I'm curious whether there is a formal distinction, or is it just a matter of how long a belief system has been around and how many followers it has? If the latter, is there a recognised benchmark when a cult can be recognised as a religion?

I live next to a busy road, and I almost never hear anyone with any apparent taste in any kind of music whatsoever playing their stereos at high volume. And I'm not even all that picky about music - my own tastes cover a huge range of genres, and I don't automatically call any music crap just because I don't personally like it. But day in, day out there's a constant stream of loud, bland, generic pap streaming past my window at high volume. Why are people so keen to broadcast their utter lack of taste?
