I'm Katy from St. Louis, MO. I have my beliefs, you have yours. That's the way it ought to be. :) I love discussing my viewpoint, but will always respect others' views as well. I love learning. I hope to be an elementary teacher one day. I loathe school. I wish I could end my school days now so as to continue my education. It's complicated. ...but I manage to be particularly good at school anyway. (I'm a nerd) I'm a huge StL Cardinals fan. Baseball is my favorite sport, although I enjoy all sports. I'm a proud movie buff. I love reading and writing. My family may drive me crazy but I'm incredibly grateful for them and I'll always love them. My friends are the best I could ever ask for. I collect coins, stuffed animals, glass bottles, Pokemon cards, baseball cards, junk, wacky socks, etc. I play alto saxophone and I'm attempting to teach myself piano. I want to learn German. I love to travel and Canada is at t

  • Suggestions for driving/around town games like a scavenger hunt?

There's nothing to do in my tiny town, so I'd like ideas.

I know of a lot of people who do scavenger hunts ("Get a picture of a group hug with your team and a stranger" "Find someone with the same name as a team member" etc).

But I've also heard of some game with two teams in cars. One person from each team goes with the opposing group and is blindfolded, driven somewhere within the fair boundaries, and dropped off. Once both individuals are dropped off somewhere, they have to call their own team and describe their surroundings/ try to walk the way back to somewhere they recognize and get picked up. The first team to find their lost person and make it back to the checkpoint wins that round.

Ever heard of any games like that? Any other ideas of things to do?

  • Where can I find information on employment, salary, etc. for future teachers (with more details)?

    Preferably including these specifics:

    -in Missouri

-for elementary teachers and/or special education

-for people with a master's degree, in contrast to a bachelor's

-the next ten or twenty years if possible.

I mostly need to know projected job openings, hiring opportunites, etc.

Graphs or visual depictions would be appreciated, but any information is great.

    Thank you!

  • What to do about "Continue replacing your battery" notification?

I have a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 and today after I started up my computer, this notification came up. Apparently this is fairly common in Windows 7.

My sister has had a similar problem. She took out her battery and now solely relies on having her laptop (same type as mine - both a little less than two years old) plugged into the charger at all times.

Now I'm wondering if I should take my battery out as well? Would it affect my laptop any further to keep the battery in for the time being and attempt to find a different solution?

I know I could buy another battery, but I want to be sure there are no other options or solutions to try.

    Any input is greatly appreciated!

  • What to do if Internet Explorer can't be updated?

Youtube has recently begun notifying me that I need to update my browser because I'm using IE 7 and will be unable to view videos soon.

Multiple times, I've attempted to update my browser from Microsoft but every time it finally finishes downloading, I'm notified that I already have an updated version of IE.

I plan on just ignoring Youtube's notifications because I don't know of what else I should do. However, for future reference, what would you suggest I do to update IE if necessary?

  • What to do about a virus hiding my files?

I went to Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Folder Options and made sure the "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" was checked and I unchecked"Hide protected operating system files".

Multiple sources told me to do these things, but it only partially worked:

    - Most of my files seem to have returned. However, they are all either locked or appear faded, as if they're not completely recovered.

    - Extra files have appeared, I'm assuming because I unchecked the Recommended setting that hides protected operating systems.

    - My anti-malware systems have been hidden as well.

    - And my Internet Explorer favorites have yet to be unhidden at all. No matter what I do with the Internet Options, they remain hidden.

I've tried multiple tutorials from bleepingcomputer.com and I've even asked this question a few times on Y!A, but with no luck. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

  • How to unhide all IE Favorites and other files?

All of my files were hidden by a virus, and most of them still are.

Are there any tips specifically that would unhide my IE favorites?

Or is there something that I can do to unhide all of my files (the ones that have been unhidden are either locked and/or appear faded, as if they're not fully recovered).

I have gone to my Contol Panel > File Options and made sure "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" was checked, etc.

I've unchecked "hide extensions for known file types" as well as "hide protected operating system files" as multiple sources has told me to do so.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • What to do about a computer virus hiding files?

I've used the tutorial on bleepingcomputer.com to unhide some files.

However, all of the icons appear to be faded, as if they're still locked. While I can access them, this is obviously not the way it should be.

Also, my Internet favorites are still missing, as well as my antivirus systems (Spybot and Norton- which clearly were not exactly efficient).

How can I retrieve my IE favorites/any other files that are missing, such as the antivirus systems?

For the record, I have Windows 7.

  • Different US quarters - fifty states and more?

Obviously there are some quarters that display a certain state on the back - for instance, the Missouri quarter shows the St. Louis Arch and a picture of Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea in a canoe.

Recently I came across a quarter for the District of Columbia and realized this does make sense. But now I'm wondering what other types of quarters are there?

Besides the fifty states and the District of Columbia, are there any other quarters dedicated to certain districts, etc?

  • Any idea what this computer virus is/how to fix it?

A few things I've noticed so far:

    1) Internet won't allow me to open links from search engines such as Google. Instead, it reroutes me to things like AskTheCrew.net and random sites such as an online lawn mower store. However, I can copy the URL offered from the search and paste it into the address bar to go to the site I wish to go to. This is obviously irritating.

    2) I've attempted to change the desktop background and icons a few times and it works until I restart my computer, when it returns to the prior background.

    3) I have Norton 360 on my computer, and every time I turn on my computer it warns me that I'm at risk and Norton has to do several scans and "fix now" several issues. Every single time - it will constantly tell me that. It also always tells me to upgrade to SONAR and when I tell it to fix it, nothing happens.

    4) Occasionally, when I'm attempting to restart my computer, it will have some kind of Startup Scan going. It looks like a Microsoft Classic box and it runs sometimes just five minutes, but other times almost an hour. Afterwards, it always continues to start the computer and allow me to log in.

My sister has been having similar issues with her own computer, but for much longer than I have. Also, her computer will sometimes refuse to play sound or stereo at all.

If you could tell me perhaps what this virus may be and how to get rid of it because Norton Antivirus has done nothing to help, I'd be very appreciative. Thank you all!

  • Do you know of an example from history that would support this statement?

"Giving the power to determine what is morally right and wrong solely to one person is potentially dangerous."

The Holocaust is my prime example, but I'd love for any other historical references you can think of where the government in particular was responsible for obviously morally incorrect acts.

Thank you for all of your input.

    2 AnswersHistory10 years ago
  • What are some historical examples of a morally corrupt government?

I need to compare three historical events to The Crucible/Salem With Trials. More specifically, I'm supposed to answer the following:

Is there danger in allowing those in power to determine what is morally right and wrong? Why?

My view is that there is potential danger within giving masses of power solely to any one person. Obviously, it does not always end with fatal or tragic consequences but there still are instances where this was the case. So I need examples that would support this idea.

My first thought was the Holocaust - how Hitler managed to exterminate millions of people. This is clearly morally wrong and yet he saw it as good. Hitler called it the Final Solution.

Another possibility is the genocide in Rwanda.

Are there any other examples you can think of? Any input would help. Especially if you can think of something from around the same time as the Salem With Trials.

    Thank you!!

  • Best method of outlining a story?

I'm currently starting a new project and would like to find new ways to plot a story.

*I currently use a spiral notebook to jot down basically anything story-related - whether this is research, characterization, brainstorms, etc.

I'd normally map out my rough ideas for the plot first in this notebook. This would have minimal details, and no chapter seperations. The next step is where I need help.

I was hoping to get two things from this.

    1) Possibly something along the lines of this: http://corrinejackson.com/wordpress/2011/02/02/out...

This helps you organize your novel into three sections, with two plot points. I like this idea, but it feels as though the story in my head doesn't directly follow this pattern, and the plot points wouldn't be placed as directly as they are here.

So I'd love any other diagrams or steps on how to organize the events of your book into something like this.

    2) A way to visualize my plot once I've got the idea. I've seen people write a scene down on an index card, then put them in order on a bulletin board. I could do this, but I'd enjoy seeing and trying out any other ideas.

I also have a large quantity of green bar paper, or lined printer paper. This would be good to see everything in linear form, however I feel like I'd be more inclined to be less organized if I just started outlining on this.

Any suggestions on how to see my plot take shape?

I'd prefer not to use a computer program. If I do most of the plotting by hand, with physical objects (like Post-It notes and paper) I will actually finish plotting in a reasonable amount of time, whereas otherwise I could be distracted by Facebook or Y!A or something of the sort.

All answers are appreciated. And any plotting tips are welcome. Thanks :)

I usually am more of a "pantser" than a "plotter", but I really want to give this a shot.

  • I need to figure out my plot lines for my story - can you help?

I've tried outlining my story idea several times, but always get stuck feeling as though my plot idea is merely fit for a subplot.

So far, I've come to this:

~somewhere along the way (preferably towards the end, perhaps at the climax of the story) there is a house fire involving the MC.

~this near-death experience sort of leads to a plot point where she finds her way out of a love triangle that has been building up throughout the story.

I don't want my story to be a romance, I don't want it to be mushy, and I definitely don't wish to have a MC who just complains about boys the whole time. So this can not become the main plot.

Also, I've realized that the fire really only works as a subplot, not as the full plot as I had originally intended.

I'm currently in the process of brainstorming ideas for a plot. The only reason I haven't ditched these ideas yet to find a new theme is because I'm set on this character and feel like a story must be told for her - including the house fire and love triangle.

Perhaps this is a weird question but I'd very much appreciate any ideas you can think of that'd help fuel this story, preferably intertwining the 2 subplots I have in mind. My ideas so far have been increasingly more ridiculous and I could use a little help. Thank you all so much, any ideas are appreciated.

    *My novel is contemporary fiction.

  • How do I unhide icons and shortcuts after a virus?

I recently was infected by the Windows Recovery virus. I'm almost certain I got rid of the virus, but there are so many hidden things left afterwards and nothing is helping.

I've tried unhide.exe about a dozen times and it only gave me back three icons - none of which are all that important.

    I'm still missing-

    1) about ten desktop icons, including 'My Computer' and 'Recycling Bin'.

    2) my Start Menu options, along with the All Programs' shortcuts. (there are folders in All Programs, however they all say (empty)

    3) The Start Menu icons. I got a few icons to go onto the Start Menu, however they're just games and I can't seem to get any of the old ones back on there.

I need a helpful program or manual to unhiding all of the above. I've tried so many things and have searched all over sites like BeepingComputer. Nothing I've tried works and I've been working at this for countless hours.

I'd really appreciate if someone could send me a link, or better yet just tell me simple but detail steps to unhiding these.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Help! Windows Recovery Virus?

I was recently hit with the Windows Recovery Virus.

After a little hysteria, I managed to get rid of it. It is now gone, however many things are still hidden.

For instance, I don't know how to get back all of the things that were once on my Start Menu. All of the icons are missing.

Also, in my All Programs area, the folders all say they're empty.

Lastly, I only have a couple icons. I tried unhide.exe and it got back three of my icons (Best Buy, Router Login, Router Setup) before it stopped. I had about ten more that I need unhidden.

I did manage to unhide my files (documents and photos, etc.) and they are seemingly okay.

I'd love a How-To to unhide my Start Menu shortcuts and my desktop icons. I'm not a computer whiz, but I have managed it all until now without much difficulty.

Please help me, I really do appreciate all answers!!

  • Any book suggestions?

    Hey :)

I'd love to have any book suggestions. I'm mainly into Young Adult fiction, but I've read a variety of things. A few of my favorites:

Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers

Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers

    Hold Still by Nina LaCour

The Book Theif by Markus Zusak

    The Messenger by Markus Zusak

    After by Amy Efaw

Names My Sisters Call Me by Megan Crane

    Driving Sideways by Jess Riley

    Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

    Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson

and there are others, but these are the latest books I've read that I absolutely loved.

Especially the books by Courtney Summers which were remarkable!

I have read books like the Harry Potter series, Uglies series, etc. and liked them. But I tend to like Realistic Fiction books more.

Thank you all! I'll take all the suggestions I can get! They're all very much appreciated!

  • Persuasive speech topics please!?

Hi, I need help with finding a good speech topic and I'm running out of ideas.

    Here are the requirements:

1- the topic has to be one where my classmates (high school students) will be able to take action for/against. As in the topic can't be something about voting in politics, because most of the people in there have a year or more until they are legally able to vote.

2- I'd like the topic to be somewhat school-related. I was thinking about talking about the right for schools to search lockers or personal bags if they have a legitimate reason and I'd like more ideas that would be somewhat like this. Anything to do with school so the class can feel like they know more about what I'm talking about and how this will directly effect them.

3- Some topics are overused and I'd rather not have those - things like saving endangered species or saving energy.

Thanks to everyone, hopefully I get a couple new ideas! I need this pretty fast but I'll be sure to try picking a best answer!!

  • Question about bipolar disorder?

My dad has Bipolar Disorder and I would like to know more about it.

When I first found out a couple years ago, my mom told me it normally skipped a generation. So that means my kids have a chance of being Bipolar, correct?

Well, sometimes I suspect I have Bipolar Disorder. I've looked up signs of it and realized I do express several of the symptoms.

I'd like to know what my chances of having Bipolar Disorder are.

Maybe I'm just overly dramatic, but it seems like I can't control my emotions or temper when it comes to some of the silliest, smallest things and this fact really bothers me.

A bit more info: my dad's side is the only side of my family with bipolar disorder. My uncle and my dad are both bipolar. Other than that, I'm not sure of anyone else in my family with the disorder.

Hopefully someone can help :) Thanks so much!
