  • How to handle a single mom employee with behavioral and functional issues?

My employee is a single mom & have allowed her to work around her infant son's daycare schedule. Most of the employees dislike her attitude, she does seem to express a bit less of a professional demeanor. At one point, she was completely subordinate after she became frustrated with an assignment. I've had to address her attitude with me on two separate occasions and her response was to have me personally approach her if she is ever acting in that manner again.

Q#1) to what extent in CA, can we exercise the legal right as management to temporarily dismiss an employee and ask them to go home due to such issues?

I also notice that with other employees who are just as new as her, I am able to verbally request a specific report and verbally advise on how to pull together such reports using different programs, excel formulas, etc. without an issue. With her, she needs me to always write it out in a detailed email to her, sit with her to run her through the process. and allow her to give it a wack on her own. At this point, I really want to let her go because of the extensive amount of micromanaging I've been having to do.

Q#2) what are my options here?

She's the only employee who has never stayed for overtime because of daycare. Although I can understand, we get pretty busy with client requests and some of them have deadlines that I need her to meet even if she has to stay overtime.

Q#3) Can I impose mandatory overtime on this employee regardless of her daycare situation?

  • Simple Temperature Conversion Question?

"If an object with an initial temperature of 300 K increases its temperature by 1°C every minute, by how many degrees Fahrenheit will its temperature have increased in 10 minutes?"

I was told the answer is "The kelvin unit and Celsius degree are the same size; that is, a change of 10 K is equal to a change of 10°C. One degree Celsius is equal to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit; therefore, 10°C = 18°F".. but I thought you need to convert 300K --> Celcius by substracting 273 then using the F = 9/5C + 32 question to get the Farenheit degrees... and my answer after all of that was 50 F.

Can someone please explain what I am missing here?

  • How to fire an employee without risking her from collecting unemployment benefits?

I have an employee who worked for me for nearly a year as a receptionist. The past few months she has not been doing her job correctly and has made several mistakes that required common sense. She has admitted to working 2 separate jobs with 14 hour days on a daily basis to support her family but, we would like to let her go because of her inability to properly do her job. She only works 8 hours a week. How do we let her go without risking her collecting unemployment benefits?

  • Water damage to condo you rent. Does the owner owe you a rent credit?

I rent a 4-bedroom condo with three other friends and recently there was extensive water damage in our kitchen because of an old refrigerator that went bad. The owner is currently repairing our kitchen but, in the midst of it all we are all left without the use of a kitchen. The repair workers also had to install large fans that blew hot air all over the condo making it over 100F degrees inside, impossible to even breathe and live in. Because of this, we had to stay elsewhere with family or friends, etc. We all have a separate lease for each separate bedroom we rent with the owner. Is she still entitled to charge us rent for this entire inconvenience?

  • How to hook up a fax modem to a phone line that's already hooked up to your fax machine?

So I have an HP Office Jet Pro 8600 Plus (4-all-in-one) that I normally use to fax documents for business purposes. I have become increasingly tired of having to first print out documents directly from my computer in order to fax them to another office. This is a waste of paper, ink, and time. For this reason, I want to set up a fax modem so I can use Windows Fax & Scan on my Gateway computer with Windows 7 so that I can directly fax documents from my computer to the recipient's fax. The only issue is, I have one phone line that I use for my fax machine and that is directly connected to this fax machine but I understand a USB fax modem must also plug into a phone line as well. How do I set up the USB fax modem without compromising the current phone line attached to my fax machine? Do I need a splitter? I want to be able to still use my fax machine for receiving faxes and faxing any paper documents not found in my computer (for ex. documents I receive in the mail).

  • Damaged item subject to restocking fee + initial shipping. Can I recourse if I paid with a standard Visa Credit Card?

Bought a $700 fishtank with free shipping. Fishtank was on backorder for 60 days and when it finally arrived merchant sent me the wrong one. Notified merchant. This time, they sent me the correct one, but damaged in several places. Never signed anything. Wasn't even delivered by a valid shipper. Delivered by some hippie guy wearing jeans whom merchant apparently paid $100 to personally deliver. Notified merchant again. I wanted a full refund because I was sick of all of the inconveniences. Merchant said my refund was subject to a 15% restocking fee + initial shipping cost (even though I received free shipping when I first bought it) + cost for shipping it back for refund. Argued with merchant and told her I shouldn't be paying that if it's not my fault their delivery guy wasn't careful. I clearly told her I wanted my full refund and she said "Ok. No problem". Got off the phone. She emailed me minutes later telling me yet again, she will be giving me my refund minus the restocking fee and all other shipping fees stated earlier. Called her back telling her she was contradicting what she had previously agreed to do over the phone (and that was to give me my full refund back). We argued and she hung up on me. Luckily I recording our entire conversation over the phone using an app on my Android. Called my bank to dispute. Rep over the phone mentioned as per Visa policy, damaged items returned to merchant are not subject to a restocking fee. Is this true? How can I fight this?

  • Do MCAT test prep books ever become outdated for present and future MCAT exams?

I'm taking the MCAT this May and a friend of mine has a stack of 2010 Kaplan test prep books that she is willing to let me borrow. The thing is, we are now at 2013, and I know that the MCAT has a few changes to it. Should I invest into the most recent test prep books or save myself some cash and just borrow the older versions from my friend?

  • How to permanently delete someone off your iphone?

So I'm trying to permanently delete my ex's number off my iphone 4. I went ahead and deleted him off my contacts but I notice when I create a new text message and type in the first two letters of his name in the bar where you input the contact you are texting, his name and number still pops up in the drop down menu along with any other contacts I have that have a similar name starting with those two letters. How do I remove him from this drop down menu? I thought I permanently deleted his number by simply removing him from my contacts but I guess not.

  • "Error-Printing" on HP psc 2175 printer.?

I am using an hp psc 2175 all in one printer and Windows 7. Everytime I try to print the job is stuck on the queue and says "printing" under the status at first and then it turns into "error-printing" after a few minutes. I've tried EVERYTHING..unplugging the printer, re-installing and updating the driver, reseting the spool, etc. including the hp troubleshooting page and I even went as far as to system restore my computer. That worked but after a few days, the printer went back to it's old "error-printing" ways. It won't even print a test page. What should I do?

  • What are some good arguments I can contest against this parking ticket I received?

I'm originally from Vallejo, CA (my car's license plates even say Vallejo). I stayed over at my boyfriends' place in Fullerton, CA and since there was no more visitor parking available I parked on the street overnight. The next morning I received a 35$ parking ticket for parking overnight between the hours of 2-5am. I was in utter shock because there was no signs near the sidewalk that clearly said "No Parking between the hours of 2-5am". I googled "overnight parking in Fullerton" and found the city's website that pointed out no one was allowed to park on any street in Fullerton between the hours of 2-5am unless any sign said otherwise. How was I supposed to know that? I find it ridiculous that visitors must google the city's parking policy in order to avoid a ticket. My bf said I should point out that I wasn't from Fullerton and show proof that my plates say Vallejo. Does anyone have any other ideas? I know it's only 35$ and it could be worse but I still think its ridiculous only because it was unavoidable.

  • My boyfriend enjoys viewing and commenting on model's pages and photos on Facebook. Is this normal?

I've been going out with this guy for 5 months and just recently I noticed he has been liking several model's pages and photos on Facebook, one page in particular titled "Gym Hotties" where buff girls pose semi-nude in bikinis and short shorts. At first I confronted him about it and told him it's disrespectful for him to do that online especially when I can see it on my timeline. It doesn't make me feel insecure it's just bothersome and it looks BAD. He explained the reason why he likes these photos is because they are popular and by liking them several people on his network will be drawn to his page and he will gain more fans for his future car company. At first I bought it, and then I thought it was complete bull **** after noticing that not only was he liking these model's photos. He was also commenting them. He has said things like "Dammmn she looks good!" and (the one that has bothered me the most) "I want to go to the midwest just to try to find a girl like this! That's perfection all around." What in the world does that mean? Should I be worried? And how do I confront him about this? In no way am I trying to be insecure, it just looks really bad especially when I can see this on my timeline every time I go on Facebook. And then again, I don't want to make this whole thing seem like a big deal seeming how Facebook is just a stupid online social network where people are free to be stupid and look stupid as they please. Any sincere advice will be appreciated.

  • Can I still get accepted to a CSU without completing the CSU General Education requirements?

I have applied to CSU Long Beach and CSU San Francisco State. I have completed most general education requirements besides the oral communication and political science courses necessary. Is there a possibility I can still get admitted with a 3.5 GPA?

  • Teller position at Chase or Wells Fargo?

I used to work for Chase as a teller for about 6 months before I quit last year due to school but now that I'm done with school, I've applied at both banks. Both interviewed me and really liked me and I should be hearing from the both by tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I'll get both job offers but my question is, which is better: Working as a teller at Chase or Wells Fargo? I heard Wells has a better incentive pay for having referalls but since I've had previous experience and training in chase I think I might be better of with them. Thoughts?

  • Is it a better idea to drive my California-registered vehicle to Toronto or instead invest in a new/used car?

So I'm an American student originally from Northern California, United States studying on a student visa at York University in Toronto, Canada and I'm considering in either driving a car I have sitting back in my California home to Canada but I'm not sure whether it would be a good idea or not considering the long trip, price of gas, the hassle of registering the car and paying the fees, etc. The car is in pretty great condition, it's an '04 Toyota Rav-4 and I've been driving it for 2-3 years now until I decided to come out to Canada to study. I really want a car handy next year considering the hassles I've had living without one. I'm always out and about and public transportation costs have really emptied my wallet out more than paying for a tank of gas every 3-4 days. Even grocery shopping was a hassle, carrying my 100$ worth of groceries 1/2 mile to the bus stop was not much fun.

Does anyone, by experience, think it would be worth the expense driving my car out there or would I be better off purchasing an equally great, and inexpensive vehicle in Canada instead?
