  • When cooking chicken soup, is it necessary to cook the chicken in two stages to make the soup cleaner?

When cooking chicken soup, is it necessary to cook the chicken first by itself for a while in one pot, and then move it to a separate pot of boiling water so the broth can be "cleaner"? why or why not

  • How much money earned in stocks before it has to be reported?

I only made about $12 in stocks this year (well actually I lost money because of the wire transfer fee) and I'm wondering if I'm required to report it in tax which would be a pain.

My TOTAL income is definitely over the threshold, and I have to report my normal wages. But I'm not sure if I have to report my stock earnings.

  • BICYCLE or kiddy push-SCOOTER for 0.75 miles commute?

BICYCLE or kiddy push-SCOOTER to where I will commute 0.75 miles 1 way 2-4 times per day? Cost is a non-issue because the accessories that I'd need to buy for bike approximately equal the cost of a well-functioning adult-usable kid scooter ("razor style" with bigger wheels) . Walking is out of the question because the time benefit from bike or scooter is too great to ignore.

    Bike cons:

-Higher overhead (need to walk to where it is, need to lock/unlock each time, razor only need to fold and carry around)

-More moving hassle (strap bike to car and bring bike accessories, as opposed to bring one small thing)

-Slightly higher maintenance (higher chance of parts failure, need to pump tires)

-Somewhat dangerous/suboptimal on roads/paths shared with pedestrians

    Scooter cons:

    -Slower than bike

-Increased carrying load when not in use (razor needs to be carried in backpack and kept a close eye on at all times, bike only needs helmet and locks in backpack)

-Perhaps higher chance of being stolen if I don't keep an eye on it (bicycle will be locked correctly)

-Slightly more dangerous at dusk due to lack of head/rear lamps

  • how to check car tire pressure without releasing air?

Whenever I use my pressure gauge to check my car tires I will fail about 2-5 times before I finally get a good solid seal for a reading, and every time I fail it hisses a little bit because the alignment was a tiny bit off and every time it hisses I lose a bit of air pressure. So by the end of it when I have finally conducted a good measurement, the air pressure might be several PSI below what it started as! What is the point of checking tire pressure with my pressure gauge if no matter what I do it will release some air? Do I need a new gauge? Does my gauge suck? Do I need a different style of pressure gauge? Am I doing it wrong? Should I just use the gas station gauge? Do I even need to check my tire gauge by myself instead of just letting maintenance handle it once every few months?

  • Is the diablo 3 real-money auction house up; if so what is the exchange rate?

Hi, I'm on my work computer don't have access to diablo 3 right now. Is the diablo 3 (US Normal Server) real-money auction house up? if so what is the current exchange rate (of how many US dollars per how many golds)?

Has that exchange rate been steady or fluctuating?

Is there a online resource to check the exchange rate without needing to launch diablo 3?

  • why are people not concerned about hearing loss from guns as a self-defense weapon?

Now, this question might sound a bit retarded a first. You'd rather be alive with bad hearing than be dead, right? But please listen. The impulse noise generated by a gun is very dangerous to hearing and can create permanent hearing loss after just 1 or 2 shots. California law outlaws supressors (I don't know why). The suppressors can reduce the noise emitted by a gun from 140 db to a passable 120 db, so that innocent people can defend their own lives without risking hearing loss, but unfortunately this is not an option in California. Then there are tasers, which are very quiet but have very limited range and won't always stick to the guy, plus they're limited to one shot. Then there's pepperspray which barely does anything except make it hard for the person to see, if you spray it right, but they have a risk of getting into your own eyes as well, not to mention the guy might still charge you and beat the crap out of you. And a knife is close-range only.

So we are in an unfortunate circumstance such that the firearm is literally the only reliable self-defense weapon in the world. And that the firearm makes so much noise that you can lose hearing after just 1 or 2 shots. Most people probably wouldn't care, because the difference might not be too bad and you can still hear conversations; hell the difference might not even be noticeable to them; but what about musicians and sound engineers which comprise a pretty good portion of the world? My line of work and hobby requires that I have good hearing. To me, a reduced capacity to hear high frequencies would be about as crippling as having my legs broken. Not to mention if you have to use the gun in a bedroom or something it WOULD cripple your hearing significantly. And it does matter a lot to certain people. Imagine if instead of damaging your ears each shot of a pistol broke your legs. Would people still be saying "Well why are you so worried that it's breaking your legs; at least it's saving your life"?

  • What's that cartoon with a woodpecker and caterpillar in one scene?

I can barely remember flashes of a scene of this cartoon. I saw it between 12-20 years ago.

There's a woodpecker pecking in the hole of a tree and a caterpillar (or squirrel, or something, but probably a caterpillar) dodges the pecks by contorting its body side to side. Then the caterpillar escapes and the woodpecker or some other animals chase it across an electric power line and at some point someone or some birds or the caterpillar get shocked very dramatically while atop one of those wooden towers that hold up the power lines.

  • Legal to roll through metered light (California)?

PLEASE READ THE QUESTION CAREFULLY: Is it legal to treat those metered lights before freeway entrances as "normal traffic lights" and basically roll through slowly, crossing the line as it turns green and never coming to a full stop? Or should the metered traffic lights be treated as a "stop sign" and I am required to fully stop before I cross, no matter what, even if the light turned green?

I'm takling about the lights that just go red to green to red, wait 5 seconds, repeat, letting one car pass every 5 seconds, before merging on the freeway.

  • Why did the woman need to be saved from the fire?

    In this article http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/04/newark_ma...

I'm really confused. A mayor saves a woman from a fire. But I don't understand the "rescue". He goes in, carries her on his back, and goes out. Was she disabled and unable to walk? Was she paralyzed with fear and would have preferred to stay in her bedroom and burn to death than at least try to escape and preserve her own life? What is it about the situation that necessitated an outside rescue mission by a regular civilian, as opposed to the girl just running outside the house on her own?

  • Is it illegal to forge a document that I rightfully own?

My parents are withholding my social security card from me but I need to make a copy of it to send to the online stock broker company to verify my social security number (it is a law that they have to follow).

Is it illegal to just make a photoshop version that would basically look exactly the same as if I took a copy of my actual social security card? It is MY OWN social security card but my parents have it hidden in an unknown location.

If it is illegal, please explain why it is illegal. In my mind, what I'm trying to do is no different from forging my own signature.

  • polyisoprene vs latex vs lambskin condoms?

Which provides the best FEELING like you're wearing nothing

I am not interested in a lecture about how lambskin can't block STI's so please do not even discuss it; I only need to know about which one feels better.

I do not need a lecture about how lambskin does not protect against STI's; I would like an honest answer that tells me which one feels more natural, from someone who has tried BOTH only, please. If you have not tried both please do not answer.

  • Dual wield tasers in real life?

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about the option of dual-wielding tasers in real life? Dual-wielding means one in each hand.

You know, the real tasers that shoot the barbs out and electrocute the guy. They only have one shot, and they have very low recoil, so why don't people just buy two so they can have one in each hand should the need ever arise, especially in a MULTIPLE ATTACKER SITUATION?

  • Judo discussion: Need a good counter to osoto-gari from very tall guy?

Guy much taller than me (about a head or two heads taller) always gets me with osoto-gari. Need effective counter. In the past Tani Otoshi has worked, but now it doesn't work anymore because my right leg is always stuck behind his right leg and when I try Tani Otoshi what ends up happening is I fall on my back and ippon myself!

    Do not suggest:

-Counter osoto with osoto: Does not work on tall people

-Counter osoto with sasae tsuri komi ashi: Does not work on tall people

-Hop backwards in a circle for harai goshi, or get my leg(s) out: He frequently gets BOTH of my legs with the osoto because his legs are like twice as long as mine

    I am considering:

-Wrestling style suplex (get low, pick him up completely, throw him backwards)

-Drive my right knee carefully into the groove of his right leg which brings him to his knees (has worked once)

    -Somehow a modified tani otoshi?

Comments and suggestions please. Preferably from people who have sparred with ultra-tall people.

  • Orchestral percussion (tamtam): How to notate the swipe tamtam sound?

There's a sound that cliché Hollywood uses a lot, it sounds like someone taking a metal stick and running it across the big tamtam... I believe that's what it is... Can someone tell me what is the standard way to notate that or indicate it to the percussion player?

  • how to notate "spiccato" on string instruments?

I want the hollywood pirates of the caribbean sound where they repeatedly play short, accented notes in a pattern.

Spiccato seems to be the one.

Is this thing on the left http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Spiccato_%28muzy... correct?

I have scoured the internet and wikipedia is the only site that claims that spiccato is represented thus. Most people say to just say "****"
