  • What happens when an MRI has different results than x-rays?

I fell in November and after almost a week of shoulder pain, I was able to see my primary doctor. She had me go for an x-ray, and the radiology report said I have a separated shoulder. I was sent to an orthopedist who did his own x-ray in the office. He also agreed that I have a separated shoulder. After a few weeks of physical therapy, I was still having some pain during certain movements so he gave me a cortisone shot and sent me for an MRI to check for tears in the rotator cuff as well. I just got the report and while there is no damage to the rotator cuff, it states that there is no evidence of shoulder joint dislocation. The separation wasn t mentioned and I know the shoulder wasn t dislocated. Could the way I was laying during the MRI show things differently than when I was standing up for the x-rays? Which is better to believe? I have a follow up on the 10th so we ll see what the doctor says but I was curious for others opinions.

  • Exercising and muscle pain?

I joined a gym and have gone two times so far. I did the elliptical machine for 15 minutes, the bike for 15 minutes and an arm machine for 15 minutes on the first day. The second day, I did the elliptical machine for 10 minutes and weight machines for my legs - 2 sets of 10 and 30 pounds on each machine. I felt that my muscles were being worked while I was doing the exercises but I haven't felt any soreness once I left the gym. Does this mean I am not doing enough to build muscle? Should I increase the weights or the reps? I'm not sure if this is right but I thought if there was soreness, the muscles were getting "damaged" and would build up stronger as they heal.

  • Help with a new puppy?

My family just got an Australian Shepherd/Boxer mix puppy on Tuesday from North Shore Animal League. She was rescued from a pet store in Vermont that would have put her to sleep since she was ill with parvo virus, conjunctivitis, kennel cough and carpal laxity. She was 2 months old when she was rescued, got the medical attention she needed and is now 3 months old and resolved of everything except for the carpal laxity. She is getting stronger every day though. The first day we got her, she was very calm and adjusting to her new surroundings. Now that she's used to everything, she quite a bit more active but she's nipping a lot, especially at the kids. We've tried yelping, saying no, distracting her with a Nylabone, putting our finger under her tongue and putting some pressure on her jaw, squirting water from a water bottle to distract her (something we learned with our other dog when she was in puppy school almost 10 years ago), and walking away. Tonight, though, when she started nipping my ankles, I made the high pitched yelp sound, ignored her and walked away to do something else but she growled at me, grabbed my ankle with both paws and bit down. She was a fast learner when my husband and I taught her her name, sit, down and come but she will not learn to stop biting. It seems like she's not bad during the day but acts up a little more when the kids get home from school (they're 12 and 5) and in the evening. But once she gets that out of her system, she's fine again and will sit in my lap like nothing happened. I play with her a lot during the day but also put her in her crate to rest her legs along with a Nylabone since she's definitely still teething. I can't walk her outside yet since she doesn't have all her shots yet but I'm sure that would burn some of that energy she has once she can. I'm also going to enroll her in puppy school once she's had all her shots and has the okay from the vet because even though the parvo virus is resolved in her, she's not allowed to be around other puppies for 2 months. Please help, I need tips to get her to stop biting!

  • What to wear with bright blue pants?

I just bought a pair of bright blue pants (not skinny jeans but lightweight slim fit pants that go to the ankle - this is the color of them http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/vanilla-star--skin... I was wondering what type of top and accessories I could wear with it. I found this white top with sequins and would wear it with silver sandals but I wasn't sure if the sequins on the shirt and the color of the pants would be too much. http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/sequin-line-tee/10... I also found this top which I thought I could maybe wear with white flats and a white denim jacket. http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/ombre-sequined-tan... Or this one with black flats. http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/ring-back-scarf-pr... I'm not usually into such bright colors so I'm not sure what to pair them with but I was really drawn to the color. Thanks!

  • Food for a kid's party?

We are having my son's 5th birthday at a mini golf place from 11:00 to 1:00. The children are offered the choice of pizza or a hotdog for lunch and there will be unlimited chips and iced tea or soda for the kids and adults. The kids are also given the choice of chocolate or vanilla ice cream with rainbow or chocolate sprinkles. When I booked the party, I was told that bringing outside food is ok. I wasn't sure if I should supply any other food for the adults like a veggie platter or pizza pies or if snacking on the chips is ok. Also, if the kids are having ice cream, should I still bring a cake or cupcakes? I was thinking if I did bring a dessert, it would be cupcakes so it's easy for them to bring home if they were full from lunch and ice cream. Any suggestions would be great!

  • Translating an English word into Hebrew?

My grandma passed away almost a year ago and I wanted to get a tattoo in memory of her. I have an image that I would like to use and underneath it, I wanted to have her name. I called her "Gram" so I would like to put that but I am unsure of the letters to use for it. I did a search online and found the word "Grandma" spelled out in Hebrew letters but if I could, I would rather have Gram. Thanks for the help!

  • How to loosen up too-tight curls?

I went to a salon on Tuesday and asked for a body wave for that beachy look. Because I have short, chin length hair, smaller rollers were used so the hair would be able to wrap around them instead of the fatter ones. The chemicals were checked after 15 minutes but were left in for 20. The stylist said that she does them a little tighter because they're supposed to relax and if she does them loose, after a while, it won't look like anything was done. Anyway, it came out very tight like a perm instead of loose like a body wave and it's not what I was looking for at all. I washed my hair with shampoo and conditioner the next morning and it still looks the same. I was told that the chemicals from coloring my hair will loosen the curls. I'm due soon to color my hair anyway. Is it safe to color it now, 2 days after the body wave? And does anyone have experience with at-home hair straighteners or any methods that would loosen the curls besides a flat iron? I don't mind holding off on coloring my hair if I have to use another chemical process to straighten the hair but I can't wait the few weeks for the curls to loosen because I just can't stand them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid won't hold a jump?

My husband has a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid and we were going to use it on New Year's Eve. The car wouldn't start so we used my car to jump start it. It worked fine for the hour we drove it and then parked it for 5 hours. When we went to use it to drive back home, it wouldn't start and we had to jump it again. It was fine the entire way home but it wouldn't start the next morning we went to use it. I'm going to jump it again tomorrow morning so I can bring it to the Honda dealership but does anyone have any suggestions as to what it can be? I'm not sure if it's the battery but I read online that the battery packs cost around $3,000 with an 8 year/80,000 mile warranty. The car is under both the year and mile limits so I'm hoping the battery pack will be 100% covered.

  • Gifts for preschoolers?

I'm the class mom for my son's nursery school. We're having a holiday party where the parents will hand in $2 or $3 for me and the other class mom to purchase a small gift with. Then one of the dads will dress as Santa and pass out the gifts. The teacher said they should all be the same thing and suggested finding something at the dollar store and something like coloring books and crayons have been done in the past. What are some other suggestions that we can do aside from coloring books?

  • Finishing craft projects?

I once heard of a site that you could send unfinished needlepoint pictures or knitted blankets and for a price, they would finish it for you and send it back. I can't think of the name and was wondering if anyone knows of a site that can do it. I have a blanket that my sister-in-law gave me a few months ago to make for my nephew but I just don't have the time to do it.

  • Cooling time for chocolates?

I'm going to make chocolates for a party and was wondering how long it would take to cool and harden once it's poured into the molds. Also, is it better to put the molds into the freezer or refrigerator?

  • Should I get a helmet for a toddler?

My son will be 3 in June and my mom got him a "My First Scooter" to give for his birthday. I was wondering if a helmet is necessary. He loves Elmo/Sesame Street and I saw a set that has the helmet, knee and elbow pads with the characters all over it but since he won't be going that fast, I was wondering if he needs this or should we wait until he starts riding a bike to get the helmet.

  • How do I remove a sticky substance from a suede-like material?

I just put slipcovers on my couch and love seat and there were stickers saying which was the left and right arm and the center of the cover for easy positioning. When I pulled off the stickers, it left behind a little bit of a sticky substance. What would be the best way to remove it? I'm afraid to wet the spots with water because it could leave a mark. Would throwing it in the washing machine take care of it or is there something else I can use?

  • Laminate or wood flooring?

Right now I have wall to wall carpet in my living room that's not looking so great. I'm interested in a wood floor, probably using an area rug as well to warm it up a little. My question, though, is which is better for a family with 2 boys (9 and 2) and a dog, the laminate or hardwood flooring? I want something that can withstand the traffic of the whole family. We spend most of our time in the living room, so there would be toys on the floor and the dog coming in and out and occasional food/drinks with the possibility of spills.

  • Paralegal certificate or AA degree in paralegal studies?

I received a Bachelors degree in Social Science in December 2003 but took some time off from school to be home with my kids. I'm interested in becoming a paralegal but was wondering which would better to have: a paralegal certificate which would take about 9 months or an Associates degree in paralegal studies which would take two years? The ten courses I would need for the certificate are 30 hours each while the ones for the degree would last a whole semester so I'm guessing I'd be receiving more education since I'd be in each class longer. I know there's quite a bit of difference in cost between the two and the amount of time in which I would be finished but what is looked upon more favorably when I'm ready to find a job? If it matters, I'm more interested in working in the courts instead of in a law firm.

  • When is it safe to wash red clothes with other laundry?

I've been washing red clothes separately but its sort of a pain to wait until enough red clothes pile up before I'm able to wash them. When is it safe to put them in with other laundry without worrying that they will run?

  • Car accident questions?

I was the first car at a red light waiting for clearance to make a right on red. My car was angled to the right in order to make the turn, but there were cars coming from my left so I couldn't. I was rear-ended by the woman behind me who thought I had turned and when she realized I was still there, she couldn't stop in time and her front passenger side hit my rear driver side. There were a few scratches to her car but more significant damage to mine. The insurance companies I spoke to (hers and mine) asked if she received a ticket. I said no because I didn't see the police officer give a ticket to her but is it necessary to call the police department to make sure or would the insurance companies find that information out?

Also, I have the other driver's name and address from the police report but both of our phone numbers were not listed. I feel like I should send a note to her just to see how she's feeling. Is that a good idea to do or is it better to just let the insurance companies deal with it and not contact her?

  • Scrapbook page idea for parade?

My family and I went to Sesame Place over the summer and I have a lot of great pictures of the characters from the Rock Around the Block parade. The people in the parade wore 50s type clothes so I was looking for embellishments like records or things from the 50s but I'm not having much luck. I can't think of what kind of layout to do: background paper (plain or pattern), embellishments, etc. I would appreciate all ideas. Thanks!

  • Surgery for a dog's torn ligament?

My 6 1/2 year old chocolate lab tore a ligament in her left knee two years ago. She was put on anti-inflammatory medication for a short time and I was told she'd need surgery to repair it. Instead of letting her run free in the yard where she was constantly hurting the knee, she's been on a runner and has been perfectly fine with no limp (at least not noticeable to us) for a year and a half. On Friday, she got off the property and was running for about 15 minutes at a fast pace and wound up hurting the knee again. I took her to the vet today and she's back on anti-inflammatory medication. Unfortunately she now has muscle atrophy from not properly using the leg. The vet recommended surgery again and said his lab had the surgery done on both legs and he recovered fine. I just wanted to hear people's experiences with their dogs having ligament surgery. How long was the recovery time? Did it wind up helping? I've also heard of dogs tearing the ligament in the other leg by overcompensating during the healing process. Has that happened to your dog? Any advice or information is greatly appreciated.

  • Question about a carpet runner?

I have a lighter color carpet in my hallway between the linoleum floor in the kitchen and a darker color carpet in the living room. So it wouldn't get noticeably dirty, I put a darker color carpet runner on top of it. As the family keeps walking on it, it shifts to the side near the wall. Is there something I can put on the bottom of the runner to keep it from shifting out of place? My mother-in-law suggested attaching velcro to the corners of the runner so it would stick to the carpet underneath. Do you think that will work or is there something else I can use?
