How does my appeal letter to UIUC sound?
Hello, I am writing an appeal letter to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Chamapign. I m aware these rarely work, but I m willing to take the slim shot. What do you think? Are there any parts I can delete?
Upon receiving the disappointing news of being rejected to the University of Illinois for the Fall 2015 term, I feel it is necessary to submit this letter as a final attempt at being admitted. Throughout my high school career, I have struggled with grades, primarily my math and science courses that have dropped my GPA to an embarrassingly low 2.7. I decided to take a step and reach out to my teachers for help. I dedicated all the free time I could to my classes, printing out practice worksheets, and spent numerous days working with my teachers and older brother to raise my grades and GPA up to a current 3.5 and rising. While I still struggle my senior year juggling an honors Calculus course, two AP classes, and another science course, I have managed to maintain my high GPA and make honor roll.
As an undecided student, Illinois is one of the finer institutions because of its abundance of majors to choose from. I can be certain that at Illinois I will not be fearful of running out of choices.Being interested in possibly establishing a career in the forensic science field, the highly advanced laboratories at U of I are imperative should I decide to take that route. Along with a highly diverse atmosphere, various music programs such as the Marching Illini that satisfy my desire to improve my musical abilities, and small, yet focused class sizes, Illinois is an institution with plenty to offer its students to explore their dreams and interests.
I hope to do better than I have in previous years and I aspire to flourish into someone with strong morals, and efficient work and study habits. I respect the decision initially made, however I can not rest easy knowing I did not take all admission opportunities to the University of Illinois.
4 AnswersHigher Education (University +)6 years agoHow to write a strong admission appeal letter? Is it even worth it?
Recently, I was denied admission to attend my dream school, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have decided to compose an admission appeal letter.. I know it's a long shot. I know it's almost pointless to do so, but I can not rest easy until I know I took every admission opportunity possible. I've already contacted the admission office asking for the reasons I was denied. On the form they have for writing the letter, they've included:
"We will not consider the following in an appeal:
7th or 8th semester grades
New extra-curricular activities or awards
Test scores received by our office after February 12
Letters of recommendation"
If this were you writing an admission appeal letter, and you had been presented this information, what would you write?
Again, I'm fully aware this is a long shot. I know this is almost impossible. I believe I read somewhere admission appeal letters work about less than 5% of the time. But this is a risk I'm willing to take.
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)6 years agoWhat stylistic devices do you notice here?
I need help identifying some stylistic literary devices. I've counted a few here but I feel like I'm missing a few:
Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
“There will be other lives.
There will be other lives for nervous boys with sweaty palms, for bittersweet fumblings in the backseats of cars, for caps and gowns in royal blue and crimson, for mothers clasping pretty pearl necklaces around daughters' unlined necks, for your full name read aloud in an auditorium, for brand-new suitcases transporting you to strange new people in strange new lands.
And there will be other lives for unpaid debts, for one-night stands, for Prague and Paris, for painful shoes with pointy toes, for indecision and revisions.
And there will be other lives for fathers walking daughters down aisles.
And there will be other lives for sweet babies with skin like milk.
And there will be other lives for a man you don't recognize, for a face in a mirror that is no longer yours, for the funerals of intimates, for shrinking, for teeth that fall out, for hair on your chin, for forgetting everything. Everything.
Oh, there are so many lives. How we wish we could live them concurrently instead of one by one by one. We could select the best pieces of each, stringing them together like a strand of pearls. But that's not how it works. A human's life is a beautiful mess.”
1 AnswerWords & Wordplay6 years agoIs this too fancy for back to school?
I have this light blue, 3/4 length sleeved dress I bought and thought it'd be cute for school. I thought about pairing it with these heeled, black ankle boots since I looove shoes like them. The heels are only about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch high.. Do you think it's too much? The dress comes to just a bit past mid thigh and is light and flowy. Also, any ideas on what to accessorize with it ?
2 AnswersFashion & Accessories7 years agoWhat types of sample work to include when applying to work for a newspaper?
My city's big newspaper has a smaller "teen" version of their paper, run and written by teens themselves. I want to apply, but they ask for samples of stuff I've written before and everything I've written before has been for class. I don't consider myself a bad writer.. should I create something? And if so, what kinds of things? Stories, poems, fake articles? What would be the appropriate length?
1 AnswerMedia & Journalism7 years agoCalculating pressure? Pascals?
I need a bit of help figuring out this physics problem:
What is the pressure exerted on the ground by a 1,000 kg buffalo if each hoof has an area of 25cm^2 ?
The answer provided is given in Pascal form (1 x 10^6 Pa), but I don't know how to get there.
I know the equations needed are P = F/A & Pa = N / M^2, but I don't know how to use them properly. Any help?

1 AnswerPhysics7 years agoHow to wear a bright lipstick during daytime?
I love lipsticks, they're so fun to wear, but I'm never sure how to wear a bold lip during the day, you know for school. I have a new one, it's from the Revlon Super Lustrous line, and it's in 'Cherry Blossom.' It's sort of a red, but with very pink tones. It isn't the brightest lipstick ever, but definitely makes a statement. What should I wear, in terms of my other makeup, so that it's not too overwhelming? What about clothes-wise?
here's a swatch of it on someone else, just to get an idea of the color: http://pigmentedlips.com/2013/10/22/31-days-of-lip...
6 AnswersMakeup7 years agoHow to choose correct foundation shade?
My face is slightly darker than my neck and chest, which are pretty pale in color with yellow undertone. So I'm not quite sure how to pick out the correct foundation shade. The one I use currently matches more to my face than to my neck and chest.
Should I match it to my neck and chest or face? I feel like if I did that, you'd be able to tell. Or should I just visit a Sephora and ask them to match me?
6 AnswersMakeup7 years agoWhat size should I be?
I'm 16 years old, and am at a height of about 5'5". I weigh around 159-160 lbs.. im just curious what shirt size I should be? Is this considered fat? Do you think Me being a size large is fat?
2 AnswersDiet & Fitness8 years agoWhere to buy cheap leather jackets? (Not online)?
I'd really like one, but the ones that I find that are cheap can only be ordered online and the ones that I find in stores are too pricey for me.. Any ideas where I can find a cheap one? Even faux-leather?
4 AnswersFashion & Accessories8 years agoDoes this sound like a good outfit?
I'm headed back to school soon, and I'm doing some shopping. I haven't really decided what I want to wear on the first day, but here's what I'm thinking.
- A leather jacket
- A tank top underneath (any ideas on what color? I don't want this outfit to be too dark..)
- Black studded shorts
- some sheer tights; the ones with designs on them such as a flower vine wrapping around the leg, etc
- Heeled boots! I was thinking one's like this http://www.target.com/p/women-s-mossimo-supply-co-... in either black ro brown
As for jewelry, perhaps a gold necklace, a few goldish bracelets and a few rings.
Does this sound like it would work well together? I'm going for a bold, daring-ish look because clothing does have an impact on my mood, and on the first day I do want to feel confident and bold.
So what do you think?
1 AnswerFashion & Accessories8 years agoIf I have a yellow skin undertone, what shade of red lipstick should I use?
My skin has a light tan to it, and a yellow/warm undertone. I've always had problems finding the right shade with me that would look good. I want the color to be noticeable, but not be overwhelming. Any brands (drugstore kinds, please!) I should try?
6 AnswersMakeup8 years agoWhat makeup to wear with an outfit like this?
I'm attending a graduation this weekend, and I bought this elegant navy blue summer dress, with a thin brown belt across the waist, and a white, lacey type cardigan on top. I'm going to be pairing it with some red heels. What kind of makeup should I wear? I don't want to look like a clown. Something simple, yet elegant. I was thinking maybe a smokey eye, with some eyeliner, some natural looking false lashes (I've never used them before, and definitely want to try them out), a bit of bronzer, and a gentle pink lipstick (not magenta, something that looks like a natural lip color, just more enhanced).
Any ideas?
Also, any suggestions for a drugstore primer? My face gets super oily, and this ceremony is outside. I don't want to end up looking like a grease ball in photos.
4 AnswersMakeup8 years agoHow would you represent this poem?
I have to create a 3D model on my analysis of the poem 'Morning At The Window' by T.S Eliot. Thing is.. I'm not sure what to create. I think I understand the poem. I feel like it's just someone looking out at a poor village, Looking out at people trying to create comfort with what they have. I was thinking maybe something like this little village, with one person elevated and looking down. Maybe that's too weird? What do you think? Also, I have to carry this around on the bus through town, so it can't be anything too big..
1 AnswerPolls & Surveys8 years agoWhat to wear with a black maxi skirt for a formal occasion?
My school's band is having our annual Spring concert, and the attire is black and white. I have a black maxi length skirt to wear, but I'm not sure what shoes or top to wear. It has to be elegant, and cover my shoulders. Shoes should be elegant as well. Maybe some heels?
Thanks!
7 AnswersFashion & Accessories8 years agoWhat to wear with a flowy green skirt?
Since it's spring, it's time to bring out colorful outfits! I've got this bright green, flowy skirt I have. It has almost a lace pattern, and reaches to slightly above my knee. Any casual ideas on what to wear with it? Also, I'd like casual outfits and warm? It's still very cold over here (sadly).
6 AnswersFashion & Accessories8 years agoWill me not taking AP courses during junior year affect my chances of getting into good colleges?
I recently did programming for my junior year.. But, unfortunately, I was not eligible to take an AP class (just because recently my grade went from a B to a high C, after not doing so well on a quiz). So now, I'm back to taking all honors level courses. I'm just concerned that colleges won't accept me since I am taking no AP classes next year. What should I do? Should I be concerned?
Also, does it help if I go to a really good high school? According to a recent high school ranking, my high school is the 2nd best in Illinois. It's also a magnet school (don't know if that helps)
So, should I be worried about my chances with good colleges? If so, what should I do?
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)8 years agoHow long could I last without my retainer? Also, how to tell my parents?
I got my braces off last March, and since then I've been using my retainer. I've sadly lost my 2nd retainer (I feel horrible) but should be getting a new one soon.. Will any major movement be done o my teeth?
Also, as I mentioned.. I've lost my 2nd retainer. The first one broke, and this one I seem to have missplaced. Honestly, I feel horrible. Where I get my retainers, they're around $300, and when the 1st one was damaged, I felt like absolute crap when I told my parents and they had to spend money to get me a new one. Now, because of my carelessness, they'll have to do it again.. I really don't know how to tell them. Any advice? I'm most likely going to tell them tomorrow. But any ways to break it to them easily?
1 AnswerDental8 years agoHow do you dress down these dresses for everyday uses?
I have so many fancy dresses in my closet, and I'm tired of them just collecting dust. Is there anyway to dress them down? Here are the one's I think could be the most dressed down:
- Purple, spaghetti strapped dress; Sparkly, comes up to the knee, slightly poofy at the bottom, purple ribbon wraps around the waist
- Black sequined dress, also sleeveless. Reaches right around knee area
- This dress has champagne colored lace at the top and white ruffles at the botton, slightly poofy.
Is there a way to dress any of these down for everyday use, trying to keep it comfortable and casual, and appropriate for school and winter time?
