  • How can I (creatively) replace a failed drive?

I have an old workstation that, simply put, is not worth buying a new hard drive for.

I have IDE and USB drives out the wazoo, but no spare SATA drives to swap in.

It will boot to USB, but won't do anything without a MBR.

So, I'm looking for ideas, maybe in the $20-or-less range.

  • What is the chemical structure of an alcohol made from l-glucose / r-glucose?

Since the chemical structure of these sugars are mirror-images of each other, would the alcohols produced have structures that mirror each other? Or would the fermentation reaction eliminate the difference, resulting in the same end result?

  • WTF? This made me laugh...?

I was just browsing a website, comparing prices for various brands of razors, when I noticed a link...

    "Sell your used items"

Used items? Like the disposable razors I'm looking at?

    Say it with me now....

    Eeeeewwwww!!!!!!

What sort of internet absurdity have you seen lately?

  • Is there a way to combine IRAs for a married couple?

My wife and I just received notice that the "low balance" threshold on our IRAs has jumped from $1000 to $5000, and the associated fee has jumped from $25 to $40 per year.

The net result of this is that together, we're going to get knocked for $80/year, and so we're looking to remedy the situation.

Is there a way that we can put these two accounts together, so we're not getting hit twice?

What tax/penalty consequenses might we need to know/consider?

  • How do I find the IP of a router, from the LAN side?

One of my routers has malfunctioned, and I want to log in from the LAN side to see if I can get it working. I was able to get the network back up using another router's DHCP, but I don't know what IP the malfunctioning router is using on the LAN side.

I have the MAC address for it, but administration from the WAN side is turned off, so that is not an option.

I've tried the hardware reset, but that doesn't seem to be working, either.

Ideas? (Aside from throwing it away, LOL.)

  • What game is being played in the courtyard, in "A Beautiful Mind"?

In the scene where John Nash is observing pigeon behavior, he is challenged to a board game using black and white pebbles, on a square grid board. What is this game?

  • What is the "appropriate" thing to do?

On the way home from the fireworks this evening, I saw several people run into the street... right into the path of an ambulance. They managed to not get hit, but it got me wondering:

Hypothetically, how would the situation be handled, if an ambulance was involved in an accident with a pedestrian, while on a call?

It seems to me that two ambulances would need to be dispatched... (one to take the call the ambulance was on, and one for the pedestrian who was hit) ... and the ambulance that was involved in the incident would remain at the scene, just like any other vehicle involved in an accident.

    Thoughts?

  • Problem watching "Twilight" DVD on computer?

I'm trying to watch a rented "Twilight" DVD on my computer, but the system keeps choking on it. It takes forever to recognize the disc, and it "hangs" right after the trailers, before the movie starts.

I'm thinking it's not the computer itself, because the other discs I got this weekend worked fine.

Anyone else have this problem? Suggestions? (Other than using a "regular" DVD player, I don't have one available here.)

  • The Bear and the Rabbit?

A bear is answering nature's call, when a rabbit hops by. The rabbit pauses, drops a few pellets, and is about to hop away, when the bear asks, "Don't you just hate it when you do that, and it sticks to your fur?"

The rabbit thinks for a moment, and replies, "Gee, I've never really had that problem."

So the bear picks up the rabbit, wipes himself, puts the rabbit down, and walks away.

And the moral of the story: Be careful what you say, and who you say it to. <g>

  • I use a vehicle I don't own for business, but I pay for the gas. How do I report this deduction?

The key here is that I don't own the vehicle, which makes Schedule C, Part 4 difficult.

I am an independent contractor, and I use a company vehicle, but I have to pay for gas, but can't figure out how to explain it on paper.

PLEASE!!! No guesses... I'm looking for links to information here. tried the IRS website, but couldn't find the right "needle" in that "haystack", and figured I can't be the first person ever to deal with this.

  • A cat yelling "STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"?

Where does this line come from?

In the movie, "Over The Hedge", the Persian cat, Tiger yells "Stella!!!!" to the skunk, Stella (of course!).

This is a joke for the parents, as there is a classic TV show (or was it a movie?) that involves a male character who also bellowed "Stella!!!!!!!!!"

I remember the shout, but can't remember where it came from.

  • Motherboard problem?

OK, I've seen this before, and it turned out to be something simple and stupid, but I can't remember what.

I'm rebuilding a computer, and when I hit the power button, it lights up for about 1/4 sec, and stops.

When it was last used, the motherboard (Soyo K7-VEM) and processor were both working, and the power supply tests OK. I've disconnected all the PCI cards (just in case), and rechecked the pinouts for the switch leads.

Anybody have other ideas of what could be wrong?

(I'm assuming that the MB and Proc are both functional, I want to rule everything out before buying replacements.)

  • Is bribery inherently illegal, or do the circumstances determine legality?

    For example:

You accidentally discover someone is cheating on their boyfriend/girlfriend and they offer you money to not tell.

Are they a jerk? Of course!!! But is the act of bribery itself illegal, if no other laws are being broken in the process?

  • My DHCP lease doesn't automatically renew. Why?

I have internet service, but (of course!) I can't get past the "covering our butt" answers from my ISP to get a "real" answer.

When my DHCP lease expires, it does not automatically renew all the time. Some times it will, some times it won't, and I get the famous "I can't find the internet" page in my browser.

When this happens, I have to manually make my router release/renew its IP.

Why does this happen, and what can I do to make my IP renew automatically?

  • Tax consequences of Sale of Stock?

I am looking for information regarding the tax consequences and reporting for the sale of stock acquired through an Employee Stock-Ownership plan. I've been searching through the IRS site, found lots of info, but haven't found the "right" info that applies to this situation.

I know I'm not the first person ever to do this, so hopefully SOMEONE out there has done this and can point me to the right info.

(And no, suggesting that I hire a tax expert isn't help. I am asking for help RESEARCHING the answer.)

  • What is the most "not-car friendly" food you've eaten WHILE driving?

It could be something super-messy, something too big for one-handed eating, even something that took your attention away from the road...

The key ingredient here, is anything you've looked back and thought, "Why did I even TRY to eat that whjile driving? Was I Nuts?"

Please, only TRUE answers, best one (that I believe!) gets the points! ;-)
