I'm a retired TV studio crew technician who lives in San Francisco with my husband of 24 years. I am a voracious reader, a good cook, an opera lover, and I also co-moderate a discussion board, Larry's 66 Diner.

  • Auto mechanics, should I tip you if you do a free repair?

I have an old car with a rear view mirror that is loose. I thought it might need a bracket replaced, so e-mailed the local dealership to inquire about ordering the part. One of the mechanics there e-mailed me back to say that he thought he could fix it without replacing any parts. I asked for an estimate, and he said no charge but I might have to be patient if the shop is busy.

My question is this: If this mechanic fixes my mirror at no charge, should I offer a tip? If so, how much? I live in a major U.S. city that has a high cost of living.

I'm also wondering if the free repair is a come-on so that he will find other items that need to be fixed -- for a fee, of course.

I would especially appreciate feedback from auto mechanics.

  • U.S. to U.K. Recipe Conversion: Applesauce and Walnuts?

I want to give my favorite applesauce cake recipe to my friend in Wales, but I am having trouble converting some of the amounts. Can anyone tell me what are the equivalents to "3/4 cup chopped walnuts" and "1-1/2 cups thick applesauce?" I've tried various online converters, and none seem to have weights for these ingredients.

Also, is "dark brown sugar" called something else in the U.K.?

Thank you very much for your help!

  • Walk-in Salon Christmas Tip?

I go to a walk-in salon, but I don't have a regular stylist. I just go with whoever can take me first. In a case like this, how do you handle Christmas tipping? Several different people have done my hair one, two or three times each. Should I give everyone a small amount, or should I give the person who takes care of me in December a large tip?
