My dog, part coonhound, is an avid squirrel hunter. Is it ok to let him have what he catches?

He is up to date on his shots, including rabies vaccination. I have not taught him to tree and hunt squirrels. I don't hunt, or I would take him with me.

Well,duh...what do you think dogs ate before they found gullible humans to feed em???

    Sure,why not???

DON'T forget to LESSEN the amount you feed it or it'll get ***FAT***!!!

But...why waste a good squirrel on a DOG??? They make good eatin'!!!

Do ***NOT*** listen to the "horror stories" from the AR/humaniac/peta-NUTZ who've answered above, btw!!! They're OBVIOUSLY *IDIOTS* that don't know SQUAT about DOGS *OR* squirrels!!

    No, don't do it, because:

    1) He will develop digestive problems.

    2) He might choke on the bones.

    3) It is an innocent squirrel that should not suffer because your dog will not behave.

    4) Your dog might move on to bigger "game" such as cats and small dogs.

that depends. I wish you have put a lil more details in there. If you are training a hunting dog, NO. NEVER let them have their own game. If it is a pet, it won't hurt the dog. But you will never be able to train it right later on. That's kinda what "first blood" means. Once he gets a piece of it he will not let you have the game, whatever it is.

No, squirrels carry a number of diseases, not to mention fleas and mites, which will transfer to your dog.He may also choke on small animal bones. If you want to keep your dog healthy don't let him carry around or eat any wild animal.

It may cause some digestive problems and probably will cause worms. There may be some other diseases he could catch from them and some of them may be zoonotic meaning you might catch them as well.

try to make him eat less every time he catches something and then when you don't let him eat anymore he might stop eating but i don't know if it would work so I'm not gareenting it, just and idea

i don't think so..i think you should train him not to catch squirrels... poor squirrels. but you don't know what that squirrel has.

  • 1 decade ago

no. if you let him get his way then the time you really need him to listen he will think that it is okay because you let him the first time.

I don't think so. I don't know though, ask those who are an expert in this. Sorry.

I wouldn't let him, he might choke or something. Just to be safe.
