To become a PA--Get a 2nd Bachelor degree?
I recently graduated with a BA in Intercultural Communications. Prior to this degree, I was a Bio major so I took a lot of science courses, except Organic Chem (the bane of my life) which I tried avoiding twice, hence the changing of majors (I was a Bio major not for the purposes of going into the medical field.. long story short, I became unhappy and just want to be done and over with this degree so I switched to Communications). This all happened when I thought law school was a good investment. Needless to say, too many grads and not enough legal jobs to go around in this economy and the $120k debt does not help. So, I now changed my mind and was suggested by a coworker to try out the PA program since I took some science courses before.
So, after reviewing the pre-reqs, it appears I am missing only but 1 organic chem (3 credit/semester hours). I have never taken anatomy or physiology, as it was not required in my previous Bio major. Most of my sciences course grades ranges mostly in the A's and B's, maybe 1 or 2 C's. My overall GPA right now is 2.9, which is not spectacular because I screwed up my grades a few years ago because of a family problem (parents became unemployed and I need to support them financially).
My question, should I return to school and finish a 2nd BA in Biology? If so, this may push me back up to a year or more. I'm 27, barely making enough money now at my paralegal job to support myself, and I am worried that I would be better off just stop going to school and work like a grunt and pray for that good salary/pay raise somewhere. I also am aware of the volunteer medical hours, and I plan to commit into doing this from the date I start the 2nd degree until graduation.
And another reason for the 2nd degree is that I hope it will help raise my 2.9 GPA and all of this work might make me a better candidate for the program. I hope.
Please, I could use some good advice. Thank you.
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)9 years agoTaxi cabs or pay for parking in New Orleans?
First timer to visit the French Quarter and the Garden District in this weekend. Can someone please confirm which is cheaper or preferred--pay for a taxi cab to visit these locations or pay a fee to park my car in a lot? I don't want to park in the streets because I can't risk having my car towed or get parking tickets from meter maids.
Thank you for helping!
5 AnswersNew Orleans1 decade agoChildhood Trauma--how to accept it and move on?
I think I should ask this type of question to a therapist but I don't have the money for one.
Me and my family moved to the U.S. 20 years ago. When we first went to a public school, I was in the 5th grade and my younger sister was in the 4th grade. We didn't know anything about child molesters or bad people in general. The school we were in was a very low socioeconomic area--imagine teachers babysitting for paychecks and literally no security guards. Anyways, I still remember there is this one man. He was about 35 years of age, a substitute teacher. I believe he was teaching my sister's class at the time. Slowly, I noticed that she was acting more quiet than usual. One day, me and her were walking in the hallway. Next thing I know, that man walked toward us and grabbed her from me. He threatened to tell immigration on our family to have us deported if I don't go back to my class and stay quiet. He also threatened to kill me and my sister. My sister kept crying for me to save her but I was so scared I didn't know what to do. I just didn't want her to get hurt, so I forced myself back to class and closed my eyes and pretend I didn't see that happened. Please note that I was also being bullied in my class IN FRONT of my teacher. When I told my mother as well as other teachers, the principal and every adult in the school did nothing about it. At that time, bullying was considered something 'normal' that kids do. So as much as I wanted to save my sister by at least telling the teacher, I knew they wouldn't do anything about it.
Fast forward to present day. My younger sister had moved on and had forgiven me for not saving her. She is living a happy life--going to school doing what she loves and a loving husband. To this day, it is extremely difficult for me to move on. I wish I can go back in time and beat the sh*t out of that man. I wish I will one day bump into him again and tear out that pedophile b*lls. I feel so guilty for not doing anything at the time, even though everyone tells me I was only 10 and couldn't fight a man who was 6 foot tall. I was in an environment that no one will help me even when I begged them to.
I just want to find some peace and solace in this. Does anyone have any tips after with such experience?
1 AnswerPsychology1 decade agoProposal to Marriage--All or Nothing, what to do?!?
It's Christmas Day and my gift from my boyfriend of 2 years gave me an engagement ring. I'm 26 and he's 28 and I'm very wary of marriages, considering the fact that our parents had fought in front of me all of my life. I always think marriage should be an equal partnership whereas if I'm working and making a certain amount of pay, it's only fair if he does the same. Same as emotional: I have to be honest with you just as I expect you to be honest with me.
Here's the problem: If I say yes to him, I know that we don't have to be married right away, especially I'm still in school and possibly hope to get into law school soon. If I say "I'm not ready yet", he will accept that and ask me in a later time. If I say No, he will break up with me, stating that this will confirm that I don't want to be him. I don't love him like you will see in romance novels and whatnot. I care about him deeply and I see him as someone very special to me. Someone I will go anywhere with and do anything with, and trust all my secrets with. I have already told him all of this before how I felt, but he still insist that he wants to be with me. But if I don't take this ring, that is his final straw and he will break up with me. He doesn't want to stay friends either.
He is extremely nice person and does anything for me. He is willing to cook, clean, whatever I ask or need. However, because he live paycheck to paycheck, he is constantly struggling with bills. Sometimes he ends up homeless for awhile until finding a place to live temporarily. When I told him how he is going to afford to marry me (even though I will pay for half the wedding and it's going to be a VERY small wedding) or a family if he can't even take care of himself, his answer was, "Well that's why I need help. I hope to move in with you so that I can get help pay bills and stop moving place to place."
I don't know.. I don't want to take the ring and then say No later. This is it--either I take the ring or I say goodbye to the 2 year relationship that we had. PLEASE HELP, especially those who were married before.
7 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoHELP!!! How to deal with racists?
2 weeks ago, my friend found racial writings/slurs on my car and his car on my driveway. My friend came by to visit me before I was leaving town. And as he was leaving to his car later that night, he discovered some punkass wrote things like "F*ng Azns" and "I hate you" on our windshields by using the dust on my friend's car. Unfortunately, my friend didn't know better and wiped them off before the cops got here because he didn't want to me to get more stressed out as it is (hence, I'm going on vacation).
Anyways, a police report was done and the Home Owner Assoc. was contacted. They said they will look into getting security cameras installed. Last Wednesday, some thing happened but again my friend is retarded and wiped them off without calling the cops. It wasn't until I got back when he told me about the incident. Again, according to my friend, it was written using the dust on his dirty car. There was no damage to both our cars, no paint, etc. Of course I couldn't call the cops now on the 2nd incident since it's been 5 days too late.
Obviously it's going to happen again. I had lived in this neighborhood and me and my family gets along with everyone else. We all know each other. However, the past year some people who don't belong in the neighborhood has been driving in here (it's not a gated community) and had been vandalizing other people's cars. The racists stuff on my car was the first time reported here. My friend said that when he pulled up to my house, he did saw a strange man hanging around in my neighbor's driveway. And that they had exchanged looks but said nothing to each other. Of course, without evidence, what can I do..?
Anyways, this is my first time dealing with people like this. I am nervous and afraid of how much worse it can get. The cops know about this but there's nothing they can do. If I find these punks, do I confront them or would the situation become worse if I do? I'm more worried about my parents than what happens to my car. How am I emotionally suppose to deal with this problem?
P.S. I don't have any personal problems at work or at other people. If there was a problem, I always try to resolve it and I don't give out my address to people who don't know me.

2 AnswersDrawing & Illustration1 decade agoDid I get ripped off from the Doctor's office?!?
I have no health insurance. I was tested positive for a curable STD (caught it from my cheating ex.. didn't know he was cheating at the time until now) so I wanted the HIV and HEP test. I never been to this office before... it was a small clinic near a hospital closeby where I lived, so I chose here. The facility looks clean, the nurses are alright. However, their policy, especially if you have no insurance: you pay before you get the treatment.
I was told the HIV/HEP test would cost $438.00. I was in a lot of pain at that time, and I was still in shock to hear that I caught something like this from a man I loved and trusted for 6 years. So I handed my credit card and that was all.
Now, I have a bill from Quest Diagnostics (the laboratory) asking for $506.00. I have no problem paying them... you can see the work they have done on the itemized bill. All the doctor did was draw my blood and send it to them for $438.00. I was told that was for the bloodwork.
I'm new at this, so can someone tell me how much is a doctor office suppose to charge in this case? Am I being cheated off? If so, what can I do?

3 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoMarble-sized hard lump, between right leg and "private area"... Any idea?
I know this is the possible the worst place to get medical advise, but I have no health insurance and I could use every bit of advise from anyone who had the same problem before. About a week ago, I was showering and found a small lump, I guess on my upper bikini line (where the right leg joins with the abdomen). You can see the lump and feel it when you press against the skin, it's about the size of a marble and it is hard. It hurts too, and ever since I touched it, it felt like pain pressed against it. However, it wasn't severe, and I was told by a coworker it can be an ingrown hair which is normal (fyi, I'm not very hairy and I haven't shaved down there for months now, never felt I needed too).
Now, 2 days ago there's also pain to the lower intestinal area, it became a "cramp" pain that a woman feels during her period. However, my period just ended! It is so painful that I cannot sleep, cannot focus, and cannot ignore it. At first I thought I must've ate something bad and caught a bug on Friday night at the movies, because the cramping pain makes me have diarrhea (lol diarrhea, okay, jokes aside..). But no matter how many times I run to the bathroom, I find no relieve of the pain and only way is to use painkillers like Aspirin. In addition, I also tried Pepto Bismol, assuming perhaps the pain is from the urge of running to the bathroom. But it is not; I still feel the pain although no longer the urge to potty.
I will see the doc first thing in the morning, but I am not sure to see a gynocolegist or not. Any ideas of what this can be?
**Please note, the skin feels fine, the lump is UNDER the skin. You do not see any redness on the skin, just regular color. I have no fever thus far so I'm assuming it's not an infection.
1 AnswerWomen's Health1 decade agoLethal heart murmur in cats?
Recently, someone I know has a Himalayan Persian was diagnosed with a hearth murmur. After seeing 2 cardiologist, they had determine that he may have less than 3 years to live. He is less than a year old, and was bought from a breeder who claimed to stop breeding her cats and he was the last litter.
Can anyone tell me what heart disease this is? Hearth murmur is not usually lethal--I have one myself, but it's not abnormal so it's manageable--and the vets say it's a congenital thing.
4 AnswersCats1 decade agoDell printers and regular printers?
I'm looking to buy a printer, and I found someone who wants to sell a brandnew all-in-1 printer Dell model 968. I went shopping at Walmart and found $40.00 Canon Pixma MP150. I just need a printer that isn't hard on ink, it is for school use so a lot of printing will be done.
Are Dell printers compatible with PC's? And will I need to buy ink straight from Dell to refill the printer?
3 AnswersPrinters1 decade agoHow do you "intervene" freeloading, lazy relatives?
My brother and sis-in-law are both irresponsible of almost anything they do, including parenting. My brother, against my parents advice, moved up north and opened a cellphone business. Of course, with the recession, that went downhill fast. My parents had loaned them over 100k, even helping them buy a new house up there which only lasted for 2 years until it was foreclosed.
So, it's been almost 3 years and my brother and his family had been living w/ my parents. I too lived with my parents, to save money to buy a home and going to school at the moment, but I always have a job and help out with the mortgage. Long story short, knowing that they are broke and everyone around them trying to advise them to save money, they continuously go out and buy lunch/dinner instead of eating free food at home. They continously go and buy things like laptops, even a new car which they claim they "need" but they don't, because it only get driven once a month.
In addition, they are spending $1500 a month to pay for my niece's school for special children. She has Di-Cru-Chat, so teaching her to talk and learn is difficult. Despite how expensive school is and that she needs it, my brother and his wife sometimes do not take her to school stating, "Oh she woke up at 5 am so I'm letting her sleep in tonight." There is no bedtime for my niece, btw, it's whenever they felt she should go to bed which is around 11 p.m. or even 12 p.m.
My sis in law doesn't work. She used to have a small part-time working at home for 4 hours a day, a chinese interpreter. She quit that job after she had another baby. Which btw, if you have no money, why would you try to have another baby? Anyways, the baby is almost 5 or 6 months. She constantly has to be around the baby, sleeping with her, carrying her EVERYWHERE in the house. She refuse to work stating she needs to be there all the time for the baby. The interpreting job will take her back, and she is allowed a break during work, but she refuse to do it because of the baby.
Now my brother is jobless. They're both jobless, they're both always saying they're broke and can't move out. They are leaving lights on in the house, already destroyed the bathroom allowing mold to grow in the walls (btw, they didn't pay my parents back for the repair, not even one penny), and even at home doing NOTHING, is too lazy to teach my other niece that needs attention to learn to read and communicate. They spend their whole day either sleeping or watching youtube, or go out buying food or to the mall. What's even worse, they even tried to convince my parents to move swap rooms (they are living in the garage right now, it's pretty big though and has its own a/c), because they felt it's too dusty for the baby. The baby is fine and is not sick, they just NEVER take the baby outside the home with excuses like "oh it's too hot today" or "it's going to be much fuss." How dare they ask my parents, who saved their *** from living in the streets, to live in the garage.
I tried talking to my parents, but they strongly believe in family morale. I want to move out so bad because this is what I have to deal with everyday, knowing they are taking advantage of my parents and for years to come, showing no signs of being responsible. What should I do? Fyi, as soon as I move out, they are planning to take over my room. I am staying also just to keep them from taking over completely.
**I'm sorry this is so long. It's a LONG story.. you will be surprised of some of the things they are doing would piss you off too, like fraud to get more money from the government. In addition, they believe my cat is "dirty" and makes people ill. They are trying to get rid of my cat because they don't like him.
1 AnswerFamily1 decade agoGiving blood requirement to join Army?
I'm a petite girl, but I have been checked out by doctors and was told I'm healthy, just got a high metabolism so gaining weight hasn't been easy for me. That been said, I weight about 100 lbs, 5'4 inch. I've always wanted to donate blood but turned down because of my weight.
Now I'm curious about joining the Army, and I was told by my b/f who's brother is in the marines, that if you can't give blood, you are not an "able" person to join. Is weight also a problem to getting in? Gaining weight is difficult for me but I can try using protein shakes, etc.
5 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoCoworker problem? What would you do...?
What would you do if..... your coworker said to you, "Use common sense."
The argument started with her on the phone working, and I was doing my own work on the computer. I picked up another line and it was her son's teacher on the phone. Mind you, she and the teacher speaks on the phone on regular basis usually about his attitude in class or how he's doing (the father was killed last year). Anyways, I told her that she was on the other line right now and the teacher, in a calm voice, told me it's okay and that to let her know to call her back.
After the coworker is done on the phone, I told her the teacher called. As soon as that happened, she snapped at me, saying why I didn't give her the line asap because it had to do with her son's counseling. I had no idea it was an emergency, and figured if it was an emergency, wouldn't that person call her on her cell phone (which is next to her)? I told her that, and her respond was that the cell phone doesn't work all the time, thus she only gives out the work number for emergency use. Later, she apologized for snapping at me and said that any phone calls related to her son, to give it to her. So I said okay. She calls the teacher back and told her it wasn't her fault that she didn't tell me it was an important call.
Later on during the day, I mentioned to her that for future reference, if you're expecting a phone call, can you please at least let me know. Again, she became very defensive and said that any phone calls related to her family must go directly to her. Please note that, earlier today, her mom called so they can talk about the thunderstorm outside and how scary it was. When I responded that, with any parent I worked with, they all use their cell phones as emergency contacts and that in no way, I could've known that teacher call was about counseling or something she can't wait. Then she said, "Why don't you use common sense."
I got very pissed off and got my manager involved. Needless to say, it ended with the coworker crying home and her hating me. She just started shaking and crying and keeps saying, "It was just a phone call, it wasn't a big deal why did you get the boss involved". She is a great person, but I had experienced difficulty many times working with her because she lashes out her stress to me before. I already told my boss I'm ready to quit because I've been very patient working with her and she can't talk to me like that.
Now... what would you do if you are in my shoes?
NOTE: I'm a very happy-go-lucky girl, I shrug bad attitudes off and move on to the next thing, and keep my own personal problems in check before I go to work.
