to a DateTime in C#?

I am pulling dates out of an (ancient) Betrieve database. The dates are stored in integer format (the number of days since December 31, 1899 or January 1, 1900, I believe) so recent dates are represented as integers between 38000 and 39000 or so.

As I loop through the program, I want to print these dates to an Excel file in a format that I can read (i.e. Gregorian dates). I've been unable to find a good way of converting these integer dates to Gregorian dates.

In case it would be helpful, I should mention that the date is initially retrieved as an object, and is converted to a date. If it would be easier to somehow convert the object to a DateTime, I could do that (but C# won't let me do a direct conversion).

    In C++, I would retrieve it as a COleDateTime and format it into an acceptable format: myDate = tempDate.Format( "%m/%d/%Y" );

I just don't know how to do it in C#.

    Help!

  • In Visual Studio 2005, is there any such thing as array bounds checking?

I keep stepping on my variables in Visual Studio 2005 (C++) because I'm exceeding my array bounds. Visual Studio doesn't have a problem with this; it just overwrites whatever was in the previous variable and continues. It can lead to strange results in my program, and it takes forever to track down such problems.

Is there a switch a I can flip somewhere in the Visual Studio 2005 IDE to warn me if I'm exceeding my array bounds?

I keep accidentally stepping on things by exceeding my array bounds in Visual Studio 2005 (C++). Is there a switch I can flip somewhere in the environment so that the IDE will throw up a flag if I try to exceed my array bounds?

  • In Visual Studio 2005, how can I run until a variable changes?

I have a loop in my program. At the beginning of the loop, a certain variable consists of letters. At the end of the loop, the loop consists of digits. Inside the loop, I never intentionally change the variable-- I believe it's getting "stepped" on. I process this loop more than a thousand times when I run the program, so it would not be economical for me to trace the program through to the iteration in which the variable is getting changed (and I don't know which iteration it is, anyway). I'd like to put a "watch" on the variable (which I've already done, actually) and then run the program until the variable changes so I can see where it's accidentally getting stepped on.

How do you do this in Visual Studio 2005? It's a C++ program, if that makes any difference at all.

  • My car makes grinding noises when I'm backing up?

I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse with 105,000 miles on it. For the past year or so, it has occasionally made these odd grinding sounds from the rear when I start the car and put it in reverse, and continues to make the grinding noise until I've stopped moving backward and put the car in "drive". The car jerks a bit when it does this, as if it's idling too low and is trying to die, but it *never* does this when I'm in drive, or when I'm in reverse but have have been in the car for a while: it's only when I first start the car and am backing up.

I'm certain that it's not the brakes, because then it seems that the grinding noise would come from the front (it's a front wheel drive car) rather than the rear, and eroded brake pads wouldn't make the car shudder.

I'm concerned that it might be some crazy transmission problem. Any ideas??

  • If I have a domain name registerd, how can I receceive email at myname@mydomain.com?

If I've registered a domain name, can I set something up so that I can receive mail at myname@mydomain.com? How does it work? Can I have it routed to my Yahoo! email address? Everyone sells packages that include an email account but I'm not eager to pay the $10 a month it will cost to subscribe to those kinds of packages. I just want the domain name, and the ability to send and receive email through my domain.
