Need trailer hitch ball size for circa 1980 Magic Tilt Boat Trailer?
I have been neglecting my sailboat for too long--partly because I didn't have a truck anymore. Now I have a truck; it's rigged for a hitch, but the garage needs to know what size ball to put on it. I can't find the size for the ball on the trailer itself and I don't remember from the old truck I had years ago. The trailer is old and had its share of wear and tear. When last used it was in decent condition. It hauls a 16 foot sailboat called a Com-Pac 16, made by Hutchins. So does anyone know whether I am looking at a 1 7/8 inch ball or a 2 inch ball? Looking at it I can't see how it would be over 2 inches. Thanks!

Magic tilt built trailers with both 1 7/8 and 2" balls. The correct size is marked on the hitch where it attaches to the frame. It should be readable even if rusted. A 2" ball will not go in to the 1 7/8 hitch but a 1 7/8 will go into a "2" hitch. So try a 2 inch ball and exchange it if it's to big.

I agree in most part with Richard C.. I am not aware of what Magic Co used as a ball size. I do agree that it wouldn't be larger than 2" for that size boat. Definitely start with the larger 2" ball first. Wal-Mart has them and you could get both the 2" and the 1 7/8" balls at the same time. Try the larger one first, lock it in place and make sure it can't come out of the socket. If it fits, keep it and return the smaller ball. This is an easy job.

Take a tape measure and measure the outside of the hitch. I would say 2" go and get 1 if fits your in if not take it back.
