Always Question
I am a history teacher with a specific interest in theology and religious history. I believe in always questioning your ideas/beliefs. I question my own constantly, and if you truly believe in yours, so will you. Otherwise, you become stagnant and useless.
What movie is this!!!!?
It's an indie film I think, saw it on TV a few years back. It's probably from around 2010 or so. It's about two brothers, one of whom is a screw up, the younger who has some talent. The younger one gets into a bar fight and kills a man, but the older one takes the fall and goes to jail. The younger one becomes a country music star and an alcoholic in the intervening years, but must go home when their father is dying. I can't remember anyone in it. Any ideas??
1 AnswerMovies7 years agoWhich school should I go to for my Masters?
I am thinking about going to one of these three schools overseas: University College in Dublin Ireland, Queen Mary University in London England, or University of Glasgow in Scotland. Does anyone have any idea/knowledge about these schools? Right now Scotland enjoys a slight advantage as I have some (very) distant relatives there (my great-grandmother immigrated from Scotland in 1920, and her brothers/sisters did not, so I have some distant cousins). Thanks for anything you got!
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)8 years agoTeachers: Why is it? And, how annoying do you find it?
As a teacher, I've noticed that students will go through just about ANYTHING to avoid answering a question, but if you tell them to be quiet (say during an exam) they HAVE to whisper?

1 AnswerOther - Entertainment8 years agoCan I get some computer help please?
My computer has been acting really weird lately. Sometimes when I turn it on, it'll do one of two things. It'll either A) just be completely blank, not even show the HP logo like it does before Windows 7 boots up, or B) It'll say that no bootable device was found. After I turn it on and off a few times it'll work, but I think it's a problem I should probably ask about. Any ideas?
1 AnswerSoftware10 years agoHelp with a movie argument!!!! Waterworld?
In the movie "Waterworld", when Dennis Hopper was checking the oil in his tanker, he spit into it when the guy told him how much was left. Now, here's the argument. My father says that Hopper spit into the guys mouth. I think Hopper hit the guy in the forehead, and my brother thinks Hopper missed the guy completely. Do any of you guys/girls know??
1 AnswerMovies1 decade agoWhy do people believe that marriage is this sacred thing?
I mean, throughout most of human history, marriage was based on mutual benefit. Marrying for love was basically unheard of, and most marriages were arranged. It was, literally, a business transaction, usually meant to foster strong ties between families. Half of marriages now end in divorce, and for some reason a lot of people object to same-sex marriages because it will "destroy the sacred institution of man and woman marriage", even though that "sacred institution" was, until very recently, NOT sacred.
7 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoTheory about statements?
My brother and I are having an argument. He states that a statement can NEVER be a theory, whereas I say that a statement can SOMETIMES be a theory. First, some dictionary definitions
Statement: something stated. the act or manner of stating something.
Theory: a coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena: Einstein's theory of relativity.
For instance, lets use Einsteins Theory of Relativity. When Einstein first said (or wrote) "The Theory of Relativity" he was making a statement that was ALSO a theory (as far as I can see, and I may be wrong). My brother argues that he was making a statement ABOUT a theory, but they can never be the same thing. Your thoughts?
2 AnswersWords & Wordplay1 decade agoShould TV News Stations (Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc...) declare their bias?
I'm not picking on any one station in particular. I am voting Obama, but I watch them all, including Republican biased Fox and Democrat biased MSNBC. My real question is this: Should these stations stop pretending that they are "balanced and fair" and just tell people, "Hey, we support this guy". I mean, as long as they don't outright LIE about the other candidate, wouldnt' it be refreshing if they just declared their obvious biases?

5 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoDo you think God wants us to worship him/her/they blindly as long as we worship, or.....?
is it just as likely that he/she/they put us here to see what we would do, and that if we use our reasoning and intellect and decide NOT to worship, is that pleasing to God as well?
Let's ignore the philosophical opinions on whether or not we have "free will" (as there are many and I encourage you to look at them) and lets just say, for this question, that we do. That we can determine what/when/where/how we do/do not do something. Agreed? Good. Ok.
So we have free will. YAY!!!. Now what? Well, lets say that we spend a lifetime studying the different religions of the world. Buddhism, Hinduism, the Abrahmic beliefs (Islam, Christianity, Judaism) etc... Now, if we decide to not follow any of them, that none of them are the "correct" religion or belief, and simply lead good lives, basically trying to leave the world a slightly better place now than it was when we first came in, do you think that God would look at that an say "he/she tried, they did their best, so what if they didn't
14 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians, please answer this....?
I've seen a lot of answers on here (and even a question or two) on why people (fair warning, I am an AGNOSTIC, NOT a Christian) should hate Muslims or homosexuals or w/e. Well, here's my question. If Jesus preached love and forgivness, and the history of Christianity is one of violence and degradation, where do you get off on judging someone elses religion/beliefs/actions? I'm NOT saying that you should condone the killing of people because of their religous beliefs, as killing is wrong period, but those are the work of EXTREMISTS in all cases, NOT mainstream relgions. And Christianity can provide us a few examples: Oklahoma City and the Nazi's, just to start out with. How can you sit there and say things like "Why not hate all muslims?" (which was a question i saw on here). Do you understand that you are being BIGOTS when you do such a thing?
23 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoI have to know.....?
Why do Christians (and not JUST Christians, I should really say anyone who believes in some sort of "higher power") think that the existence of God/Whatever needs to be DISproven? I've seen many answers on here to religious questions stating "where is your proof that there is no god" or the like, and i want to slap them. The responsibility of proving whether or not there is a god rests on people who believe that there IS one, not the other way around. An anology: If i'm talking to you on the phone and say that there is a three hundred pound canary in my apartment and come over quick so you can see, and when you get there it is gone, is it YOUR job to prove it was never there? or is it MY job to prove it was?. It is a simple philosophical fact that the burden of proof lies with the person claiming something exists, as you CAN NOT PROVE THAT SOMETHING DOES NOT EXIST. What are your thoughts?

20 AnswersFootball (American)1 decade agoWhat is the name of this short story? and who wrote it?
Hey, I read this short story years and years ago, and i can't for the life of me remember what it's called or who wrote it. It's about this society that wants to make everyone equal, so it forces them to wear weights etc, and cover their faces, until everyone moves and looks alike. These two people, a man and a woman, are so far above anyone else that they are forced to wear the most weights etc...but they decide at the end of the story to shake off the weights and show everyone how to be free, and they are killed for it. I know that seems like not a lot of info, but that's all i can remember. Does ANYONE know what this story is?
