  • My son is attending a Thanksgiving dinner at GLBT church instead of home.?

Am i wrong to feel hurt and rejected? Is there something i can say or do? Have I not been as supportive as i should? We are very supportive and understanding of our son and it really hurts that he chooses to spend the day instead with the church, I understand this is a dinner held to make family for those without family at the holidays. I understand these are his friends. I don't understand why he cab't come for even an hour or why he lied about having to work. Thanksgiving is more important to me than Christmas, besides at Christmas it seems everyone is more scattered. Am I selfish to want to see all my family together for just a couple of hours?

  • Should my granddchild be tested for speech therpy or wait until school?

My granddaughter just turned 5; a month earlier and she's be in kindergarten. Now she stays with us. Her speech is almost completely unintelligible. I've raised my kids and her sisters and I've taught school, so I know the difference between baby talk and "what did she say?" For example, something that sounds like pillah can mean pillow, playdoh, puzzle, pizza or powder. Her language is entirely like that. I read up on speech impediments and the articles say the children are more likely to be bullied, have low grades, low self-esteem, get funneled into special ed even if they are intellectually able to do the work and that the later the intervention, the harder it will be. If she had been able to start school in August, she would have been able to get help. I need to know if schools provide help under the Americans with Disabilities Act for pre-schoolers or if there is financial assistance for going to a private therapist. I am retired and can't pay, and my daughter, a single mother, has some insurance, but not very good and works as a waitress and goes to school- thus the free grandma day care.

  • Facebook help- embarrassed to ask my kids?

Ok, I admit, I'm from the pre-computer generation and I need some help w/FB:

    1. How do I change my name on the profile? I want to add my maiden name so old friends can find me. I could change everything else on my profile but that.

    2. How do I get the comments to post? I type them in but when I get back, they're gone.

    3. When I share, why does it sometimes go to my timeline and sometimes my wall?

    4. How do I add to my timeline- places I've lived, things I've done?

Thanks for not ridiculing this old Boomer and helping me out.

  • What is the difference between a Bb clarinet and an E11 clarimet?

Need to know for band purchase. It seems the Bb is cheaper and the ads all say this is an approved instrument, but the letter from the school says to get an E11 which I've found to be three times as much. Is there a difference in quality of sound or fingering or are they just being picky?

  • They want a destination wedding, is this selfish?

My son and his fiance want to have a destination wedding. It will cost close to $3000 for my husband and me to go, and we don't have that kind of money. My other son and my daughter can't afford it either. Basically, her family is well off. I really want to see him get married, but I don't think I should be obligated to go into debt for it. Do you think they are being selfish by expecting everyone to drop all this money on their wedding? Am I wrong in not wanting to go into debt to go to the wedding, which is in a place I don't want to go anyway, plus I really don't like to fly. We were planning to give them cash for their honeymoon (we haven't told them). Is it wrong to say we will give them the honeymoon if they have the wedding locally so everyone can attend? I think it would make more sense.

  • Dog owners, help with house breaking.?

I can't get my eight-month-old dachshund to poo outside. She'll go out and then come right in and poo on the carpet. I've tried crate training, punishment, rewards; nothing seems to help. She knows she's done wrong because when I catch her she goes running to the back door.

  • I'm retired and bored?

I thought retirement would be so great, but I am so bored. The things I was aching to do when I was working don't interest me now. All my friends were from my job. The only people I see are my daughter and my grandkids (when she wants me to babysit). I don't want to do my crafts, clean house (blah) and I've read so much I can't remember what I've read. I don't want to volunteer or get a part-time job because I've had some health issues and don't know from day to day how I'll feel. It's been six months. Any one else feel that retirement is not what it's cracked up to be? Or how I can get out of these doldrums?

  • Punctuation and spelling please?

What has happened to spelling and punctuation such as i instead of I, shell instead of she'll and so on? Some of the postings I've seen are so poorly spelled, I don't even understand what someone is trying to say. There is a spell check, why don't people use it? Are we becoming a nation of functional illiterates, led to ignorance by the siren lure of the almighty text messaging? No wonder people in other countries laugh at Americans, our postings on the internet lead them to view us as an educated society of morons who can't even communicated in our own native tongue.

  • Problems with elderly mother?

I just really need to vent, rather than asking advice. For the last two years, my elderly and ill mother has been living with my unemployed, down and out, ex-con brother (or rather the other way around, her house, her money, so on). He has supposedly been her caretaker- she even bought him a car although she doesn't drive. It has not been a good situation; they're always fighting, he calls her names, and for the last year she says he has been threatening to kill her. My siblings and I have called the police but she won't press charges because she is afraid he will hurt her and that he will go back to jail. Things got really bad two weeks ago and she moved into assisted living, which with her health, she really needs. She needs to sell the house for her income, but doing so would cause him to have to move out. Here's the problem: one day she wants to sell the house and has me working on it, the next day (I think after bro calls her and whines) she doesn't. Yeah. he's living in the house, rent-free, all utilities paid, car and insurance paid for and I'm sure when he runs out of food, she'll buy it for him. Everyone in the family is fed up with this. I am the one who has taken care of her, listened to her problems, never got a penny in return, or expected one, moved her possessions for her, and I feel like I'm being kicked in the teeth for trying to help. My brother has even bashed me on the internet when he's the one taking advantage. I can't stand to see my mother being taken advantage of like this and I don't know what she's going to do when the money runs out. We have all tried to help her, even her lawyer told her what to do.

It's not so much the decision as what to do about the house and brother etc., it's the vacillating from day to day. I feel torn up.

No advice, please, I know what SHOULD be done, and so does her lawyer. Like I said, just need to vent. Does anyone know a good website maybe where I can get in touch with others with my problem?

By the way, my daughter was diagnosed with lupus today. I feel like I need to take care of my mother but my daughter really needs me too.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this. It feels good just to get this out of my system.

  • Sunscreen needed for dark skin?

My granddaughter is half Hispanic. She doesn't burn, she just tans deeper. But I wonder if she still needs sunscreen as far as future cancer prevention goes. I've always heard that blue-eyed blonds are the most susceptible, but what about naturally dark-skinned people. Maybe a dermatologist or someone who is Hispanic can answer.

  • Wholesale supplier for beads?

My husband and I would like to start a little business making and selling jewelry but buying the beads and findings at the craft store would give very little profit. How do I go about finding wholesale dealers?

  • Why are students destructive?

I know the question is a generalization, but as a teacher, I find so many students cannot seem to exist without ruining things. I have spent several hundred dollars on bulletin board materials over the years and I liked to create fun and Information bulletin boards for my students. Now I don't put anything on the walls because kids write on everything, tear up stuff and otherwise destroy it. Our class books are full of pictures of penises and vaginas and other kinds of filth. They write on the desks. They write on the walls (and I can't get my classroom painted unless I do it). They write on the carpet. They write on the posters. They take the staples out of the bulletin board and use them to poke each other. They make paper airplanes with the staple in the tip and poke each other or throw them into the ceiling. Paper wads, spitballs....and the custodians do not pick up paper. I have to, or live with it.

I teach high school in a middle-class community. I really like teaching. I just don't understand how a kids cannot manage to sit in a classroom for more than 10 minutes without writing on, or tearing up, the things around them.

Students, why? Didn't anybody teach you to keep your hands off other people's property?
