  • Good running shoes for long-distance running?

I'm wanting to buy my husband a pair of running shoes for his birthday. His old ones are almost worn out. He normally does long-distance running - at least 10 miles per run, frequently more. We're on a VERY limited budget, so I'd like to find something that is good but reasonably priced. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

  • Tax credit for a child born in December (No social security number)?

    Hi all,

I desperately need to file my taxes because my refund is financing the majority of my maternity leave. My daughter was born on December 18, and I have not received her social security card yet. Can I claim her without it?

The social security office says it can take 13 weeks to get the card - is there a way to get her number before the card arrives?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Marriage between American citizen and international student?

I am an American citizen and my partner is an international graduate student with an F-1 student visa. We'd like to become legally married (we have one child together and one on the way), but I'm not sure how that will affect his standing as a student.

Will he lose funding? Will he be able to stay in the country? Will he be able to leave the country to visit family?

Also, if we get married, I know he won't get a "green card" right away. How will this affect our taxes? Do we need a special tax form? Will it greatly affect the amount of our refund?

(I probably need an immigration lawyer, but we're both poor graduate students .... soo... I'm just trying to get some advice so I know where to start.)

  • Why does everyone think that only the anti-feminists get answers removed unfairly?

Yahoo doesn't check the reports - they just remove them. For example:

    Ominous asked:

    "Selling 5 Women's Studies women for $10,000?

As a pimp I sell women. I'm having a sale of the women on the Women's Studies forum. Is this a good deal or what? Take your pic: Croa, Greymalkin, Allegra, etc...they're yours if you got the cash."

I reported him because he was in clear violation of Yahoo! answers policy, and because he was way out of line. His question still stands.

    I answered the question:

"Wow, in your next question, you dared someone to name 4 regulars that degrade women. This puts YOU on that list. You're not nearly as funny or as smart as you think you are. Oh and ..... REPORTED.

Deleted Answer: Wow, in your next question, you dared someone to name 4 regulars that degrade women. This puts YOU on that list. You're not nearly as funny or as smart as you think you are. Oh and ..... REPORTED."

My answer was removed, even though it was NOT in violation.

  • Has anyone ever taken Compazine for nausea?

It's been prescribed for me, but I have to work full-time and it seems to be "Serious" stuff. It warns of dizziness, drowsiness, overheating, etc. (heh - one of the listed side effects is even NAUSEA!)

I'm wondering - if you did take it, how were the side effects? Were you able to work? Did it help you?

  • How many calories should you consume during your first trimester?

I've heard that you need 300 more calories per day in your second/third trimester, but how many should you consume per day in your first trimester?

I still haven't lost the weight from Baby # 1 (10 months old now), and I don't want to gain too much too early.

    Thanks!

  • Baby won't swallow amoxicillan?

My 9-month-old daughter has an ear infection, and she was prescribed 1 tsp of amoxicillian twice daily. I tried to give her the first dose, but she obviously hated the taste and just spit it out. She probably swallowed less than a quarter of it. What should I do? How can I get her to take her medicine?

    Thanks.

  • Teacher's certificate in MO with an advanced degree?

I am a graduate student in anthropology. I have a bachelor's and a master's in the subject. I've been working on a Ph.D., but since my daughter has been born, I just haven't had the time or energy to finish.

I'd like to take a break and teach high school science. I know I'm qualified in the subject matter, but I'll need to get a teacher's certificate.

What is the procedure in the state of Missouri? Will I need another degree? If so, how complex is it? I could go for a Master's in Education at my current university, but given a standard teacher's salary, I'm not sure that's a good idea.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • The pilot light went out on our Enviro-Temp gas water heater last night. How to relight?

We rent, and this is the first time it's happened. We removed the panel and found the control area with the water temperature knob and the "pilot light" knob, but we can't actually find where to light the dang thing!! Does anyone know where it is? Thanks.

  • Labor at 35 weeks??

My sister is barely 35 weeks pregnant, and her water has broken. She's in the hospital, and they've induced with pitosin.

What are the likely complications for the baby, since this is considered "preterm" labor? What are the chances of these complications occurring?

She had an ultrasound a few weeks ago, and the baby's estimated weight at that time was only 3.5 lbs.

  • Has anyone ever taken a cruise with an infant? What were your experiences?

We've never been on a cruise, but were thinking about taking a Carnival cruise in March to the Carribbean. Our daughter will be 9 months old. Will they charge anything for her? Do infants handle cruises well? We can bring her pack 'n play for her to sleep in, but I heard ship's rooms are very small. Will there be room in standard cabin for her? She's generally outgoing and content, so we think she should be OK, but we'd like to hear others' first-hand experiences.

  • Are you supposed to tip for Applebee's "Carside To Go?"?

We have a young infant, so we frequently use their service instead of sitting down to a meal. We're not really being "waited on," so do we tip? If so, is it the same tip that we'd give a sit-down waiter inside?

My inclination is to give $1 or so for bringing it out to the car, but I wouldn't tip the full amount (well, I did once when it was snowing and the wind chill was miserable, but that's different).

    Thanks!

  • What age for baby yogurt?

How old should a baby be before you give her baby yogurt? Mine is 8 1/2 months old, and she's been eating small bits of table food and meats for a few weeks and handling them just fine.

I bought some of that organic whole milk baby yogurt, and tried a few bites yesterday evening. She seemed to like the taste, but she had bad gas during the night. Was it the yogurt? Was it too soon? I thought they were ready for it by 7 or 8 months.

  • Loooooong flight with 11-month-old?

This Spring, we are flying to South Africa so that our daughter can meet her grandparents. She'll be 11 months old, and I am dreading the flight.

With connections, the trip will take about 20 hours. Does anyone have any advice for keeping her calm and happy? Also, I don't think we can afford to pay for a separate seat for her, so she'll be on our laps for the whole journey. Does anyone have any experience with loooong airplane trips and restless babies?

  • Do I need a business license to do online proofreading?

A friend of mine has an established proofreading business, but she has more customers than she can handle. She's going to pass her extra clients to me. Do I need a business license or any type of certification to do this? What impact would this have on my taxes? What kinds of records would I need to keep? I'm a graduate student, so I've never been self-employed before and have no business experience.

  • Ethnic identity for a mixed-race daughter?

My daughter is 8 months old, and she comes from a mixed family. I am caucasian and native american. Her biological father is Asian Indian. My fiancee (who has been with me since I was pregnant, and is basically her father) is a Zulu from South Africa.

To me, she's just my little Peanut ... she's light enough that she seems "white" with me, but dark enough that she seems "mixed" with my fiancee.

I could care a less how she's classified, but every time I fill out a form, they ask for her "race." Also, as she gets older, I know people will try to place her in their own categories.

How do I instill a sense of pride and self-identity in her, and at the same time maker her comfortable in a world that insists on placing people in categories?

  • Why do people assume that working mothers are not good mothers?

(This is in response to the question: Why do working mothers despise stay at home mothers?)

I respect the choice of stay-at-home mothers to stay at home; why do many of them reject my choice to work?

My daughter goes to a good day care which she enjoys attending. The daycare is on-campus, so I can usually pop by and see her during lunch. I took as much maternity leave as I could (3 months), and worked only part-time for an additional 4 months. I breast feed, I pump, I co-sleep, and I feel like I am providing excellent care for her (she's 7 months old now).

I enjoy my job. Yes, I have the financial need to work, but I also need the intellectual stimulation that my job provides.

Yet so many people think I should feel bad about working, or assume that I am not providing the best possible care for my baby. When did it become acceptable to work, but unacceptable to not feel bad about it?
