  • Gorden Brown constituency- what did a rival candidate's sign say?

Flash Gorden had some fairly stiff competition in his constituency, it is safe to say. how on earth did he win when he didn't even bother hold his fist in the air throughout the announcement (which I felt was a poor show on his part) nor did he wear a flourescent jacket for no apparent reason. Standards Gorden; get some. Anyways, the chap in the flouro (ukip?) was holding up a sign on A4 paper whichthe beeb resolutely did not show... Don't suppose anyone managed to read it did they? I'm dying to know what it said. Perhaps "only pricks wear shades indoors...at night"

  • How have ancient texts [Herodotus etc] come to us?

How exactly is it that these original sources survive?

Obviously, we don't have many of the original texts, like the dead sea scrolls, but have copes of copies etc

But I'm trying to research the exact paths various historical sources took on their way from 500 BC to 2010 AD

Is there a word for this? Or does anyone have any tips or website recs?

  • Book titles involving Clothes?

Can anybody think of a reasonably well known book title involving clothing?

such as the devil wears prada and the sisterhood of the travelling pants.

Its for a not very funny joke involving 'borrowed' jumpers being given their own fcebook pages.

Well, my accomplices and myself have all denied any knowledge of them

so we thought it would be quite funny to make it blatantly obvious that we do.

  • Band Names involving clothing?

I am trying to think of as many, reasonably well know bands, that have clothing themed names.

    Like "The Cardigans"

OR songs like "blue suede shoes" and so on.

It's for an elaborate and not particulary funny joke my friends and i are playing on a boy who's jumpers we've borrowed and neglected to return.

...We've made them a facebook page, complete with photo's of said jumper's watching TV [posed using bent coathangers etc]

...what can i say, we've got nothing else to do all summer...

  • Freedom of speach.?

    Why should speach be free?

liken it to a limb. You may do as you please with your hands [ooh er] theoretically. But you cannot, legally, steal with them or kill someone with them. So they are not free.

Just the same with speach. Why why should you be allowed to say something that would wound or cause harm?

I dont mean saying things like

"Nobody likes you and you are ugly",

    I'm thinking more

    "There is / isn't a god."

or "the government is wrong to do this"

both of which are potentialy harmful to both person and state.

basically, i thought of this at work...

    and it's freaked me out.

    please defend free speach.

  • Customising vintage clothing?

I have bought the most beautiful 1940's dress from ebay

i really love it, but it is quite long; making it too formal to wear day to day.

what do you think about modifying vintage dresses?

is it wrong to modify them to suit modern fashions?

or is it better that it be worn, even if this means altering it?

  • According to your religion, am i good person?

    i am no virgin

    i swear like a sailor

i do not believe in any "god"

and i drink, smoke and lie as i see fit to having fun...

    BUT

i am loyal to a fault; i would rather [ and i mean seriously rather] suffer torture under pain of death ] than betray my best friend or papa,

would prefere an amusing anecdote to spiritual awakening

and would rather be damned for professing what i belive to be the truth than a trillion years of heaven.

and i have a VERY dark sense of humor

does this, admittedly athiest, veiwpoint damn me to "hell" or lowerd caste or simple death in you opinion.

i am a commited athiest, but i would

d REALLY like to hear YOUR opinion on the matter.

  • is poetry the natural enemy pf philosophy?

Poetry beautifies existance with stupostition and myth [ie greek and norse poems]

whereas philosophy questions existance and rejects myth in the pursuit of truth.

    philosphy seeks truth

    poetry seeks beauty

the two are rarely the same.

  • Sh!tty sheets...?

man in a hospital ward wakes up to find he has shat himself.

"through the eye of a needle" type...

he is too embarrassed to call the ward sister

so he leaps out of bed, rips off the sheets and throws them out of the window.

suddenly there is a cry of shock in the street below

the hospitalised man rushes to the window and looks down.

his sh!tty sheets have landed on a drunk, who is flailing around trying to get them off him.

eventually he succeeds and stands, covered in diahreah, panting and staring at the sheets.

a paramedic runs up to him.

"Are you alright mate?" he asks the drunk.

the drunk looks up at him slowly, his eyes wide with fear and says...

"i think i just beat the sh!t out of a ghost..."

    star if you like.

  • paradise lost: the appeal of Lucifer?

does anyone on here think that the devil -lucifer- is a textbook tragic hero?

in that he had it allllll going for him, being gods pet favourite, but his fatal flaw -pride and ambition- led to his spectacular flaw

    like Macbeth or Othello.

which renders him ultimatly, really quite appealing and sympathtic.

this is sort of a literarure question i suppose...

but i thought i'd get more of a reaction out of you's lot.

  • What is virtue?

how would you define virtue in the modern day?

are the traditional virtues of : Justice, Courage, Wisdom, and Temperace relavant anymore?

or have they been cast out in favour of a selfish consumerist lifestyle?

does anyone ever think about virtue, outside of religious contexts?
