  • Liquid regulations for India in carry-on?

Has anyone flown international to/from India in the last month? If so, what did you do about liquids in your carry-on? My airline (Cathay Pacific) says none but I've heard differently elsewhere...

I'm only taking a carry-on so I really need to know if I can take any liquids (makeup, hand sanitizer, etc) or if I am absolutely restricted to solids.

In your answer, please put destination city, origin city, and airline if possible.

    Thanks!

  • Where do I find a gas fireplace repair person?

My husband and I bought a house a few months ago and our fireplace wasn't working when we got it (house was as-is). Now that it's getting colder, we really want it to work. The fireplace is gas only and when we try to get the gas to light, nothing happens. We know we have gas in the house (furnace) but no matter what we try, nothing works for the fireplace.

What type of person would we contact to come fix it? Contractor? Chimney Sweep?

Thanks! (We're in CO if that helps)

  • Should I pay off my student loan or wait until I finish my Ph.D.?

My husband is a Ph.D. student right now and I'm working but I plan on going back to get my Ph.D. in August, 2010.

We only have a mortgage and my student loan as debt.

We will have enough in our Emergency Fund to pay my student loan in full at the beginning of March, 2010 and still have that recommended $1,000 left in it (plus another "Irregular fund" to cover taxes, tuition, car repair).

However, I don't know if I should pay it off or not...

    The interest rate is 3.25%

The balance is about $12,500 (right now, about $12k or a little less by the end of Feb)

I can defer it with no interest when I start my Ph.D. (secured federal stafford loan)

However, I hate having debt and by paying it off, I can add an extra $1000 to the EF for a total of just over $7,000 when I start school again in that account in case something happens as I'm paying $200/mo on the loan that would go to the EF instead.

So I just wanted someone else to tell me their thoughts...

Option 1) pay off SL in full at the start of March, rebuild the EF as much as possible before school starts (and the income drops)

Option 2) Keep building EF and paying on SL until I finish school and then pay off the loan

(note: with option 2, other expenses could come up that would mean the money wouldn't be available to pay off the loan after I graduate, meaning I'd be back to paying $200/mo on it again)

    thanks!

  • Lost a Northface jacket and can't find the product now...?

I bought a great Northface jacket in July, 2008 in Canada. However, I lost it on my honeymoon and I'd love to replace it. But I can't find it anywhere!! Can someone suggest anything?

It was red (also came in black, I think) and had a hood that had a pattern inside (black with other colors). It had monkey thumb holes and two outside zipper pockets. It also had two big inside pockets. It was very light weight and stretchy. I paid around $90 at the time.

The closest match I've found is: The North Face Women's Momentum Fleece Jacket but that has no hoodie or inside pockets.

Please let me know if you can help, or at least tell me why North Face discontinues products and if there is a place to find them.

    Thanks.

  • Does anyone know where I can find a Bones script?

I love watching the TV show Bones but I'm trying to convince my fiance that we can cancel cable and watch everything online. However, I need captioning as I have a hearing loss and only SOME of the Bones episodes on Hulu are captioned.

Does anyone know where I can find full scripts for the episodes? I would need them within a day or two of when the show is aired.

    Thanks!

  • How can I get my parents to say no?

Odd question, yes, so here are more details:

I am the oldest sibling and have one younger brother. My parents are divorced and have been for almost 20 years. My brother will be 21 in June and I am 25.

I am living on my own, about to get married, and have been taking care of myself, for the most part, since I left for college at 18.

My brother has been living with/off of my parents with a 6 month break to live in Miami and do odd jobs. He's been to college for a little while, but didn't do as well as he should have and was bored and thus left. He's gotten into all kinds of "bad things" and has no concept of money, saving, or independence.

He's living with my father now, with no job, no desire to get one, etc... (and really, it's hard to blame him in some ways...free is nice!). However, I'm worried about him never learning how to fend for himself.

How can I get my parents to stop giving him an "out" when he doesn't like life (or it gets "too hard")?

I know I should just let it go, but he's my baby brother and I feel obligated to give it one last ditch effort before getting married and moving on into my new family.

    Thanks everyone!

  • Online file or H&R Block?

I have filed my taxes for 2 years now, but this year is different for me and I'm a little uncertain as to what to do.

I was a student, and graduated in May 2006. As a student, I earned a graduate stipend...which means only fed and state taxes were withheld AND at a rate with what I was making...then I graduated.

I am now earning more than 3x what I was and thus am in a higher tax bracket.

I also "sold" stock, although have since lost more than half of what was left in the account due to the market.

My question is...in order to make sure everything is correct, should I have the taxes prepared professionally or try and do them myself online for free? H&R Block is $175 to do them and I'd rather save myself the money but I don't want to pay way more than I already have to either.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Change stocks to cash?

    Hi everyone,

With the doom that is the ecomony today, I'm trying to find a way to save what I have (left) in stocks. I would like to keep it there, but at the rate I'm loosing (almost 50% is gone in just over a year!), I'm afraid it'll all be gone. Also, I was hoping to use some of it towards my wedding in 6 months.

The problem is that right now, I'm not in a tax bracket that I can get the 0% cap gains rate but I WILL be for the 2009 tax year.

Therefore, is there anyway to put my money in a safer place the rest of this year without getting a tax on it?

    Thanks!

  • Free make-over at malls?

    Hi everyone,

I'm getting married in May and I thought it would be a good idea to start figuring out what looks best on me and isn't standard every-day wear. To that effect I was wondering what stores at the mall will do a make-over so I can see how different things work.

Can you please tell me if places like Macy's, Dillard's, Nordstorm, Sephora, etc will do a free make-over and how pushy they are about buying a product from them?

    Thanks!

  • How much should a wedding dress cost if the base price is $650?

I found a wedding dress I really like with a base price of $650. However, after adding on a "hollow to hem" charge, neckline change charge, decoration charge, and taxes...the dress comes to $1010.

Is this reasonable? They also said to add another ~$200 for alterations.

I was hoping to only spend $1200 on everything (veil, dress, slip, shoes).

Does anyone have any advice? I wear a 4 so getting it second hand will probably not happen.

    Thanks.

  • What do non-American citizens think of the candidates?

I'm not interested in starting a debate or hearing how one "rocks" and the other "sucks" but just in a few words, those of you who CAN'T vote for the next president...what do you think of the options we have and who would you prefer to see in office? Please keep the answer respectful and legible.

  • Azalea plant in apartment?

    Help someone,

My father gave my fiance and I an azalea plant for a present and we live in an apartment (on the 3rd floor!). It's already beginning to die, what can I do with it? Is there anyway to keep it alive in a pot or should I just give it away?

    Thanks.

  • Where is the best place to get a cell phone without renewing my contract?

I am eligible for an upgrade with AT&T in October but I may be leaving the country before those 2 years would be up and thus I would like to avoid having to have a long contract.

However, I have a very old phone and would like a newer one with bluetooth (camera optional) for under $100 if possible. I have looked on ebay but I can't try out the phones and I don't know if they are trust worthy.

Are there any other suggestions? Retail stores that have them?

    Thanks!

  • What type of job should I look for?

I am graduating with my MS in Biomedical Engineering sometime in may 2008 (I hope) or shortly thereafter. For one year past that time, I want some kind of income until I go to graduate school again for a PhD. I want it near Denver, CO and I don't know if I should get an internship, co-op type thing or an actual job.

    So my question is:

for a one year period of time, what kind of job should I be looking for? How should I tell people I interview with that I won't be there long? What kind of pay can I expect with my education but short time frame?

No the year isn't negotiable, I'm waiting for my boyfriend to finish his MA before we both go to a PhD.

    Thanks!

  • Separate Accounts?

Does anyone have a separate account from their spouse as well as a joint account? I'd like to do that so I can spend money the way I want and so can he, plus at present time, there is no way for the other person to find out early...but my guy thinks it is a dumb idea and we should pool all money and never have separate accounts.

  • How do you deal with having a long distance relationship?

I am specifically asking about my situation but I'd like to know how you deal with it. I know a similar question has been asked but mine's a little different.

I have dated this guy for 4 years and a couple weeks now. We started dating as freshmen in college and now I'm in grad school in UT and he's finishing his 5th year at our old place in OH. Needless to say, that's really far away. My biggest problem is not being jealous when he goes and hangs out with friends until 2 or 3 am on the weekends.

So how do you guys cope with being really far away from someone you love and how do you cope with different social lives? We're in our early twenties and plan on getting married at some point but for right now we're looking at a LDR of about 5 years. Please don't tell me it's stupid and won't work because I'm looking for encouragement and helpful ideas.

    Thanks!
