  • Why are there so many feral cats in my neighborhood all of a sudden?

In the last two years the feral cat population in my neighborhood has exploded and I can't figure out why. I've done research online and the general consensus is that a feral cat colony will grow around a food source. But that's just it, there can't been any new food source because nothing has has significantly changed in our neighborhood over the last few years. I live in a gated community with an active home owners association, everyone maintains their yards, no families have moved out of or into the neighborhood in the last three years, no owned cats have escaped or been lost, and nobody (at least they're not admitting it) is purposefully feeding the cats.

This issue came up at our meeting several months ago and everyone has been active in the spay/neuter and release program our city offers and hopefully that will be a viable long term solution. But, it's troubling that a feral colony can and just pop up, seemingly without a trigger. Considering the amount of time and effort everyone has put in to combat this problem, I don't want to see another sudden population explosion and have all our efforts wasted.

I'm trying to figure out why so many feral cats suddenly appeared and fix it. From speaking to my neighbors if another spike in cat population does occur the HOA will likely be unwilling to organize another TNR effort because our city's budget issues they have made the times/hours and availability of their Trap-Neuter-Release program extremely inconvenient. The HOA will probably vote to have them trapped and put down instead.

  • What will happen to the kittens if a feral cat is spayed during early pregnancy?

A young (under 1 year) feral cat gave birth about 3-4 weeks ago. She didn't look like she was able to take care of her kittens properly and I ended up discovering all 3 of them dead in my backyard last week. A day after I found the dead kittens, I see her waving her tail around a male feral cat in my neighbor's front yard so I trapped her and used my city's feral spay and release program to get her fixed.

However, what's going to happen to her if she is already pregnant? It never occurred to me that she might have been pregnant when I brought her in to the shelter so I'm wondering if the spaying process took care of any potential developing kittens or is she still going to give birth. I'd like to know in case she does have litter, I can be on the lookout for them and turn any kittens into the humane society for adoption rather than having then turn up dead in my yard again.

  • Buddhist reincarnation and Ancestor worship?

I've got a Vietnamese co-worker who celebrated the anniversary of his mother's death over the weekend. I know that this kind of thing is a common cultural practice. I also know that most Vietnamese are also Buddhists and believe in reincarnation. So, if most Vietnamese believe that deceased relatives have been reincarnated, why would there be a need to make offerings of food, money or clothes to the spirits of dead, especially if the spirit has been reincarnated and is now alive in the form of another person?

  • Where can I buy a 2010 Gold American Eagle Coin?

I'm looking to buy a single 1oz American Eagle Gold Coin. I'm not an investor, I just want to commemorate the year of son's birth. All the info I've found sounds like a retirement/money making pitch. I don't need or want to buy more than one coin. I live in the Bay Area, CA. Point me in the right direction.

  • what happens in an NFL game when no team scores during overtime overtime ?

if the game is a playoff game or the Superbowl. I know that teams can tie if nobody scored during OT, but is there a rule that address this unlikely possibility in the playoffs where a winner must be determined.

  • Tourism in Vietnam during the war?

I know Vietnam has recently emerged as popular tourist destination.

But I'm wondering how much tourism did Vietnam get during the war years. I'm talking about civilian tourists only not the thousands of soldiers who were sent by the army. Was it safe enough for the average tourist to come and visit. Or was it more like Iraq is now, only military personnel because visiting as a civilian would almost lead to certain death.

  • Basketball Drills?

So I signed up for a spring basketball league at work. I need some drills to improve my game before the season starts in about a month.

I'm fairly athletic so I play well but I've notice I'm slowing down and my youthful athleticism isn't enough anymore.

I want to improve defensive skills so any advice there will be helpful. I'm in pretty good overall shape but any basketball specific conditioning tips would be great too.

    Thanks

  • Saturday Night Live Question?

Ok, so its pretty common knowledge that sometimes a cast member will not any appearances on the show on any given week.

So, if a cast member doesn't have a part, does he still get paid?

Cause if the pay is still the same, wouldn't people start to route for their sketch to get cut and still get the paycheck without doing the work?

Also, does anyone know who much they get paid anyway?

  • California Concealed Weapons Permit?

I know the process of obtaining a CCW permit. I also know that California that is a "may issue" state and therefore what county you live will have a big impact on whether or not a permit will be issued.

To those of you who have been issued permits or have knowledge about how different counties treat CCW requests.

How difficult will it be for me to obtain a CCW permit?

I'm a corporate litigation attorney in San Francisco. I don't have any cases that requires me to visit prisons or interact with gang members. I know San Francisco will not issue CCW permits and luckily I don't live in San Francisco. I currently live in Santa Clara county, however, I will be moving soon. Most likely I will end up somewhere in San Mateo County.

Does any one know how CCW applications are treated in Santa Clara and San Mateo?

    Thanks

  • Which dog or dog bred is appropraite?

My wife and I have begun our search for a dog, however I'd appreciate some suggestions as to what bred of dog to get based on your circumstances. We haven't ruled out going to a shelter nor have we decided on a purebred but we like imput from anyone who knows a good bit about dog temperaments.

    Here are the considerations

    1) We live in suburbs with a medium sized backyard. Approximately 20 feet by 30 feet.

    2) We have a toddler and plan to have more children, so the dog has to be very well behaved, gentle, and preferably protective of the kid(s).

    3) My wife and I are both busy professions. We're gone during the weekdays but usually someone is home on the weekends.

    4) We prefer a small to medium sized dog, color and other aesthetic qualities are unimportant.

    Thanks

  • Advice about what guitar to buy?

First off, I'm buying a guitar for my brother's birthday. However, I'm not musically inclined at all so I don't know what to buy. Here are the facts.

    1) For my brother.

    2) He's been playing for 4 years and he's pretty good.

    3) He's started a college band recently, so I'm assuming he'll use the guitar I get for him in whatever gigs he gets.

    4) He currently has a fender stratocaster. Don't ask me what type it is cause I'm clueless. I can tell you its a brownish color.

    5) I've got money to spend so I'd like to get him something that is higher end so he can use for years to come.

    6) He mostly plays rock/punk stuff.

    Thanks

  • Please help me name this movie?

I’ve been trying to find the name of this particular movie and its been really bugging me. I originally saw it on network TV in the late 80s when I was 8 or 9 years old and since I was so young I could never see the end of the movie because it went past my bedtime.

    So here are the details

    1. Since the movie was on network TV in the late 80s so it was probably released in the mid 80s

    2. it was set in the middle ages or the dark ages

    3. the main character was a monk or friar of some type

    4. the main character also spoke with a british accent

    5. there was a mysterious book/tome involved

    6. anyone who read the book ended up dead

    7. the people who died had a black mark on their finger

This thing has been bugging me off and on for the last 17 years

  • unlocked phone is giving me problems -help?

I recently bought an unlocked slvr and put my t-mobile sim card inside. For some reason the phone shows cingular as the service provider when clearly I'm still under my t-mobile contract. Also my reception has noticeably decreased. I'm wondering if the specific phone I've got is defective or if reception with slvr in general is bad. Since t-mobile doesn’t offer the slvr as a phone option, could this be the reason for the problems I’m experiencing?

Any suggestions on what your past experience is greatly appreciated along with any thoughts on where I could go to have the phone checked out.
