It's not just a name, it's a pleading request.

  • I want to mirror external hard drives for my mac, what's the best way?

I keep all of my data on a huge external hard drive. I have a new one that is the same brand, model, and capacity. I want to set things up so that always have 2 exact copies of my data on separate drives. I want to be able to add or modify files/folders on one of them and have those changes automatically made to the backup drive. Basically I want to maintain data redundancy without having to copy things manually. What's the best method + (affordable) software to do this? Thanks in advance.

  • How can i get this nasty funk out of my house?

About a week and a half ago i grilled up a bunch of chicken on a Foreman Grill, however i neglected to turn on the hood fan to suck up the smoke and steam.

Now the entire downstairs of my house smells absolutely wretched. I ve tried aerosol and powered oil air fresheners and they do nothing. I ve had the windows and doors open for a while, nothing.

I just ordered a bunch of incense with the idea that since the funk was created by smoke introducing a good smelling smoke might do the trick.

Does anyone know any tricks to get this nasty smell out of the house?

  • With an AWD car is it true that it s best to change all of your tires even if 2 are still in pretty good shape?

I ve been told by the shop that when you have to replace even one tire on an AWD vehicle you should replace all 4 because the imbalance of traction will screw up the slip differential.

Is this true or are they just trying to squeeze me for another nickle?

  • What s the best Wasp & Hornet removal, and protection method in my shed?

I have a small shed in the back of my home, i ve just been throwing junk in there and storing tools.

I want to get it cleaned up and make it a studio or workspace.

I ve seen vacant wasp nests in the shed, and i suspect there may be active wasp nests in there too, or worse.

I was considering placing a fogger in there and then quickly cleaning it up and using some kind of deterrent to keep bugs of all sorts. Ideas?

  • In the recent Hubble photo of Andromeda released, when zoomed to 100% are all those red and blue dots stars, or is it noise?

It's difficult to tell if it's just background photographic noise or if each one of those bright pixels is an individual star.

  • Christians: Why do you guys compare everything you don't like with Nazi Germany?

Perhaps not you in particular but the Christian Conservative pundits in the media, and authors. Every day you can find an example of someone comparing homosexuality, liberalism, atheists, etc. with Hitler or Nazism and implying (incorrectly and with much hyperbole) that these things necessarily lead to that type of society/behavior.

  • How can god sacrifice anything if he is incapable of loss?

Sacrifice means that you give something up, generally something that means a great deal to you, and you lose that thing forever.

It's said that God gave his son Jesus up for sacrifice on our behalf, but doesn't Jesus now sit at the right hand of God? Doesn't sound like any loss at all.

It's also said that Jesus gave himself up for sacrifice on our behalf, but when he died he didn't actually die... he came back and became as a god himself. It sounds a lot more like he gained 1000% by his "sacrifice."

Also, if God is omnipotent that implies that he is incapable of loss. If this is the case sacrifice is meaningless to him.

  • Christians: A Christian recently said "if the bible said that 2+2=5 I would believe it."?

Do you agree? Do you think that if the bible said that 2+2=5 you would regard that as an absolute fact and then do what you had to do to make it work in the real world?

Also, regardless of if you do or don't, do you realize how stupid this is?

  • What does it mean if someone continues eating without switching their fork hand?

I'm preparing for an audition and in my sides it says someone at my table is doing this while i'm seemingly trying to excuse myself from the table, the setting is Great Brittan in the 1700s. Is this something my character would be offended by, would it simply be a sign that i'm not yet welcome to excuse myself, is it a status play (my character is higher status than the one eating), perhaps something else entirely?

Any help is welcome, i have no idea how to take this. In the script he relents and continues conversation if that helps.

  • If you're submitting a video audition and have more than one interpretation of the character...?

is it helpful to submit both interpretations to show range, or would that hurt your chances? Is it just best to try and intuit which one is most appropriate and just submit the one?

    Thanks.

  • Why is this used as justification for 10 commandments monuments?

There are a number of 10 commandments monuments on public ground, a violation of church state separation, usually in front of a courthouse. From time to time someone attempts to challenge the legality of these structures and it becomes headline news. When this happens someone always uses some version of this particular argument in support of the monuments existence:

"In America our laws are based in the Judeo-Christian tradition/10 commandments, so it's ok to have a reminder outside the courthouse."

    1) No, our laws are NOT based on the Judeo-Christian tradition.

    2) Nor are our laws based on the 10 commandments

    3) Of the 10, there are only 3 that have any resemblance to anything in our legal system (Murder, Theft, and Perjury).

    4) The three that are handled in some way by our laws are common to all known communities ever.

Do people who use this argument even realize how wrong they are? It makes me wonder if these people even know the 10 commandments.

  • Theists: Why is the suffering standard not a better basis for morality than God?

Theists, mainly Christians, often say atheists can't have a basis for morality because they don't believe in god and god is the origin of morality... I disagree.

I put it to you that atheists have a much better basis for morality and it goes like this:

    - Morality is the measure of what we consider degrees good/right and bad/wrong

    - All human beings (and most other life forms) have the ability to experience suffering.

    - All human beings agree that not suffering is preferred over suffering.

    - If all humans can experience suffering and agree that not suffering is preferred over suffering then all humans can agree that to cause suffering is bad/wrong, and to reduce suffering is good/right.

Therefore the basis of morality is the degree to which an action causes or relieves suffering.

This is a better system of morality than the theistic one because god supposedly has a will and this means that morality is subjective (ie. god can make anything he wants to morally right or wrong for any reason or no reason at all). The suffering standard of morality however has a consistent basis by which to compare actions as preferable/good/right, and not preferable/bad/wrong. It can also be applied to anything on a case by case basis whereas theistic morality is subject to an arbitrary set of predefined rules.

Can you agree that the suffering standard is both valid and better than the theistic standard?

Why or why not? Please be thorough in your answers.

  • Rhythmic thumping from one wheel?

I drive an 03 outback, today I suddenly noticed a rhythmic thumping coming from the front driver side wheel. I can hear a thump sound accompanied by thump I can feel in the steering wheel. I only start to hear/ feel this when I go over 30mph and the frequency gets faster as speed increases. I feel it worse when I steer left and less/not at all when I steer right. The tire seems fine, enough pressure no visible defects. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks!

  • God's existence scientifically proven?

If God actually exists that is a statement of fact and aught to be testable scientifically. So if you say God exists can you provide a condition that has the potential to falsify that claim?

If your answer is yes, what is that condition and how would we test it against the conditions that support the existence of God.

If your answer is no, then what you are saying is that since the claim is not testable then we have no way of knowing with any degree of certainty that it is true. Therefore how can you know it to be true if it can't be tested. Faith doesn't count, faith is not knowledge, faith is the excuse people give to continue believing things that they can't actually know.

  • Theists: Doesn't outside the universe/time etc. an admission that god is nonexistent?

In trying to justify the problems of our not being able to detect gods existence theists will often say things like "God is outside of the universe" or "God is timeless/outside of time."

Since the universe encompasses all that exists, and all events are temporal, wouldn't these statements themselves be a roundabout admission that god doesn't actually exist, or is unable to interact with us in any way, including miracles & creation? And wouldn't any attempt to justify otherwise be considered a fallacy of special pleading?

I find that theists often say things to justify the existence of their god without considering what these statements actually mean.

  • Christians: Why do you complain so much that the culture is out to change you while at the same time...?

making every effort to impose your worldview on the rest of society?

There are mission boards out there who's sole purpose is to send people around the world to attempt to convert entire cultures to Christianity. When people merely suggest that you should get with the times and join in the progress of the human race it's met with nothing but venom tongued backlash. The likes of Bryan Fischer, Ken Ham, Pat Robertson and the like are speaking rather loudly on behalf of all of you. Double standard much?

  • I played D&D last night! How many of you still think it's demonic?

Yeah, sitting around a table and drinking beer while making jokes about Nicholas Cage movies and using your imagination and doing math with dice is obviously how one opens a portal to hell.

  • Do you think god hates us because we're a reminder of his imperfection?

He seems like a real egomaniac from his book. He's clearly not perfect... far from it in fact, and yet he insists on being referred to as a perfect being and praised for his 'glory.' I mean, he made US and we're super flawed... would a perfect being create anything that is less than perfect? No's what i say... He says he created everything perfect in the beginning but something fouled it up. Well, if he created EVERYTHING then and SOMETHING fouled it up, then clearly his creation was less than perfect.

From that point on we've been nothing but a constant reminder of his own failures and thus, he visits disasters upon us from time to time just to make him feel better about himself... Weird dude, huh?
