PSALM 64 1HEAR MY voice, O God, in my complaint; guard and preserve my life from the terror of the enemy. 2Hide me from the secret counsel and conspiracy of the ungodly, from the scheming of evildoers, 3Who whet their tongues like a sword, who aim venomous words like arrows, 4Who shoot from ambush at the blameless man; suddenly do they shoot at him, without self-reproach or fear. 5They encourage themselves in an evil purpose, they talk of laying snares secretly; they say, Who will discover us ? 6They think out acts of injustice and say, We have accomplished a well-devised thing! For the inward thought of each one [is unsearchable] and his heart is deep. 7But God will shoot an unexpected arrow at them; and suddenly shall they be wounded. 8And they will be made to stumble, their own tongues turning against them; all who gaze upon them will ... flee away. 9And all men shall ...be in awe; and they will declare the work of God,... 10The righteous shall be glad ...

  • What is your definition of "third world"?

There seems to be some confusion about this - one questioner here even seemed to think it had something to do with gay marriage of all things LOL. No wonder our country is being stolen away from us without the majority realizing it. And this process has been going on for decades - the last time America had a really large and robust middle class was in the 1950's.

Here is my definition: The main thing lacking in a "third world" country is there is NO MIDDLE CLASS. Maybe one percent of the population is doing very well economically and living very well materially. Then there is the other 99 percent. The other 99 percent are either in dire poverty or very near there. Some live from day to day by going into debt. There is no middle class as we would traditionally envision it. Most Latin American countries including Mexico are this way. The United States is gradually becoming this way IMO.

Yes I am aware that the term "Third World" originated during the Cold War to describe non-aligned nations that didn't take sides with either the US or the Soviet Union. But in latter days like many things it has taken on different meanings to different people. What is your take?

  • Why is the Religion & Spirituality section frequented by people who by their own admission have neither one?

OK so I get that some people have philosophical and/or intellectual objections to belief in God. I understand and respect that. I was an atheist at one time myself so I am familiar with all of the arguments. I have read Bertrand Russell, etc.I am a university grad who has taken courses that discussed atheism as well as comparative religions. Isn't there an atheist/agnostic section or subcategory on here? I am not one so I've never checked or felt a need to check it out.

  • Please explain these to me - directed to Catholics only?

Mary is claimed to be the co-redemptrix or co-redeemer of mankind by many Catholics. This implies that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ alone on the Cross was in and of itself not enough. Maybe by co-redeemer they mean "helper" but if that's the case then we as real believers are all "co-redeemers" in that sense. Maybe someone can explain this a bit better to me. Unless someone convinces me otherwise Jesus Christ is our only Savior. (1 Timothy 2:5 and many other Scriptures). Even Mary admitted her need for a Savior (It's in Scripture). Jesus Christ is our only Savior and Redeemer. That is my belief.

Some Catholics have also claimed that a devotion to Mary is necessary for salvation. I can give you a list of RC saints and popes who have said this. Myself I do not believe this. I think it's going a bit to far.

Is it OK to venerate Mary and respect her as the earthly mother of Jesus? Yes of course it is. Is it OK to ask for her intercession? Sure, I ask people to please pray for me all the time, why not her too? I believe in the power of intercessory prayer like a lot of people do. But I think some of this stuff goes a bit too far. Is she the "Mother of God"? Well she is the mother of Jesus the man and if she would have said no to this God would have found someone else, but we are all asked to chose, every day.

I really don't want to hear from atheist trolls on this. If I do I will flag your messages and send them to Yahoo for possible account deletion. I know you don't believe in God and that you don't care about this. Go somewhere else with your comments. I am asking serious theological questions here.

Scripture says that God is not a God of confusion. These things I've listed above appear to be things added by latter day men and are sowing seeds of doubt and confusion among people.

  • Why don't Arizona politicians advocate bringing jobs and industry to that state?

You have all sorts of unemployed and underemployed people here. Yet I hear about states like Mississippi, etc getting new auto plants and factories. You can only build so many houses. More foreclosed homes here than anywhere else. People need good jobs before they can even think about buying a home.

  • Where can I get some sort of cover for a push-in locking button on a door knob?

There is a door where I work where there is a push-in button on the back of the door handle, but it keeps getting pressed in (either accidentally or intentionally), thereby unintentionally locking out people who need to get in. This push-in button cannot be removed, because there actually are times when the door might need to be locked in this manner. The door is a card-reader access door entering the building, and cannot be propped open or left totally unlocked at any time. I've heard that there are small removable plastic covers for things like this, to prevent the locking button from accidentally being pushed in or turned to lock, but for the life of me I cannot find out where. Anyone out there have any info or ideas on this?

[I know this isn't a home maintenence question, more of a work/security/maintenence question, but this is the closest category I could find to put it in]

  • Do Christians deserve to live?

I was in the process of crafting an answer to this somewhat outrageous "question" that was asked by someone on here. Yes, they do ask these sort of things on here - those of you who are new to this R & S forum.

Here is my reply that I was getting ready to post:

If you look honestly and objectively at Christianity and the history of it, you will have to acknowledge that it has actually done the world more good than harm. It's philosophy of love, forgiveness, helping our downtroden and less fortunate brothers and sisters, has actually helped make this a more humane world. Christians don't get much credit for this, but it's true nonetheless.

Have wars been started in the name of Christ? Yes. Have people who call themselves Christian acted less than Christian-like? Yes, of course. But the overall effect of Christianity on the world has been a beneficial one that has helped make this world a better one. Hospitals as we know them today were a creation of the Christian Church. Universities as we know them today were actually first created by the Church. The Church was actually the protector and preserver of academic knowledge and science during the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages. Monks laboring away in monastaries copying manuscripts and preserving them have allowed us to know and retain what the ancients learned and knew, otherwise we would have no knowledge of them.

Christians perform unnoticed and unhealded acts of charity every day.

Yes, they deserve to live. And by the grace of God, sincere ones deserve to be forgiven of their sins as long as they realize that it is God's mercy that is saving them, and not their own actions.

  • Question for Christians - Generational Curses and bondages - what is your opinion of this?

I am a Christian, and the Bible states quite clearly in many places that sin and it's effects can be passed down through succeeding generations. It can explain why those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ still may run into severe problems and may be under attack in the battle of the spiritual realm that is going on around us. I just want different Christian opinions on this. Atheists - I know you think this is all a bunch of hooey, and you are entitled to your belief, but I'm not looking for that sort of reply. I actually have good friends and aquaintences that are atheists/agnostics, and we still respect one another.... but what I'd like is fellow Christians take on the intergenerations curses thing. What do you all think????

  • Catholics: A good prayer with a Scripture quote for a priest?

There is a priest in our parish who will be leaving for another assignment next we and we are giving him a little card with messages on it and then signing it. I have my own prayers and thoughts of course, but was wondering what others might have in mind and heart, being that this is the liturgical "Year of Priests" as proclaimed by Benedict XVI

  • How do you get a new subcategory created in Yahoo! Answers?

There are so many broad groups in here that really should be subdivided into narrower topics based on specific interest. I know it would not stop trolling, but that's not the reason I'm asking. I think it would be easier to find answers or ask questions if some of these groups were subdivided

    Examples:

Under Religion & Spirituality you could have seperate categories for Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Wicca, Atheism/Agnostic

I notice that they have a seperate subsection under Society and Culture for Gender/Women's Issues? Where is the Men's Issues section?

I think this Answers forum needs some serious updating and getting with the times to really facilitate and encourage discussion

  • What is the best way to combat a "smear campaign" against you?

What I'm talking about is malicious gossip concerning supposed past events and a deliberately one-sided & biased slant on them, mixed with outright false accusations & fabrications, innuendo, in total an orchestrated campaign of deliberate character assassination. Talk specifically designed to make others you come in contact with intensely dislike you, and want to disassociate themselves from you, even though they really haven't had a chance to actually get to know you yet. The people doing this are doing a good job of remaining "hidden", so direct personal confrontation is not a possibility. If a person is the object of this sort of thing, what sorts of real steps can be taken to combat and mitigate it?

  • What are the signs that you are possibly under surveillance?

Not just something like someone shadowing you - a person can figure that out on their own after a while. I mean things like maybe a small group or network of people, and not just out on the streets, but online too..... I know some people make a living off of detecting these sorts of things, maybe there are some things to watch for..... I'm not talking about police or law enforcement either.. Really isn't a good category for this question but maybe someone with that sort of experience can chime in here

  • Another reason not to tie retirement plans to the stock market?

A little while back, I revisited the question that I posed nine months ago and that was a major idea of the Bush Administration - allowing the private financial sector to take over Social Security. I am aware that the government handling of it up to now has been found wanting in many respects. But do we really want the alternative, which seems to be this:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090330/ap_on_bi_st_ma...

Every time something happens, the market swings wildly. Panic seems to be the order of the day. Old-fashioned pensions and private pension funds based on things like bonds, CD's, and solid investments were a better idea IMO...... We really never should have tied retirements to things like 401k's in my opinion. What do you think?

  • What's your opinion of, and experiences with, online college courses?

I just completed an online English 101 college course through my local community college. I ended up getting an A in it, BTW.... It was a lot of reading and writing and was an accelerated 8 week class. Lots of work, but being mostly essay writing it seemed well suited to be an online class. I had the option of attending an actual class, but I work full time, and plus I am older and didn't relish the prospect of sitting in a class with only 18-19 year olds where I'm the only "oldster" (including the instructor, who may be in some way put off or offended by your presense there. Been there, done that. Being in an online class gets you away from all of that - your work is looked at objectively without you personally becoming an issue personally, and I enjoyed that. What are other peoples experiences with online college courses?

  • What is your opinion of the policy of degregulation and no oversight of corporate entities over the last 8 yrs?

The prevailing attitude since about 1980 has been to write corporate America (the same people who gave us Enron, AIG, Bernie Madoff) a blank check and let everyone do as they please with as little public scrutiny as possible. What's everyone's opinion on this?

  • How does everyone feel about tying Social Security to the stock market?

I asked this same question about nine months ago, and I am going back and re-reading the responses to them. Some of them are quite humorous (unintentionally). Some are very naive. Well, what say ye alle now?

  • How do you find an unknown number when an amount and the percentage of it is known?

    Example:

54 is 22 percent of what number?

Just looking for an elegant, straightforward answer here - I have an entrance exam coming up in a few days with a math component, and it asks a lot of these type of questions. I am not a math whiz - I know this is easy for someone who is, I'm just asking for some help here. Thanks!

  • Is "schadenfreude" a sin? If so, why, if not, again why?

I have my own viewpoint on this - I just want to see what everyone else thinks. And yes, I know everyone at least secretly engages in it once in a while. I saw this question being asked in another forum and some of the answers were interesting.

  • What is the term for deliberately misrepresenting someone else?

in such a way that it would cause that person to be unjustly hated or ostricized by others? I heard the name once but cannot remember it. What I am thinking of really isn't libel or slander - I know those terms. This could possibly involve something that might actually be true about a person, or maybe at one time true, but it would be the intent that matters.

  • Best way to combat slanderous (and untrue) accusations?

When a person is the target of unfair and malicious gossip/slander, what is the best way to combat it? Or is it best to just try and ignore it? I myself have always considered that if you protest too much or spend too much of your time trying to set the record straight, it will just appear that you are trying to cover up the supposed truth, and will actually give some legitimacy and credence to the accusations, legitimacy and credence that they do not deserve. What does everyone think?
