  • Would you replace your pet for a "twin" to match?

I work for a vet clinic, recently one of the clients had to put their all black cat to sleep. Her daughter was at "grandma's house" and the client said she was going to go get another all black cat before she picked up her daughter so that she didn't know the old one died. Would you do this? Why or why not?

I'm asking because I'm extremely curious. I know there will be many different answers and no answer is the "right' one, so the person who explains their choice in the best detail can have best answer.

  • Is there anything I can do about animal cruelty in India when I'm a USA citizen?

There is a "shelter" in India that has horrible conditions, dogs eat their young to not starve to death, animals are trapped in what looks like bird cages with up to 15 dogs a cage (according to http://www.facebook.com/ButcherofHyderabad ) . Is there any way to research if it's factual, and if it turns out to be factual is there anything I can do as a citizen of the USA?

  • Cockatiel behavior 411?

I'm having to re-learn everything I'd ever learned when I was a child due to having recently taken in a foster-parrot that was about to be euthanized due to her being born in the wild(it's illegal to release her back into the wild since she is not native and the local bird sanctuaries cant take her for whatever reasons.. The vets office she was brought to was just going to euthanize her. Maybe some of you can tell me what's going on in this birds brain and the right ways I'm supposed to respond? 10 points to whoever gives the most info and good sources.

Lovie the female Cockatiel does these things:

When I leave the room she'll do a cute little cherp-peep then if I peek back around the corner she has her neck stretched farrrr over and leaning trying to look at where I went (maybe?).

When I go near her cage she looks me over allllll over and constantly is sizing me up

When filling her food and water (i've had her 4 days) she used to try to fly as far away from my hands as possible even with her wings clipped and screaming, then she would just step away or move to another part of the cage, and now she just stares at me and if I get too close she slaps her beak on the perch and hisses at me.

When I make kissys at her she grinds her beak and fluffs up and starts cleaning her feathers.

When I stand near her cage and ignore her she stretches her wings one at a time and sticks her foot under them then she stretches up both her wings and starts cleaning her feathers.

Also, I read something about baths.. what is that, why do they need/want it, and how can I provide it to a wild cockatiel?

  • How do I know if I have rabies?

I foster animals for a rescue group. I had a nursing cat in my care for 9 days and she slowly went psycho.. I figured it was because she was feral and was locked in a cage.. this cat had only 3 teeth and was sickly looking.. she killed one of her kittens last night, and then she attacked me. I got bit on my wrist and my and sadly she didn't have any vaccinations, so the organization director explained that she had to be sent for testing.. however, since the bite I've developed stomach aches and fever, (I'm hoping this is just an infection from the bite) I have an appt. tomorrow with the doctor but if these are signs of rabies I'll go to the hospital..

  • So what are your experiences with puppies?

I'm fostering some puppies and this is the first time I've fostered them this young. Since the vet and other volunteers are celebrating the holidays and I know the puppies are in good hands with their mother I figured I'd ask the simple questions here and see if I can get any reliable resources (links, etc.).

    1. The pups came into my care from a hoarders home at 2 weeks old, they are 3 weeks now, when should they go to the vet for a checkup?

    2. When is good to start helping them wean? How do you know when it's time? The mother keeps leaving them alone for longer periods each day, and having trouble producing enough milk (we bottle fed the first few days they were with us until she was able to produce again).

    3. Are there any signs I should keep an eye our for (other than obvious runny nose/eyes) to make sure they don't get sick? (their poop is brown and firm, one of the puppies has worms)

    4. When can I de-worm them? (I'll talk to their vet about this too, but if I can do it sooner than later I'd rather get the parasites out of them)

    5. I heard that the mom's milk could be infected because of her previous bad nutrition. Is there a way to tell other than having a vet check it? (I doubt it is since the puppies gain 2oz a day and so far are healthy looking).

    6. We are feeding the mother three to four times a day (whenever she'll eat): puppy food and a formula that our rescue coordinator gave us to increase her nutrition and milk production. She also got pet-tinic and was de wormed a week ago. Should I feed her anything else now that she's running low on milk?

Thanks in advanced!! (links have pictures of them)

  • So I need to get a present for someone who loves his xbox360?

My family has started this "game" sort of deal for the holidays and I got my cousins name, he was in the Army and he loves his xbox 360 and he likes to buy stuff from thinkgeek.com (such as a stainless steel spork).. The catch is that we aren't allowed to buy something for the gifts, we have to make something, grow something, or bake something.. He's a 25 year old too and works at a night club, I have no clue what I should make/grow/bake. Any suggestions(I'm not growing or baking him any drugs btw) ?

  • What is the difference between a "share" and a "room"?

I've been looking at rental properties online, some say they are a "share" as opposed to a "room". Right now I'm renting a room/bathroom/closet combo in a condo.. what exactly is a share versus a room?

  • What's the best and quickest way to heal my feet?

I went for a 3.5 mile walk with my dog today and had forgotten to change my shoes beforehand, so I was in flip-flops (some people know them as thongs) and my feet are swollen, blistered, and bleeding. How do I get them healed fast? I have two midterms Tuesday, and I cant even walk across my condo without blood trails.

  • I need help stocking my tank again..?

So my 10g tank has been unexpectedly but pleasently upgraded to a 20g tank with a aqueon 20 filter. I want a tropical community and my mom suggested these based on previous answers to the 10g:

    4 cory

    10 neon tetras

    3 mollies

any reason why this setup wouldn't work? Thanks in advance

  • What should I stock my 10 gallon fishtank with?

I am starting my first Tropical community. I already have a coldwater tank with one goldfish. My tank is going to be 10g, a heater, a hood, a light, probably two plants (potted in glass and substrate, I want barebottom) and a few river rocks. So my water quantity would actually be about 8 or 9 gallons. I like showy fish and some invertibrates are cool, but no eels/snakes and I dont want a sucker fish unless its a bristle nose. What species, how many will fit in the tank, and are they compatible with my setup?

    Thanks!

  • What is your best guess on breed?

I am very well aware of how few cats actually have a "breed" however I do notice differences with these cats compared to the average DSH DLH and DMH. These cats are usually black with brown/sable highlights and a dark undertone of black tabby stripes. High cheekbones, very petite cats. Their heads are generally small about the size of a golf ball. The tail is long, about one and a fourth the length of the body and usually has longer hair than the rest of the body. The fur is silky and rabbit like. Ears are full and erect. As for personality/behavior, it is difficult to determine. One is clumsy and doesn't have the ability to land on her feet, she also drools, so we think it may be neurological. Overall they are very trusting and warm up quickly to new people and adjust well to change. Playfull and curious and no low tones, they have very high pitched sounds, including growls.

Note: The cats Ive described are all feral cats that I have been catching and spay/neuter, there are already 3 generations of these and they all have the same features.

  • I got two fish yesterday and would like some advice?

Yesterday I was at the fair and my family and I managed to win eleven little goldfish with the ball toss thing. We opted to trade in ten of the little fish for one large fish. So now I have a large shubunkin and some sort of little redhead/redtailed and white goldfish. The little fish "Nemo" has one fin smaller than the other (it probably was eaten) and the big fish is calico but doesnt appear sickly but whenever it swims the little fish does summersaults in its wake... Im very well aware of the quality and life expectancy of fair fish, however, i would like to try and create a happy environment while they last. I have them in a 5 or 8 gallon tank (its not full only 2 gallons because i ran out of spring water) I'm aware that one large goldfish needs at least ten gallons (am i right?) but until they reach the two week mark still alive I dont want to upgrade as I didnt even plan on having fish in the first place (my 5 year old cousin was supposed to take them home). I am ready though- as unplanned as this was- to take care of the fish for the next few years of their lives (if they make it) and would like to know what things to put in the tank to protect nemo from the big fish and if i can use a filter instead of live plants as i understand plants make it even messier as they will rot.

  • My neutered male is cat spraying blood?

My 4 year old neutered male cat has never sprayed before this month. We have taken him to the vet and he was put on antibiotics for struvite(sp?) crystal type of UTI. He sprays blood at least once a day the antibiotics dont seem to be helping. things that have changed recently: we got a new kitten a few months ago she is 10 months old, and we moved our furniture around. With the new kitten he loves her and they play but they also try to have sex? Both of them are fixed thank goodness, but could this behavior cause the spraying? Another factor to consider is my dog has bladder stones that are struvite in composition she is on S/D to dissolve them. Could bladder stones make the cat spray blood? If it is medical then once he is better will he continue to spray out of habit?

  • Does anyone know about clumsy cats?

From the minute I let her in the house our new kitten (born feral) is the most clumsy cat I have ever met in my life. She falls off the couch, the bed, trips on the rug (which is not sticking up) she runs into chairs, and she seems unsure of her footing. We've taken her to the vet (to get fixed) but they weren't worried about it. Is this normal? she's already somewhere between 7-8 months old.

  • So I got reprimanded today..?

at school I was chilling out with my friends and I started talking about one of our guy friends (who was sitting right there) the conversation was following the lines of "oh yeah ----- took a class at that campus and got stuck with his ex". The new girl sitting with us got all offended that I'd talk about his "personal life" in front of people yadda yadda. He turned to her and said, "No worries, you remind me of my ex anyways." Have you ever had someone tell you to your face you remind them of your ex?
