  • MSW (Social Worker) salary in Houston?

I am interested in how much MSW (Social Workers) make in Houston. I've looked at salary websites and the range of salaries is quite big. I'm looking into social work in the medical field. I was wondering if someone can share how much one makes.

  • Special Ed Teachers - what do you do?

I'm a certified ESL teacher in Texas. I'm interested in teaching Special Ed students. In our state I don't need to get extra education in Special Ed. All I need to do is to take and pass the Special Ed exam.

I was wondering what exactly Special Ed teachers do (besides actual teaching, of course). I'm thinking of taking classes at a local Uni, because I believe that I won't be able to pass the exam without the actual knowledge of Special Ed. The classes will cost me about $10K, so it's a very difficult decision for me to make. I want to be sure I'll like the job.

  • How to make baby fall asleep?

My baby is 4 months old. She sleeps about 10 hours at night. The night sleep is not very good, she wakes up a lot, sometimes she is awake for 1-2 hours. During the day she will have 2-3 very short (20-30 min) naps. I don't mind short naps, I know it's normal. The problem is I have VERY hard times putting her to sleep. She hates her bouncy and her swing, co-sleeping doesn't help - she thinks we're playing together, she hates rocking - starts crying and tries to get out of my arms. I can see she is tired, but no matter how hard she (and I, of course) tries, she can't fall asleep. I tried everything, and each nap is an achievement for me. It takes me about 40-50 minutes to put her to sleep. I'm exhausted and don't know what to do. When she doesn't have enough sleep during the day, she cries uncontrollably for an hour before her nigh nap.

    - I have read a bunch of books on sleep - no help with their techniques

    - I know when my baby is tired

    - Crying out didn't work for us

  • Low lying placenta - C-section vs. Natural Birth?

I am a little over 37 weeks. I had my last ultrasound and my placenta hasn't moved through the pregnancy, so officially I have a low lying placenta. It is about 1.5-1.7 sm away from the os. My doc wants me to have a vaginal delivery, but everywhere I've read, it says that if the placenta is 2 or less sm away from the os, it should be a c-section. The doc says we should start with the natural birth and then, if I need it, she will do a c-section. I don't want to spend half a day trying vaginal and then end up with a c-section anyway. I really need another opinion, but there isn't much time left. Has anyone had a similar situation? Can I insist on a c-section? And if I do, would the c-section be covered by my insurance, since it's my preference, not the doctor's?

  • LAX to Disneyland taxi for a large party?

There will be 3 adults and 2 kids. We are arriving to LAX and staying at Hyatt Regency near Disneyland. How much is a taxi from the airport to the hotel? The hotel offered a van service for $100. Is that a good deal? Are there any other cheaper ways to get to the hotel?

  • Resign in the middle of a school year - consequences???

I am a middle school teacher and this is my first year teaching. I just signed a contract for the year 2008-2009. I am pregnant and will be having a baby in September. Unfortunately, I do not qualify for FMLA. I started my first year in November and to qualify for FMLA one has to have worked a full academic year. For me a full academic year will be in November, but my birth is in September. I was told that I have 2 options: resign right now or try to get a leave of absence. I’m sure my leave of absence will be denied. I do not want to resign right now (I will lose my salary and medical insurance). I was planning to stay and let the school know 2 weeks before the birth that I am leaving. Our union representative told me though that if I try to do that, the school will try to revoke my certificate for a year and will make sure I won’t get hired again. My question is do you know anyone who has been in a similar situation? What are the chances of the school revoking my certification?

  • Can't find a teaching job. Any suggestions?

I’m a certified teacher in Texas (English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 & ESL) trying to find a job in a public school. I applied for more than 100 jobs in numerous school districts, but I haven’t heard anything from any of them. I don’t know what to do. I’m originally from Russia, have a MA degree in ESL from there, almost no accent. I have 6 years of teaching experience (taught ESL in Russia & Asia), but I have never taught in the U.S. before. Any suggestions on how to find a job?

  • Speech-pathology programs, only one in my city?

I am thinking of getting a graduate degree in Speech-Pathology. Unfortunately, there's only one University in my city that offers the degree. Because it is the only one, it is extremely difficult to get in. I'm not sure I'll be able to. Relocation is not possible due to family residing here and other problems. What are my options in the situation like this one? How is an online degree viewed by employers? Would you suggest getting an online degree as an alternative?

    Thanks
