  • In the state of New York, what is the age of compulsory education for a student with a 504 plan?

I am trying to advocate for someone who is already 16 but has a 504 plan due to a disability. Is the age of compulsory education still 16, or does this person have longer? Thank you!

  • How long can Gilfeather turnips stay in ground?

We have a crop of Gilfeather turnips that appear ready. They are about 90 days from seed. But we are in a bit of a heatwave...can I leave them in another month or so until it is cooler or will they get woody? Or eaten by critters/insects? Although called a turnip, this variety is closer to a rutabaga. I am in ag. zone 5 but not far from zone 4. The first killing frost is usually in the first two weeks of October. I do not have a root celler set up so I am worried about pulling them now.

  • Need trailer hitch ball size for circa 1980 Magic Tilt Boat Trailer?

I have been neglecting my sailboat for too long--partly because I didn't have a truck anymore. Now I have a truck; it's rigged for a hitch, but the garage needs to know what size ball to put on it. I can't find the size for the ball on the trailer itself and I don't remember from the old truck I had years ago. The trailer is old and had its share of wear and tear. When last used it was in decent condition. It hauls a 16 foot sailboat called a Com-Pac 16, made by Hutchins. So does anyone know whether I am looking at a 1 7/8 inch ball or a 2 inch ball? Looking at it I can't see how it would be over 2 inches. Thanks!

  • How often is it ok to board your dogs?

In the last couple of years, mostly between May and October, I've had to frequently travel on weekends (often work related) and cannot bring my three dogs. So they have been boarded a lot. I almost always board them at their vet's and they seem to do fine. I guess I'm just feeling some guilt or separation anxiety. From May to October it's been an average of two weekends a month, plus about 10 days in July. They really seem happy and well adjusted...maybe I just want to hear that it's ok. Thoughts, comments are most appreciated. Thanks!

  • Planning Trip to Seattle, Suggestions Needed?

My S.O. and I will be in Seattle in July for the AFT Convention. I've never been that far west and have never seen the Pacific Ocean (or any tributaries that feed into it.) I'm adding a few days at either end of the trip to explore Seattle and beyond. We are looking for suggestions for places within an hour or two for: fishing, hiking, and camping. If you have suggestions for fresh or saltwater fishing spots (we will get appropriate licences) a favorite state park or campground, trails and other wildlife areas, I would be most grateful. In addition, I enjoy flameworking (beginning glass artist) and we both have Native roots, so we really would love cultural sites and locations that pertain to Native American history and culture. I'm hoping folks who live in/around Seattle or who have been there before will give us suggestions! Hole-in-the wall places to eat with good, cheap, local or unique food are great, too!

Many thanks to all who contribute!

  • Help! Inundated with yellow summer squash & question re: dehydrators?

Ok, so I should have gotten a booth at my local farmer's market....I am inundated with yellow summer squash. I've been giving it to friends and neighbors; the next step is my local food pantry. But it keeps coming. There are two things I need to know about dealing with all this squash:

    1. What's the best (but also affordable) dehydrator, who sells it, and why do you recommend it? What do I look for in it? Are they all made from plastic, and should I be concerned about this?

    2. I need pickle recipes that work well with summer squash....lots and lots of recipes. If not pickle recipes, anything that can be done in a water bath canner....let's see---is there such a thing as yellow squash mince meat?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

If any of you who reply live within 20 miles of zipcodes 12866 or 12072, I can repay your kindness in squash if you like.....

  • I need recommendations for a NYS / Encon or private campground (tent site) in the Catskills.?

Ideally the campground has swimming, hiking trails to scenic overlooks or waterfalls, a good view of other mountains in the Catskill range, and enough woods that even if it's not too far from the thruway, the drum of traffic is not too audible.

The person I'm going camping with loved the book "My Side of the Mountain" as a kid, and has never been to the Catskills.

    Thank you for your suggestions!

  • Need advice about finding the perfect car!?

I'm looking for another car & I'd love input. Here is what I'm looking for in a car; am eager to hear what you recommend & why.

Open re: body style--wagon, van, smaller SUVs, sedan, truck, etc. No disgustingly huge SUVs, please. Doesn't have to be new--models up to 10-12 years old may be recommended; prefer years 2002 to 2007.

MPG--must get NO LESS THAN 20 city and 25 highway, the more the better (engine can be gas, diesel, hybrid--all ok)

Must be fun to drive & handle well, esp. in winter up north

    Prefer 4 x 4 or AWD

Must be well made, reliable, and safe; prefer comfy ride, roomy interior

Needs to carry UP TO 4-5 adults & 2 Lab sized dogs comfortably--or fewer adults but good for hauling camping gear & kayak, getting kids back to college, etc. I put on 20,000 + mi./yr --this includes a 150 highway miles/week commute to work .

Needs to tow 16 ' sailboat; rear wheels need to go into the water to a depth up to 10"

    Am grateful for input, thanks!

  • I need advice on travelling alone, by minivan, with two dogs--from NY to ME.?

I'm trying to salvage a last week of vacation before I go back to work. I am staying at our summer place once we get to Maine; I'd really like to have the dogs with me, but only if we can travel safely without risk to their health from the summer's heat.

My concern is how to safely make quick pit stops so I can go to the bathroom (trip is 525 miles, can't exactly hold it!) without

jeopardizing the health of my dogs (summer heat isn't over yet, in fact, there are advisories for today.)

Should I wait until evening, and travel at night? (This is my instinct--either this or I board them with the vet, but I really want them with me.)

Is it ok to leave them in the car with the a/c running for 5 minutes? Or tie them (obviously away from traffic) outside the minivan briefly? Has anyone ever brought their dog(s) on leash into a highway rest area bathroom? (And how quickly did you get kicked out?) I bring plenty of water--and a cooler full of ice. Thanks!

  • Is it too late to start tomatoes indoors?

According to my zipcode, 12866, my hardiness zone is 4, with a last frost date of May 7. First frost is given at September 28, I think, but my experience shows the first killing frost is around October 6th; with row covers I can get an extra week or two.

I also plan to plant a garden on some farm land I own about an hour away, zipcode 12072, which is categorized as zone 5. I would like to start some more tomato seeds indoors, but worry that it may be too late. Should I look at the days to maturity on the packages? (I assume if it says 70 days, they mean 70 days from when the plant is transplanted outside.)

Please advise! Thank you very much!

  • Christmas Blues....am I being unreasonable?

As a Christian, I know today (Christmas) is not about materialism. Part of me is thinking about those who are cold, hungry, lonely, sick, and/or suffering, which makes what I'm upset about look pretty lame.

Here goes: As I was hanging stockings, my husband told me that he didn't "have anything for yours" which he then qualified by saying that he had something (implying one thing) but couldn't find it. I was really bummed; tried not to show it. Over the years (married almost 24 years) I've gotten in the habit of putting some of the candy I put in others' stockings in my own, & I slipped a few little treats in there. Usually I start filling the stockings & then he adds to them. Maybe I've been enabling him by slipping in a few treats for me, so it doesn't matter if he only adds a few things? Or he thinks since the kids are older it doesn't matter much? I'm upset w/me for being upset, if that makes sense. I know it's NOT about getting; it's about Jesus, so I shouldn't be hurt.

  • My dog, part coonhound, is an avid squirrel hunter. Is it ok to let him have what he catches?

He is up to date on his shots, including rabies vaccination. I have not taught him to tree and hunt squirrels. I don't hunt, or I would take him with me.
