  • Lawyer question: Sungevity, Inc., the company I bought my solar system from, is filing Chaper 11 bankruptcy. Do I need to file a claim?

Sungevity offered referral bonuses to customers like me who referred friends that bought their own solar system. They owe me $1000 for such a referral, but will I need to file a claim as a creditor to get that money? It looks like there s a way to file a complaint to be "excepted from discharge" of the debt, with a deadline June 8. I have no idea how to do that.

Here s a link that looks like what I got in the mail. https://www.kccllc.net/sungevity/document/17105611...

  • We have 8 chicks 10 weeks old. One of them is starting to crow at 5:30am. At what age should I be able to tell if it s a rooster?

I ve read that hens will sometimes crow. Apparently it s a way they can communicate with roosters over a distance, and we do have roosters in the area that can be heard. At what point will I be able to definitively identify if any of our sexed chicks are actually roosters? I ve also read that roosters won t start crowing until 4-5 months, so 10 weeks sounds early. It s not really a full "cocka-doodle-doo", more like the last part only.

  • Is a rental unit required to be a "dwelling" as defined in the building code?

In design of a detached room on my property, code requirements dictated that we could not add another "dwelling" on the property. Essentially that meant not installing permanent cooking appliances. It has a living space, loft bedroom, restroom, mini fridge, and "wet bar". Bascially a 1 bedroom apartment with no stove. I'm wondering if there is any legal limitation to renting out the space.

  • How cold is too cold for a Black Mission Fig?

I have a young Black Mission fig, and I want to know if I should be wrapping it tonight since it s going to freeze. I read figs (generally?) are ok down to 25F, but I m not sure how much I should trust that information.

  • I have a 2TB external USB connected drive that I want to use as network attached storage. What device should I get?

All I want to do is access the drive via my home wired network. I don't need internet data access, wifi, or any additional features. I just need it to serve as a remote backup (approximately 60 feet away from the router) in case the house burns down.

  • When should I buy Canada to USA plane tickets for Christmas?

Does anyone have experience with the best time to buy plane tickets across the Canada/US border? I'm used to more domestic flights, which tend to be anywhere from 2 weeks prior to 6 weeks prior for the best deals. But I know Christmas factors in to that, and I know the international travel also factors in. I've also read that international travel, in general, should be more like 10 weeks in advance. Who knows (or better yet, has experience) how far ahead these tickets should be purchased?

  • Why do I keep losing Google?

At work, we have multiple machines with a server running Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security.

Occasionally, I will not be able to connect to anything Google (google drive desktop app, gmail, google.com) for what seems like a random amount of time. This time about 15 minutes. Firefox simply says "connecting to www.google.com" for a while, and then reverts to "new tab" as if I just brought up new tab. No time out message or error 404...nothing. Others on the network do not have this problem. I run Firefox 28.0, but IE also cannot connect to Google during these times. At one point I thought clearing the web browser cache fixed it, but not this time.

Any ideas? The problem seems to have come up since I upgraded desktops to a Dell Precision T3600, but my old machine had the same setup, including Windows 7 pro, same virus protection, web browser etc.

  • My deep freezer is malfunctioning. Suggestions?

It goes into temperature alarm, and the compressor won't be running. Sometimes when I unplug it for awhile it will work again. If I turn the thermostat to off for a bit, then back on, sometimes it will buzz quietly for a couple seconds and then stop. When the compressor does run, it seems to be cooling. It is not noisy.

It is fairly old (20 years). My guess is the compressor relay is getting stuck, but is it possible the compressor itself is starting to seize up? The contents never get to melting, but I suppose the alarm is set for 30F or something. It could still be a bad sensor too. Any other suggestions are welcome. There aren't that many parts, but I don't have the expertise to replace the compressor.

Anyone with experience know the common problems with this type of unit?

  • Is it legal for city police to ticket drivers on the highway?

Our local city police sometimes will ticket people for speeding on the highway. Is that legal? I always thought that highway traffic enforcement is solely done by the highway patrol.

  • Can I "clone" a large hard disk to a smaller one if the usage is not exceeded?

I have a 1TB hard disk with about 150GB used, and I would like to clone what is there to a 200 MB SSD so I can save the work of installing windows and programs, deactivating and reactivating software etc. Can this be done? It is Windows 7 Pro on a Dell Precision T3600. I tried shrinking the volume on the larger drive, but it would still be bigger than 200 MB. It seems a straight across clone is not an option...

  • What kind of NEMA 3 box do I need to transition from #1 SER to #1 THHN?

I am running a 100 amp feeder to a new detached building sub panel. I am running #1 SER aluminum in the existing crawlspace to the exterior, where I need to transition to buried conduit. I was told a NEMA 3 box on the exterior wall would be a good way to transition, but what kind? A Home Depot reference would be most appreciated if available.

  • Ductless split AC: Is 3/4" suction line ok instead of 5/8"?

For a new construction project, I bought a 1.5 ton ductless split Fujitsu unit. Specs call for a 3/8 liquid line and a 5/8 suction line. I was able to get a free line set, but the suction line is 3/4", not 5/8". The liquid side is still 3/8. Will this be a problem? I don't have time to wait for a manufacturer response.

  • Does roof sheath have to be alternated by half sheets?

Or can it be 2' offset? I have a shed I'm working on that is 16' from facia to facia, but the lookouts only extend a foot past the edge. In other words, it will work really nicely if I can do a 3', 8', 5', and then 5', 8', 3' on the next level up. Two sheets, and only one cut per level.

Half sheet offset is similar, but the edge piece over the lookouts would only be 12", which seems not as strong to me.

  • Rear speaker signal for mono subwoofer wiring?

I bought a new car and want to put my old subwoofer into it. The factory stereo does not have sub out. Can I tap into both rear speakers and somehow produce a combined mono signal for the single channel amp? Is there much quality loss to just take either left or right by itself? Not sure how to proceed.

  • Is a passive 1st order subwoofer crossover this simple?

I have an old amp/subwoofer combo that I want to move to my "new" car. The factory stereo does not have sub out, so I intend to intercept the rear speaker signal in the trunk and route to the amp. The amp does not have built in crossover. After researching a bit on this, it seems a passive crossover is as simple as adding a properly selected coil in the positive speaker wire leading to the subwoofer--downstream of the amp. Is this true? I am not interested in high power or super high quality, I just want it to work reasonably to fill out the low end. RMS power is probably around 100W max.

  • Can I replace brake shoes only on one side?

I have a 2000 Kia Sephia that is nearly 200k miles. I am limping it along with intent to purchase a new vehicle soon. Is it a safety hazard to replace only one side of the rear drum brake shoes? The other side is good enough to last a while yet, and I'll probably just trade it in to the dealer as I'd feel bad selling to a private party.

  • Does a gable fan actually have a net positive energy savings?

I have gable fans and I thought I'd do a little check to see how much they save. My rough calculations actually turn out to be a net loss with 1800 sq ft of R-30 insulation and a 500W fan--even if the attic gets up to 130F or more without it! The energy to run the fan just didn't add up to savings against 13 SEER cooling. By my calculation, a 500W fan needs to reduce the cooling load by 6500 BTU to pay off (again, 13 SEER efficiency). Googling failed to provide me with information supporting the theory. Anybody out there know the facts or where to find them?

  • Joining walls at a corner where one top plate is sloped?

Please, before you tell me "you should hire a professional", know that I have periodic advice from a professional friend as I frame my own project. I just need this quick answer as he is not available right now. My 500 sq ft rec room is balloon framed per the structural design. One wall is simple 8 ft high with the top plate level, but the adjoining wall top plate follows the slope of the roof at 10:12. How do I overlap the top plates at the corner when one is sloped? Is there a special bracket? The standard detail on the plans assumes both are level, so it does not apply.
