  • Law of Sines? (Book error?)?

    Solve the triangle:

    a = 40, b = 30, A = 75°

    I got B = 46.423°, C = 75.58°, and c = 40.11

My book says differently, and I really think it made an error... They got C = 134°, and consequently that c = 29.7886.

    They got C by subtracting 46° from 180°, but doesn't A + B + C = 180°, not C + B = 180°? I'm reluctant to think the book published a mistake, but it seems like a simple human error of leaving an angle out...

  • For how many minutes is a passenger above 100 feet?

The function h below gives the height above the ground of a passenger on a Ferris wheel t minutes after the ride begins. During one revolution of the Ferris wheel, for how many minutes is the passenger at least 100 feet above the ground?

    h(t) = 64 - 46cos[(π/5)t], where 0 ≤ t ≤ 0

How would I go about figuring this out? In case you need it to check, the answer is 2.14.

  • Help with quadratic function?

In the xy-plane, the graph of y=x2+bx+c is symmetric about the line x=3 and passes through the point (5,2). What is the value of c?

I have no idea how to go about finding the answer at all. Can someone explain the process please?

  • Help with factoring quadratics?

I asked this earlier, but I don't think I'm going to get any more answers because this forum moves so quickly. Anyway, what I'm having trouble with, is how to simplify this:

    (x-1)[x^2(x-4)-4(x-4)]=0

    into this:

    (x-1)(x-4)(x^2-4)=0

    ?

I keep thinking there should be an extra (x-4) in there, it seems like it just disappears. I have a feeling this is something easy that I'm missing, but I really need help.

  • Need help with factoring polynomials?

Okay, I know how to find the zeroes in a polynomial equation through synthetic division, but once I have one root and am left with factoring out the other roots, I'm lost.

    Here's what I'm stuck with:

    x^4-5x^3+20x-16=0

I found that +1 is a root, so I end up with

    (x-1)(x^3-4x^2-4x+16)=0, then

    (x-1)[x^2(x-4)-4(x-4)]=0

... Now what? In everything I look at, numbers just seem to disappear in the next step and it's just magically sorted and solved with no explanation, so I assume it's something simple that I'm just missing?

  • Evolution: What do you have to tell yourself to deny its existence?

No offense intended, I just want to know what it is about creationism that makes more sense than evolution to some people, when there's so much viable evidence against it.

What do you believe and why?
