  • How does the random function work?

I have a rough understanding of how computers get random numbers between x and y. First off, you take the use the random function, and multiply it by the difference between x and y, then you add the smaller number. Finally you turn it into an interger (chop of all the stuff after the decimal point). But for this to work, you need the random function. How does the computer get a random decimal number between 0 and 1? Computers in themselves are not random machines. They do exactly what you tell them to. They can't just come up with random things without previous instruction.... yet they do. How do?

  • Is it possible to find the area between y = 1/x, the x axis and the y axis in the first quadrant?

I was watching Vsauce's video on supertasks (you can watch it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffUnNaQTfZE). He states that it is theoritcally possible to have an object with finite volume (i.e. a cake) but infinite surface area. (If you can keep on cutting the cake in half to get more surface area.) I was wondering if the same was possible for 2 dimensional objects. The curve, 1/x has infinite length. But does it enclose a finite area?

I was thinking similarly to how if Tn (the nth term) = 1/(2^(n-1)) then S∞(the sum of infinity terms) = 2. Perhaps the same thing can happen to 1/x?

  • Misandry or Misogyny?

So I work casually, as a shelver in a Library. In this library, the permanant staff is entirely female except for the head librarian who is male. Is this Misandry or Misogyny?

  • Are Buddhists Atheists?

So you got Buddhism. They don't really believe in a god of sorts. Buddhism is about karma and shakra and that stuff right?

Atheist means no god... so are Buddhists atheists?

  • Born gay or not?

I am not trying to say that some people can choose to be gay or not. I just believe that your sexual orientation can be affected by your environments as you grow up. However you may disagree.

If you do then how does the "gay gene" get transmitted? Does the same mistake in genetic code get continually repeated? Do surrogate mothers carry babies with a gay gene?

I'd really like to know more about why people think others are born gay.

  • What is the name of this book?

I read this book some time ago and I'd like to know what the name of it was.

It was about this kid between the end of High School and the beginning of University. He comes into a dispute with his father who is in the advertising industry. His dispute is that the advertisers have a really easy job and he takes this up by taking on a toothpaste advertisement.

His first ad is where archaeologists find a mummy with white teeth. They wonder how he has such white teeth and the answer is the toothpaste. It had already been done and won an award. So he tries for a second time.

His second ad is about how people of the future still use the advertised toothpaste and in his excitement he goes and talks to his dad. However he finds that his dad has come up with the same idea. So he tries again.

His final attempt was cobbled together on the day before he was due to show his ad. He sat on a crate and merely said "Toothpaste... It cleans your teeth" and then fell over laughing. He gets the job

I believe there are some sub plots but I have forgotten what they are. Do you know what the book is called?

  • Maths test controversy?

So I had a maths test today and one of the questions was sqrt(p^2)/|p| (to those who can understand it).

There was a bit of debate as to the answer. I thought it was 1, -1 while others thought it was just 1. What was the correct answer?
