  • Hub drum brakes for cargo bike?

Wheel mounting plates are 4 1/4 inches apart and there are 1/4 inch of spacers in order for current hubs to fit. (Wheel wells are 3 3/4)

Wondering if hub drum brakes such as sturmey archer would be in the same situation and if they carry enough weight.

I heard motorcycle wheels "ruedas laterales de tipo moto 300x18) would fit similar bikes and I wonder what the braking options are for these? Drum brakes or welding disc calipers.

I think it would be more stable if the hubs actually FIT the wheel mounting plates. Although maybe there is nothing that fits.

  • Outdoor container for my cargo bike.?

The shipping containers people build houses out of, are too large or pricy.

"Bike boxes" will only store a normal size bike.

There are tarp frames (framed tarp) for covering motorcycles but they're not secure although I might lock it inside I'm looking for something better.

Also it would have to go in a small space.

The bike itself is 7ft by 40 inches (four or five ft tall inside should accommodate the seat post since I'm a tall rider...ok the seat post is like 3-1/2ft but I'm installing slightly higher handlebars by a couple inches) and it shouldn't be much wider or longer than that as it has to fit with other items on the patio unless I destroy more grass.

I would hate just tying down a tarp and of course anyone could drag it off even if the wheels were locked, and untie the tarp every time you want to use it.

I have been to hardware stores and looked at their sheds and that is not really what I want.

No can't just make room in the garage.

  • Why does GBA TV Converter now only show colored lines on the screen?

    UVGA GBA-TV Converter

to install this unit I had to remove the back of the case, clip on a long bracket to the circuit board and replace a rear panel which has an NES cartridge-type connector for the actual clip-on converter unit

it worked fine for a while but now it shows a bunch of colored lines on the tv screen

Opened it up and nothing seems to be wrong with the connection, tried blowing into the external connector since it looks so much like an NES cartridge, the converter unit seems to attach securely

not a big deal since I finally purchased an SP and I don't play much anyway

but would be nice if I could get it to work again

  • What would be the benefit of a shorter stem?

    I have a 115 on a 29er. (if I'm measuring correctly)

    referencing this article

"So from the Mondraker experiment I would say that at least for now 10 mm is too short. From my testing and the testing of our coaches and friends we believe the ideal is 35-50 mm and 60-70 mm is a compromise for riders with frames that are too short." - See more at: http://betterride.net/blog/2014/can-mountain-bike-...

I wanted to ge rid of some spacers but they told me if I did, i may be too stretched out without a shorter stem.

so I am not driving a boat

  • Is Mongoose coming out with another new Fatbike?

"Guy I ran into mentioned a new cheap ( around $300) mass market goose with discs and gears. THe one he was riding was SLX equipped, 100mm rims, 190 spaced back end, apparently priced around $1k, which ain't bad..."

So I asked him if it was any different than this, because this fits the description of "mass market goose with discs and gears"

    http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/29-Mongoose-Stat-Men-...

    So he clarified:

"Talking about 2 new fatbikes. New mass market model, under 250 and a new $1k fatty."

If I can get a fatbike with discs and gears for $300 I am all for it. If it is the same quality as my Columbia Trailhead (which has been reassigned to snowbike duty) it should last quite a long time.

  • Why does my computrainer not work?

    Computrainer Pro moedl 8001

I assembled all the things. Plugged in the cords. Well not the heart rate monitor because I don't have it.

Connected to computer and program seems to recognize the unit, I can change the display with the handlebar-mounted button, and I can even make the little character pedal.

But he doesn't move along the course.

And no data is produced other than speed and power.

So at least I can use it as a normal trainer.

But I really want the visuals associated with the computer program, and have it ACTUALLY produce on screen data.

  • What do I do about tires?

Rear Prowler 29er (2.1) tire is not dead yet but getting there...

Picked up a 29-1 Bontrager tire (2.2) and a Continental Race King (2.0) tire 60% off on Black Friday.

They said the race king (2.0) would be an okay rear tire. So I might run it when the rear tire wears out even though this decreases the rear tire diameter.

I don't think the 29-1 (2.2) would be a good front tire (Do you?) so I could place it on the rear but then I would like a larger diameter tire on the front.

    I think xc28 will fit a 2.35 correct?

Or I could just take them back and get some real tires. Or keep them since they were on special.

    4 AnswersCycling7 years ago
  • What diameter of tire will really fit?

The manual will not even say.

    The only thing is

"have found the Rock Shox XC 28 TK and the Rock Shox XC 30 TK. ... the only thin is that if i run a tire bigger than 2.35 up front it wont fit"

So I guess it would fit.

  • Can I lower the stem and then put the spacers on top?

An avid cyclist told me I could, a bike shop owner told me I couldn't and that I would have to cut the fork down.

    I don't know if it's right anyway.

But lowering it all the way on the 29er would put the bars in line with the seat. (which is supposed to be correct)

On my 26er I did the same thing although because I had to use a fork which was already cut or was short. That has worked out fine.

But the 29er is perhaps different geometry.

Go get a fit you say? On a sub-$1000 bike?

I walked in a bike shop and asked for a fit once. I guess they don't want money at that shop.

My road bike is grandpa-style with a lot of spacers as well. (because I got it from a Grandpa)

  • How do I set up my panniers?

Bontrager panniers I bought won't fit on the Sun rear rack because of a double bar the clips don't fit through, and the clip track is too low to correctly position.

Sun panniers I bought only have an over-hook and an elastic cord, so that they only stay on because of tension. But there is not enough tension for them to be attached in the rear. There is a loop and I could zip tie it I guess.

The both fit on the Old Man Mountain Sherpa Front rack.

Bontrager panniers are slightly larger I think.

No, I don't have a bar bag and there is not room for one with the current brake cable setup.

I want to carry at least

    - eureka solstice(?) 1 person tent which packs (and i assume larger on the return) rather large but only 2lbs

    -big ag air core mat

    -LaFuma sleeping bag

and just various other items (such as another sleeping bag liner since it's colder) and, camping things which fit in a casserole dish

i could additionally use a small backpack, and i am not even going that far

  • Should I get rear panniers or use my commuter bag?

I have a KHS urban which is not ideal for long distance touring but a guy called Bicycle Touring Pro advocates using your current bike. The racks are already installed Old Man Mountain front and a beefy-looking Suntour rear (the kind with rack-specific bag) and the commuter bag has the basic fold-down panniers. It would be good to use this bag except that I want to carry a tent and sleeping pad.

I have some small Suntour panniers should I just use those two panniers on the front and carry the tent, sleeping pad on top of the rack, or only those two panniers in the rear, or leave those on the front and get two more panniers for the rear. (there is a bontrager set for $119 but of course that is at American Cycling & Fitness)

Eureka Solitaire and the sleeping pad is actually larger. (They could both be returned with receipt for something better.)

I like the sleeping pad advocated by Bicycle Touring Pro which has an internal manual air pump operated by repeatedly thumping one spot, for which he has an extensive review but of course I would have to wait for that in the mail.

    Any other things. Thanks.

I know the equipment is not ideal but I only want to do a short out&back.

  • In skyfall why did Bond crash his motorcycle into the bridge?

It would have seemed more logical to find a ramp, or just leave the motorcycle.

But he purposefully crashes into the guardrail so he is thrown over the side?

  • How do you go about getting prescription cycling glasses?

-so they don't fog up during a race

-so they don't cut my eye

-of course block the sun and cut glare

-so I could ride with them at night

I heard Tifosi make them but so do other brands.

I wonder about the cost of such a venture.

But don't want to look like that one kid at basketball camp.

  • Do you think bicycles are appearing more in movies, television shows and print ads?

Hal Jordan displayed two road bikes in his apartment in the most recent Green Lantern movie.

    Do you have any examples?

What do you think is motivating these appearances?
