  • In the Big Bang Theory, what are the social norms Sheldon learned from his mother?

    For example, Mary taught Sheldon to offer a hot beverage to friends when they are upset. What are all the other little nifty hard and fast social tips she taught him? I remember there being others.

  • Explain a Strange Episode?

    I just had a strange episode of something. I have no idea what it was but it seemed to last a few minutes. Extreme abdominal pain woke me up and I went to the bathroom. While on the toilet, I became shaky, weak, nauseous (even retched a few times), sweated like crazy, and started breathing really heavy. I did a number two and waited this out on the bathroom floor. I felt absolutely awful and I wanted to get my phone to call 911 or someone to take me to the ER but I had no energy to do anything but lay there. After what seemed to be about 10 minutes, I was back to normal. What the heck was this and how do I prevent it in the future?

  • What kind of tent to buy?

    I've never been camping before and I'm looking at doing an archaeological field school in Chadron, Nebraska this summer from June 1-July 2, 2011. Weight's not really an issue seeing as how we're staying in the same campgrounds for the duration. All I need is a tent for myself. I'm looking for something around $100 or less. No fiberglass apparently.

    The course syllabus says, "The camping equipment you will need depends on how you like to camp. Minimally, you should have a tent or other shelter, a sleeping bag, etc. Nights will likely be cool but not cold. Wind and rain can arrive rapidly and at any time, so bring rain gear and be sure you know how to anchor your tent. Low profile tents are the best choice. We really, really mean this: storms can come in very hard and we have had wind that snapped fiberglass tent poles. Last year, we all watched a really cool storm that left some rain on us but piled up a couple of inches of hail in the streets of Chadron, about five miles away from us. We can always find shelter in Chadron State Park buildings if something like that hits the park instead of the town, although we have never had to."

    So...what kind of tent should I buy?

  • Pain and spasms not decreasing in broken leg after 6 weeks?

    I fell 6 weeks ago, went to the hospital and was told there was no break. I walked on it for a week, nothing got better so I went to my GP when they did find a tibial plateau fracture that I believe was incomplete 5 weeks ago. The pain and spasms have their ups and downs, but overall it is not getting any better. I'm doing everything the doctor told me to including RICE and not bearing weight. I'm still taking painkillers all day long and it's barely taking the edge off. I already have an appointment set up with the doctor for next week, but I'm just looking for information. Is this normal? I've had other msk injuries like sprains and strains. They hurt, but they would get better even if it was very slow. I was also given a splint and told to take it off and move my knee 3-4 times a day, which I have been doing. in addition, I have a large (half a golf ball sized) large lump over the break which hurts and is also not changing.

    I've had msk injuries before, but I've never had a fracture before. I just want to know if this is normal and if not, what could possibly be wrong and what I can do to help until I see the doctor next week.

  • What to do if in a wheelchair during a fire alarm?

    So I'm in a wheelchair with a broken leg on the third floor of my apartment complex. The elevators are turned off when the fire alarm goes off. So what am I supposed to do if the fire alarm goes off?

    (If there's a real fire I can suck up the pain and get myself out. However, there usually is no fire. The alarm goes off several times a year due to burnt dinners since I am in university student housing. I am not going to risk further injury or setting back my healing and a ton of pain for someone's inept cooking.)

  • Should I have a cast?

    I broke my leg about 5 weeks ago now, and I've been thinking about the fact that I don't have a cast. The orthopedic surgeon said that I didn't need one. I really didn't want one so I didn't ask why in case he might change his mind. I didn't think about it much either because I got what I wanted and stayed in a removable immobilizer. So my question is: why don't I have a cast and should I have one? Also, was this the wrong call for the doctor to make? If it is, should I go back in an have one put on or not?

    Info: incomplete non-displaced and non-depressed tibial plateau fracture on 9/3/10. I also had a hematoma the size of a softball over the break that went away after 2 weeks. In addition, I bruised a nerve and have numbness over the break. The OS said that feeling should come back in about 6 months. I am a 20 yr old female in Colorado. I am 5'9" and 150 lbs. This is my first break. I have never had any other fractures or any previous injuries to my knee area. Here's an x-ray: http://goo.gl/f0DN

  • Help with mental preparation for going to school in a wheelchair?

    I broke my leg about a month ago. I was put on crutches and was told to be non weight bearing. The problem is, I don't have enough upper body strength to haul myself around my university all day, so I cheat and bear partial weight. Low and behold, the break is not healing. So I got put in a wheelchair.

    I'm apprehensive about going to classes tomorrow with it. I feel like it shouts that I'm a weakling, unable to use crutches. I'm afraid that people will blame me for making them late to class since I'm going to have to be loaded and unloaded on a bus. I'm afraid that people will stare and give me judging looks. The more I think about it, the more I want to stay home and crawl into bed. I could just use some comfort.

  • What to ask and expect from doctor about broken knee?

    I took a fall about a week and a half ago. They originally thought at the hospital it was just bruised, but found out from my PCP Friday that I have a tibial plateau fracture. I have an appointment with the orthopedic tomorrow.

    I was wondering what I can expect at my visit? Further imaging, a cast, surgery, needles...what?

    I was also wondering what I should ask. I plan on asking about pain management, mobility, a note for work, a numb spot that I have at the injury site, expected timeline, and whatever else comes to mind based upon what the doc tells me. Anything else that I should ask?

    This is my first time with a broken bone, so I'm completely new to this. Help and insight and other experiences with this type of fracture would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

  • What strength oboe reed should I buy?

    I'm a clarinet player and recently switched to oboe. I have a Jones oboe reed (with red string) that is the perfect strength, the problem is that I don't know what strength it is! This reed I got from my friend's little sister. She doesn't remember, but she thinks that it is medium-hard (she's 12, and oboe is her first instrument that she's only been playing for 2 years). That seems a little strong to me.

    I need backup reeds, but don't know what strength to get. My clarinet reed strength is Mitchell Lurie 3 or Vandoren 2 to 2.5, if clarinet and oboe reed strengths are comparable at all. What strength should I buy? Even a range would be helpful.

    Many thanks.

  • Name of a romantic British movie?

    I'm trying to find a movie that I watched several years ago on TV with my mother. It was a romance, set in England. The girl is American (I think) and studying music at one of the top schools in England. Her guy and her are in a taxi cab when they get hit and she dies. The day restarts, and he gives her the best day of her life. This includes showing her around where he grew up in England, getting her flowers, making her music group at the college play her song, and taking her on the Y2k Ferris wheel thing. They get in a taxi cab again, but he makes it so that he's the one who dies, not her.

    I'd really like to see this movie again. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

  • Help with while loop in magic eight ball c program?

    Assignment (Part C): http://ece.colorado.edu/~ecen1030/assignments/hmk9...

    I have the magic eight ball part down just great. Could you please help me with the first while loop? I need to "wait until the user is ready before printing an answer" and "ask if the user wants to try again". The program works the first time around, waiting and then asking. However, subsequent times, it does not wait and the ask does not work.

    Code:

    #include <stdio.h>

    #include <time.h>

    #define RANGE 20

    main(){

    int numbers[RANGE];

    int c, response;

    int repeat;

    repeat=1;

    while(repeat=1){

    puts("Magic Eight Ball");

    srandom((unsigned)time(NULL));

    for(c=0;c<RANGE;c++)

    numbers[c]=0;

    printf("Press enter to get a response.\n");

    getchar();

    for(c=0;c<1;c++){

    do{

    response=random()%RANGE;

    }while(numbers[response]);

    if(response == 0)

    printf("As I see it, yes");

    else if(response==1)

    printf("Ask again later");

    else if(response==2)

    printf("Better not tell you now");

    else if(response==3)

    printf("Cannot predict now");

    else if(response==4)

    printf("Concentrate and ask again");

    else if(response==5)

    printf("Don’t count on it");

    else if(response==6)

    printf("It is certain");

    else if(response==7)

    printf("It is decidedly so");

    else if(response==8)

    printf("Most likely");

    else if(response==9)

    printf("My reply is no");

    else if(response==10)

    printf("My sources say no");

    else if(response==11)

    printf("Outlook good");

    else if(response==12)

    printf("Outlook not so good");

    else if(response==13)

    printf("Reply hazy, try again");

    else if(response==14)

    printf("Signs point to yes");

    else if(response==15)

    printf("Very doubtful");

    else if(response==16)

    printf("Without a doubt");

    else if(response==17)

    printf("Yes");

    else if(response==18)

    printf("Yes - definitely");

    else

    printf("You may rely on it");

    }

    printf("\n");

    printf("Would you like to ask another question (0/1)? \n");

    scanf("%d",&repeat);

    }

    return 0;

    }

  • Magic Eight Ball C Program?

    Write a C program named eightball.c that creates a computer version of the Magic 8 Ball toy.

    When writing this program, use the srandom((unsigned) time(NULL)) and random() functions to get a random number. You will need to have a #include <time.h> in your program to be able to call the time() function. In my version of this program, I asked for a date of birth and added that to the what time() returns to create an even more random seed.

    The Magic 8 Ball returns one of 20 different responses. So, using random() find a way to create a value between 0 and 19. That value can index into a string array to return one of the 20 answers

    from the Magic 8 Ball.

    The following lists the 20 standard answers.

    char *reply[] = {

    "As I see it, yes",

    "Ask again later",

    "Better not tell you now",

    "Cannot predict now",

    "Concentrate and ask again",

    "Don’t count on it",

    "It is certain",

    "It is decidedly so",

    "Most likely",

    "My reply is no",

    "My sources say no",

    "Outlook good",

    "Outlook not so good",

    "Reply hazy, try again",

    "Signs point to yes",

    "Very doubtful",

    "Without a doubt",

    "Yes",

    "Yes - definitely",

    "You may rely on it "

    };

    The list above is in a form that defines an array of strings named reply. The file reply.txt contains this text. Your program should wait until the user is ready before printing an answer. The program should then ask if the user wants to try again. When writing this program, think about how you might use the do-while loop to repeatedly give an answer.

  • Character Frequency C Program?

    Write a C program named charfreq.c that reads a text file, character by character, and counts the number of times a character is seen in the file. Since the text you will be reading uses ASCII character codes, you may assume that, at most, you will only see 128 different characters. Check for, and ignore any character that has a value greater than 127. You may also use the function tolower() to covert any uppercase characters to lower case. This requires that you have a #include <ctype.h> at the beginning of you program (after #include <stdio.h>).

    After processing the textfile, your program should print a summary that has the hex value of a character, the decimal value of a character, the character, the number of times the character used, and finally the fraction of times (the probability that) the character was used.
