It is NOT the James Oliver Curwood book of the same name i read this in paperback form 25 or 30 years ago and it's about a young drifter who arrives in Alaska at one of the smaller ports by ship i believe between WWI and WWII but could be after WWII and the life he begins there as a longshoreman and other work,there is explicit sex in this book so is not a juvenile read..but is NOT an "adult"type book The old Gold dredges the author describes are many stories tall and made their own pond to move on.

Does anybody get frustrated with food stores having 3 or more "no clerk" check out lines and NO assisted lines? I have waited 20 min or longer for a clerk assisted line to open along with a dozen or more others (melting Ice Cream in cart) etc.and when used most of the non clerk lines required assistance to complete the transaction,it seems all of the big chain stores are doing this now.what do you think.

when he first came into our lives..abandoned by his owners in a neighboring apartment complex.He was mostly Siamese along with who knows what else, dirty and smelly like the Tom cat he was,we fed him when he came around and he would sleep under our bed now and then,but never staying long.

When it came time for us to move he was out doing Tomcat things and we left him behind,but one of our friends soon told us that he was with her and had been injured in a fight so we came back and found that he had an abscess on his cheek. Well anyway $375.00 later we had a "snipped" bathed and somewhat angry ex Tomcat living with us.

For about 3 weeks yowling constantly "Harpo" as my wife named him adjusted to becoming a inside cat,the vet said he was about two years old when treated.

Harpo became a loving friend to both of us and got along well with our cats that came later.Age though catches up with all of us and it caught up with him..first came thyroid problems which we were able to treat and old age which we were not,we watched him get older ,weaker,losing weight,but still a happy kitty.

Finaly though we knew his time was close as he stopped eating and just slept all the time,there was no pain at the end we just awoke one morning and he was on his favorite blanket and it was over,we had him for Fifteen Years.Our vet kindly is holding him in cold storage until we can have him cremated (alone) and we will put his ashes along side Squeeky who left us in 2004,also very old.

I write this not for sympathy...but to simply say that this is the price one pays for having the love of an animal ,being as responsible towards that animal as one could be financially and morally be...giving love and receiving love and trust in return...but sometimes i selfishly wonder if it's worth the pain i feel at the end.

We have two other cats and God willing will go through this again..we are old two now (sixties) and pray we out last them ,as they are so spoiled we fear no one would take them.

What i ask and wonder about is this..how many of you out there care enough to face this kind of loss over and over again..just to receive the love a pet can give you?
