  • What to do if grandfather dies during my last two weeks of employment?

I'm halfway through my last two weeks of employment, of which i provided two weeks notice. Yesterday my grandfather was rushed to the hospital and the family has been advised to start planning for his death. I guess the two parter to this is A. seeing him one last time alive, and B. the funeral. Fortunately his wife is in pretty good health so I don't foresee taking care of the property as something I'll need to be around for.

My current company pays me all the unused Paid Time Off (PTO) if I provide 2 weeks notice, and I assume fulfill that commitment. This check is over a months pay for me, as I have never taken a vacation here, and will really help with my student loans. Also, I've got a lot I'd like to get done this last week for the good recommendation.

So, based on general office experience and HR experience, what is acceptable for me to do in this situation?

  • What is this pile of soil like substance?

I've got a pile of soil like substance that has appeared since March in the corner of our patio. The patio is has a border of "planters" around it, that have become VERY overgrown (HOA was supposed to replace fence and remove planters.. still haven't and I'm tired of by "backyard" looking like a jungle).

Well, once we removed some weeds we found a pile of soil like substance (2 X 2 X 2 mound) in the corner of the planters. Anyone know what this is? Some planters are growing moss, so I'm assuming they're pretty rotten. Also I've seen mice, a rat, and chipmunks on the patio, another reason I'm cleaning it all up.

I'm just worried about moving it if i can't breath it in. Also, would like to let the landlord know if this is pest related.

    Thanks in advance!

  • should I go to the ER or get an appointment monday?

I hurt my foot pretty bad last night. It is swollen, has some red markings and is throbbing. I have taken 800 mg of Advil. I have it elevated and ice on it. I cant put too much weight on it.

I know ER costs are high, so I'm thinking about continuing this treatment for the day, if it doesn't get better I'll get an appointment. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Did I make the right decision?

My girlfriend and I (both 24) of 4.5 years just got back from an amazing vacation in Ireland. Just following it, I was so excited about our relationship, for the first time I considered proposing. Just one problem:

About a year ago, we split up for less than a month. The reason we split was because she had been in relationships for most of 6 years (I too have been very much so the same) and she "needed to make sure she could live being single" and having to know she loves herself first. Over the last year this has come up, not her saying she wanted to be single, but that because I came back to her so quickly she never was actually able to live as a single person.

Last week I brought this up to her, and asked if it was still something she felt she needed (took some "guts" but since I'm thinking about proposing, I wanted to make sure she wouldn't have any regrets in the future that could jeopardize our relationship). Well after emails and a dinner we decided to meet up. This issue wasn't the one she wanted to address, rather poor communication, etc. but I felt I needed to know if she was one day going to regret never being single. She had no answer to the big question and said she couldn't decide. I said if she can't say she doesn't need to be single, than it's something that will always bother her, so we should break up... and we did.

Now I'm wondering if I'm an idiot for throwing away an amazing relationship, at what I felt was the best time in it.

So, did I make the right decision? Thanks everyone.

  • Did perpetual happiness in the Garden of Eden maybe get so boring that the eating of the apple was justified?

I enjoy the quote, and would love some religious views on it.

By the way, the quote is by Chuck Palahniuk.

  • How do I move from Verizon to AT&T for iPhone?

I am planning on leaving Verizon (before end of contract) and moving to AT&T to get the iPhone, and a better plan for my needs. I'd like to reserve an iPhone, but really, I have no clue on how to reserve a phone to pick up at the Apple store, and to transfer a number. I'd assume it's easier to do at an AT&T store, however, I dont think I'd be able to switch as quickly.

Do you know what I should do to make the switch? Thanks in advance.
