  • How does natural selection lead to evolution? It's such a big jump.?

Please read the entire thing, I know it's long.

So I understand how natural selection works (basically "survival of the fittest"). Mutations during reproduction causes good, neutral, or bad traits. Those with bad traits die off, and those with good traits are more adapted to their environment and will more likely produce offspring. Over long periods of time, a species can change, BUT NOT EVOLVE, and look extreme different from their original form. For instance, the birds on the Galapagos Islands changed according to natural selection when their beaks were observed to be of different sizes to adapt to environment changes.

However, does this process (natural selection) over time produce new species, and thus allow all the organisms on Earth to evolve? When I learned about natural selection and evolution in high school biology, the teacher went over the sections pretty quickly. Intuitively, it makes sense for natural selection to cause evolution, and at the time I thought it made alot of sense. However, the two are extremely different. Natural selection is just the tendency for favorable traits to occur within a species over time to adapt.

Evolution is the creation of new species. A lot of scientists nowadays use evolution on a macro scale to explain how the first microorganisms evolved in a gene pool on a Titan-like Earth, and this gene pool produced the first tiny organsims, evolving into fish, which then evolved into lizard things that can breath on land, which then evolved into dinosaurs, mammals, and and eventually apes, monkeys, chimpanzees, and the holy grail - the Homo Sapien.

But something that doesn't make sense to me is that how can new species arise at all from natural selection? A species is when two individuals can mate with one another and produce offspring that can also reproduce. For instance, two tigers are a species because they can reproduce a baby tiger that can grow up and mate to produce or tigers. A tiger and a lion however, are not the same species because "ligers" (google liger if you don't know what it is) cannot produce more liger offspring.

Using the birds on the Galapagos Islands, just because the birds developed different sized beaks does not mean that evolution happened, only natural selection. Over thousands of years, how does the birds evolve? Today, we have hawks, bald eagles, falcons, blackbirds, pigeons; all of which probably "evolved" from a single common ancestor. But how did this initial evolution come about? According to natural selection, shouldn't all birds with a common ancestor today be able to mate with one another? Just because a bird evolved bigger wings and turned into a bald eagle doesn't mean its reproductive systems changed; just because a bird developed a smaller body for speed doesn't mean it can't reproduce with the original species. The bird will have to develop a new reproductive system that is unable to produce viable offspring with the original species of birds to make it a new species. Do you know what I mean?

Basically, I've heard alot of people explain evolution by simply saying a species can have good mutations within its gene pool that cause it to change to survive. Over time, these "changes" caused by natural selection build up, and different groups of the initial population can split up and evolve into new species. But the problem with this explanation is that changes in the gene pool does not create new species, even with time. Even if a group develops newer wings or different skin colors or skinnier legs does not mean that new species will arise over time. That is why all humans on Earth, no matter what their skin color, can produce viable offspring with one another. For humans, natural selection has occurred, but evolution hasn't.

  • If China is a communist system, then how come people still buy and sell stocks there?

Capitalism is basically private ownership of property and assets right? So people are free to do whatever they wish with their capital. Shareholders can buy and sell a company's assets and stuff. and everything holds by the laws and supply and demand. America's a great example.

So if the government in China owns everything because of communism, then how come people in China still invest, buy/sell, and exchange goods and services? Prices of food and products still rise and fall with the public's demand....so what makes China communist/socialist rather than capitalist if it their economic system still retains so many of capitalistic characteristics?

  • A math/physics AP problem...?

    A motorcyclist who is moving along an x axis has an acceleration given by a = (6.1 - 1.7t) m/s^2 for t = 0 to 6.0 s. At t = 0, the velocity and position of the cyclist are 2.2 m/s and 7.3 m.

What total distance does the cyclist travel between t = 0 and 6.0 s?

the max speed is 13.119 m/s, i know this to be true

  • HELP NEEDED! RIGHT NOW! My dad keeps calling this other woman on the phone when my mom's out. What do I do??!!?

He has been calling this woman for like 3 months now, ever since he came back from Canada (I live in Maryland, US). I think he met her there or something. He's calling her constantly whenever my mom's out or she's asleep or something. I heard him calling last night at 1:00 AM! He's even calling right now at this minute. What do I do?? to stop him?!

This is wrong and can everyone give me some ideas what to do besides telling my mom face to face?

I thought about cutting the phone line or calling my friends whenever he tries to call.

    Any other ideas?

    1. A car travels 1 mile at 45 miles per hour. What must its average speed be for the next mile in order to average 60 miles per hour for the 2 miles? (Hint: the answer is not 75.)

    2. A fish has 3 parts: head, body, and tail.

The tail is as long as its head plus a quarter the length of its body. Its body was 3/4 of it's total length. If its head was 4 cm long, what is the entire length of the fish?
