  • A brief history of time? Or a briefer history of time?

I'm looking to get Stephen Hawking's book as I don't really know as much about physics as I should, and want to learn a bit more. Which copy should I get though? The original 'Brief History of time' or the updated 'Briefer history of time? Any other suggestions for a book on the topic would also be appreciated. Thanks.

  • So what is everyone doing for new years?

Personally, I have lost my ID so I'm getting drunk on my own and plan on watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy! Anyone else in a similar boat, or doing something more exciting? :)

  • How do you cook pork hock?

Any way I'm a student, so I picked up a piece of cheap meat called Pork Hock for around £1.60 a kilogram. Just wondering how should I cook it? Season it a little bit and roast it in the oven, or perhaps chop it up and fry it to reduce the cooking time?

  • What percent in the exam will I need to pass?

Okay, I'm pretty rubbish at maths and haven't done it for many years, not really my kind of subject. Anyhow I'm doing a course in Politics and I just want to know how much I will need to in my exam to pass, it's pretty simple maths but head is all screwed around with my other work so I just want to know if anyone will help me. I gained 61% in the Essay which is worth 40% of the module. The exam is worth 60%, how much percentage will I need in the exam to get an overall of at least 40% in the module? Thanks to anyone that can help me

  • Is Brittany, France's equivalent to Wales?

I have been reading up on Brittany, and it truly fascinates me. They have a distinct national identity, their own Celtic language, as well as different culture to the rest of France. So, is Brittany similar in this regard to Wales? How do the French perceive Brittany to be like? All information and answers will be greatly appreciated.

  • What wine would your recommend?

Well, I am not the most keen on Wine but I drink it occasionally. So far I have only found Chardonnay and Rose as being palatable, although I'll have a glass of anything. Could you recommend any wine for me to try, and I refuse to spend over £10 on a bottle, I would rather buy some Brandy instead..

  • Which is the right choice?

'm in a bit of a tricky situation. I have two options.

I can either go back to Aberystwyth to study International Politics. The course was great, but I just didn't enjoy the place at the time so I took a year out. I haven't applied for a loan yet, nor have accommodation but those things can be dealt with.

Or I can try get an apprenticeship as a highway operative. Basically maintain highways, the money is quite good and after a few years I'll be fully qualified. No guarantee I'll pass the exams or interview but its worth a shot.

I'm thinking, apply for my loan and try sort some accommodation out and at the same time take the test for the apprentice and see if I pass. If I fail I can just go university and if I pass I can make a decision while being sure both options are open.

Your thoughts people....... I need to make a decision soon.

  • Armed confrontation between Russia and China?

Hypothetically, lets say that China invaded a couple of former soviet republics in central asia. And Russia came along in defence of these countries to expel the chinese. Who would win the armed confrontation?

  • Evolution and God, help needed.?

I am looking for a quote by a scientist that said something along the lines that in no way does evolution disprove god and that humans are foolish with their limited understanding and knowledge to discount the existence of a god? It was by a biologist, just can't remember his name or the exact quote.

  • Do I go back to university?

So... I went Aberystwyth last year studying international politics. The course was great and I enjoyed the opening day but things didn't quite go the way I planned. I found it to be quite a dull place, and struggled to make friends which I was used to as I am quite sociable and outgoing.

Anyhow I took a year about to consider my options. I could either try find a job now or go into academia instead and study a course that interest me. After not really being able to find a good apprenticeship or entry level job I have basically wasted a year. But now aber sent me a letter asking If I am coming back? I have until the 19th to decide.

Basically I assume that even though I didn't enjoy it that much it's probably the best option to go back. I avoid increased tuition fees that way, and don't have to suffer waiting for a job that will probably never come along. I could do a postgraduate in teacher training and thus have an employable status, and I have always fancied myself as a teacher haha.

Thing is I haven't applied for a student loan, so It'll be paid late. Also accommodation is such a problem in Aber that I won't be able to find any this late, and i'm unlikely to get a campus room as I count as a second year now.

To make things all the more confusing I received another letter yesterday inviting me for testing and an interview for an apprenticeship as a highway operative. It's on the 21st so I have no way of telling whether I'll get it or not before having to make a choice about uni.

What do you people reckon of my chances, and if I should go back?

  • Do you agree with this statement?

Romantic love is, in scientific terms, the release of hormones which leads us to be attracted and have intense feelings for a partner. This happens when you meet a suitable partner which your body recognise as suitable to mate with. The feelings peek after a year, by which time, naturally you should have conceived a child. After this, the so called love feelings dies, because our instinct presumes the other is unable to have children. Our modern life might not suite the natural way of doing things, but mankind can not undone millions of years of evolution in a single generation. At the end of it we are simply animals.

  • Do you think the Boers could've won the Second Boer War?

Despite lacking a conventional military, the Boers took the British on a run for their money. Do you think that if they hadn't wasted so much time at the sieges at Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberly and instead focused on capturing Durban and Cape Town they could have won the war?

  • Do I go back to university?

    Okay here is my situation.

I went to university last year, studying international politics. I was somewhat depressed and not ready for a commitment in further education so I took a temporary withdrawal. I left the university, because of the location (Aberystwyth, a little welsh town) being far from my hometown, and the lack of any exicetment there. Also I struggled to make meaningful friendships in comparison to home, something I find strange as I have many friends. The course was great though, and it is ranked very highly for it.

My old teachers and peers all believed I made the wrong choice, however I am glad I went with it. I have been trying to find a job during my gap year but it's simply impossible. So I have basically spent a year do nothing. I wanted to get a good entry level job, but none exist where I live, with the exception of the military, something I am not interested in at the moment.

Today I got a letter from my old university asking me if I wish to return. I have until the 19th of August to decide. However I believe I have left it too late for my loan, which will probably be paid late, and I will struggle to find accommodation.

But the question is do I go back? Do I take the risk of not getting accommodation and being given a late loan? Or do I take another year out, risking spending another year wasted and with no job or career prospects, and if nothing happens in my life then going back to another university?

I'm just looking for a little advice, I feel so confused and I hate the fact I can't decide.

  • Quit smoking but want to start again.....?

On Sunday I decided to give up smoking. I started around a year ago, and have been social smoking for a bit longer than that. Since Sunday I haven't had a cigarette. I know I am capable of going without a smoke for quite few days as I have done if before when I have been sick and what not. I quit mainly so I could help improve my fitness and lung capacity. However I really enjoy a cigarette occasionally, especially with a drink. I just feel like I don't really want to quit smoking at this time, although obviously it's not a habit I want for life. Any thoughts?

  • Police officers, have you ever encountered....?

A family or person that has called you over supernatural matters like a haunting or such? Not that I am much of a believer but for example thinking they had a burglar and no evidence? Or have you yourself every came across something unexplainable?

  • Why did yahoo answers just delete my question?

Quite annoyed. Wrote a well written, well planned out rant against all the terrible questions people on here ask and all the silly answers, get around 8 responses in under 10mins all agreeing with me including one star on the question, and then they go ahead and delete it! What is wrong with them?
