I am an Atheist. My atheism does not define me. I define my atheism. I am a writer. I recently published a little book entitled: 1 Atheist 1 Voice (available at amazon.com and target.com). I am nearly finished with my second book: Lazy Parenting: What it is and How to Avoid It. I am the mother of two of the most amazing adults on the planet. Being a mother has been the most wonderful experience of my life! I love to think. I love thought-provoking ideas. I love to learn. I love to grow. Disclaimer: I reserve the right to be human and err. Nothing here was written to intentionally misinform or otherwise mislead.

  • What do you think should happen to these parents?

It was reported this morning by the Associated Press that police are investigating the death of an 11-year-old girl who died from an undiagnosed, treatable form of diabetes whose parents chose to pray for her rather than take her to a doctor.

I realize I do not have all the information here, but just based on this bit of information, do you think the parents should face any consequences? If so, what should they be?

  • Have any of you geard of Z-Day? What do you think about it?

Although I think this movie is a bit fantastical in parts, I do like the underlying information that is presented, especially the part about the Jesus myth. I think I may host a Z-Day showing. Follow the link if you want to know what I am talking about.

  • Do you seriously think you could pick an Atheist out of a crowd?

Most people I know are surprised to learn that I am an Atheist. In fact, they usually think that I am "very" Christian (as they put it) because of how I live my life. Seriously, do you think you could pick an Atheist out of a crowd, if you could talk to them without bringing up religion or God, etc.?

  • Why are X-rated movies wrong?

With Christ in them, you'd think they'd be okay. ;)

  • Do you think Atheists will get an apology?

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/church_shooting...

After this story first came out, there were a couple of self-proclaimed Christians who posted here exclaming that this had to be an Atheist. Those expressions were followed by some horrific insults toward Atheists. I couldn't believe some of the anwers given.

So, now that the truth is known, I wonder if any of those zealots will come back and apologize to Atheists for the things they said.

  • Do you believe in time travel?

I just posted an answer. After I did it said

"-375 second ago" After I hit refresh it said "-320 seconds ago.

That is so weird. It's now at -209.

  • Why do cats lick each other so much?

I have 14 cats. All of them are rescue cats. It's funny to see a group lick going on.

Anyway, what is the explanation for why cats groom one another?

  • Why are people posting poetry in the Philosophy category with increasing regularity?

I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that there are more questions that amount to someone asking for feedback on a poem or song they have written. I am curious as to why this is going on.

I know I have posted questions in this category that do not seem related, but I typically have my reasons for doing so.

So, what is the reasoning behind the poetry feedback questions?

  • Do you believe God answers your prayers?

If you do, has he answered every single one your prayers? If not, how does he decide which ones to answer and which ones not to? And, how can you be certain that the thing you prayed for wouldn't have happened anyway without your prayer?

  • How do you arrive at equating original sin to sex?

In Genesis, after God created Adam and Eve, he told them to reproduce. God told them to multiple before he told them not to eat of tree. What they did was eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Thereby, they knew the difference. I do not get how in the world you arrive at the idea that sex is original sin. Could you please explain how this idea of original sin came to be?

27 So God created man in his own image,

    in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

  • Pros of different types of thinking...?

    Critical thinking vs Creative thinking

What prompted this question is a conversation I had with my son yesterday. I told him I thought he was more of a logical thinker than his sister. So, jokingly, he asked me if I was saying he was a better thinker. I told him that if we were to break thinking down, I would say that his sister is more of creative thinker than he is. So, he is better at thinking logically and she is better at thinking creatively.

Obviously, both have their places. I do not necessarily think one is better or more important than the other. My question is,

In what ways do you think each of these modes of thinking "enhance" or contibute to life and/or society?

  • When you lay in bed at night, can you hear the silence?

When all the lights are off, and there is nothing on in your house like aTV or a radio, and there are no apparent noises from outside (like crickets, etc.), do you hear "something?" If so, to what do you attribute this?

  • Do you use the age of a person to determine the value of his/her opinions? Why?

I have read some answers here in which people made light of a person's Q or A because of their age. (I am not assuming that. That is what was said.) So, it made me wonder.

Please expand on the following in addition to answering the questions above, if you care to. Thanks in advance.

If we hold true that our experiences play a role in our view of reality, how can we rule out the possibility that someone with less experience than us holds a view of reality that is any less valid than our own?

When it comes down to it, the closer you are to examining something objectively, the closer you are to what is universally true. So, acquired experiences, being subjective as they are, don't necessarily make you wiser, so much as, they give you more knowledge from which to extrapolate. What you do with that knowledge is at the heart of wisdom. It might even be argued that lack of experience allows you to be more objective.

Side note: In my own experience, younger people seem to be much more open to possibility.

  • Have you ever wondered if an answer you gave on Y!A was later plagiarized?

I have read some brilliant answers on Y!A. It made me wonder if any askers here have taken any of the answers and used them to their own end (as a basis for a thesis, for example) without crediting the answerer.

Then, naturally, because this is how my mind works, I wondered how much of what people post as answers was plagiarized by them.

(Then people are plagiarizing plagiarized material.) Please make my mind stop! :)

I am putting this in Philo because that is where I see the most brilliant answers. :)

  • Why do some of the simplest things...?

Why do some of the simplest things need the most words to explain them? I really want to know. :) What do you think?

Sorry, I just saw a question on Y!A that was soooooooo long and at the end the asker stated "It's that simple!"
