For decades, experimenters at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) have been conducting cruel and useless taxpayer-funded "sound localization" studies in which cats have steel coils implanted in their eyes, holes drilled into their skulls, and electrodes implanted in their brains. Sometimes, cats used in this experiment have had their ears cut off or are intentionally deafened by having a toxic chemical applied to their inner ear. The cats are then deprived of food for several days in order to coerce them to look in the direction of sounds during experimental sessions in which their heads are immobilized by a bolt screwed into their skulls.

Internal UW documents and photographs obtained by PETA in response to a successful lawsuit detail the miserable life and death of one of the cats, a gentle tabby named Double Trouble, who was abused and killed in this barbaric experiment. In one instance, Double Trouble woke up while experimenters were cutting into her head. Following a series of invasive surgeries, she developed infections, became lethargic and depressed, started to twitch, and suffered paralysis in half her face. After UW deemed the experiment a failure, the experimenters killed and decapitated Double Trouble so that they could examine her brain.

Experimenters have justified the use of 30 cats like Double Trouble per year in this cruel project not by saying that it would enhance human health but by stating that they needed to "keep up a productive publication record that ensures our constant funding."

Shockingly, the federal government continues to support this irrelevant and deadly project and has provided UW with more than $3 million in grant money to abuse animals—even though researchers at other institutions around the world are already using modern methods with human volunteers to investigate how the brain locates and processes sound.

PETA has called on federal officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding Double Trouble's horrendous treatment and take disciplinary action against UW for likely violations of federal animal welfare laws. n October 12 and 13, the city of Yellville is holding its annual Turkey Trot Festival, during which an illegal event known as the "Turkey Drop" historically takes place. This event involves the hurling of wild turkeys—who typically fly only short distances, rarely reaching 100 feet high—from private planes traveling around 70 miles per hour and at altitudes of around 1,000 feet! Disoriented and unable to right themselves, most birds plummet like bricks, fatally crashing onto buildings, cars, and the street. This event violates Arkansas anti-cruelty laws which state that "a person commits the offense of cruelty to animals if he or she knowingly subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment" as well as the Federal Aviation Administration Code which states that "[n]o pilot in command of a civil aircraft may allow any object to be dropped from that aircraft in flight that creates a hazard to persons or property." PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of direct participants, and we need your voice!

Ontario legislators are considering Bill 69—the Elephant Protection Act—which would spare elephants living in or traveling through Ontario from being beaten with bullhooks and spending hours on end in chains.

This important bill, which passed a second reading, would prohibit the use of bullhooks, electric prods, and other devices specifically designed to cause elephants pain as well as the use of chains or ropes to keep elephants restrained.

Bill 69 would also improve public safety. Captive elephants who are managed with chains and bullhooks often become stressed and unpredictable. Frustrated by years of beatings, bullhooks, and shackles, and denied everything that is natural and important to them, some elephants snap and cause human injuries and deaths as well as property damage.

PETA Pushes U.S. Fast-Food, Grocery, and Poultry Industries to Adopt Less Cruel, More Profitable Method of Chicken and Turkey Slaughter

Electric immobilization, the conventional method of slaughter in North American poultry slaughterhouses, causes an array of animal welfare, economic, and worker-safety problems. The process involves dumping and shackling live birds, running them through an electrically charged bath of water to immobilize them, slitting their throats with a machine, and defeathering them in tanks of scalding-hot water.

Since 2002, PETA has been urging major food retailers, such as McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Kroger, Safeway, and Wal-Mart, as well as the nation's largest poultry producers—including Butterball, Tyson, and Pilgrim's Pride—to switch from electric immobilization to controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK).

Electric-immobilization systems require that birds be handled and processed while they are still alive and conscious, which causes them great suffering:

Birds endure bruised and broken wings and legs and can suffocate when they are dumped and shackled.

Frustrated workers often commit gratuitous acts of abuse and have been documented tearing live birds apart, spitting tobacco in their eyes, spray-painting their faces, stomping on them, punching them, kicking them, and even sexually assaulting them. Electric current levels are too low to render birds insensible to pain, and all birds are conscious as their throats are slit.
