What music genre are songs like...?
What music genre are songs like...
Waltzing Matilda
Yankee Doodle
Camptown Racetracks
Oh Susanna
Clementine
Molly Malone
etc.
I'm looking for the genre name so that I can search for more songs like that... I've tried Folk (because that is what I assumed it would be), but I keep getting things that are more like soft alternative rock. I've also tried traditional folk music and ballads with not much luck.
What would be the the best tag for a search?
3 AnswersOther - Music8 years agoWhy are so many people against housewives?
For a while now I have expressed a desire to be a housewife. My soon-to-be husband loves the idea and really wants to give living off of one salary a shot in the future, especially since we are both simple non-extravagant people.
When I've brought up the desire to be a Housewife with friends I've received numerous negative comments in return:
1) You'll go crazy sitting at home all day
2) Your brain is too good to waste on cleaning and laundry
3) It is impossible to live off one salary in the modern economy
4) God put man on earth to work
5) Why do you want to be some body's slave?
In fact the only person supporting me in my desire right now is my soon-to-be husband, probably because he sees how the corporate world is killing my spirit, and how much happier I am when I am at home cooking, cleaning and baking. He also saw how much it hurt me to hire a maid because I was hiring someone else to do something I truly enjoy.
So then brings the question, why have I had so many negative comments from people, and no positive ones? I was hoping that my friends and family would support me in my desire, but instead they are putting me down (they've never put me down for anything before this).
1 AnswerOther - Society & Culture8 years agoWhy do I still feel like a child?
I'm 27 (female). I have my own house, 2 cars and an average paying job. I'm getting married in March 2013. My question is why do I still feel like a child? and is this normal?
A little insight on the child-like aspects... I'd rather get Lego as a Christmas present than anything else, I play PC games for entertainment, I LOVE trains (steam trains especially), and I generally long for my High School days (of course knowing what I know now about life and "politics" of the environment). Not to mention I love songs (music) that tell a story, I enjoy folk legends and children's stories, and above all I've always felt my imagination is better than my real life...
I feel like even though I am a functioning adult, making wise decisions with my time/money, I am still a child or teenager... Sometimes I feel as though I am 3 personalities inside one body (Child / Teen / Adult)
Is this normal? Do other people feel this way? Is there something abnormal about me?
6 AnswersPsychology8 years agoHow do I find time for my interests?
Long story short, I am interested in LOTS of things - there are lots of things that fascinate me and give me pleasure.
I like sewing, and I want to make my own clothes, but don't have time.
I adore cooking and baking, if I had the time I would cook 3 proper meals daily and bake my own snacks from scratch, but at the moment I barely get time to cook a decent meal at night.
I LOVE programming and have a job as a programmer. I love my job and have no problem working after hours because I enjoy it so much, this doesn't happen often, but I am out of the house 10 hours a day (commute + work time).
I enjoy playing the piano and would love to be able to practice daily.
I enjoy doing housework (weird I know) and hate the fact that I don't have the time to do it myself (I had to hire a maid).
I enjoy writing and would love to write a novel.
I enjoy being outdoors and want to start a vegetable garden, but I'm never at home during daylight hours to work in it (except weekends)
I enjoy walking and wish I could go for a 30-45 minute walk on a daily basis.
And then there are also other interests like: getting involved in a church group, knitting, reading, playing computer games, entertaining friends and family, writing letters/emails to people, cross-stitch, researching unexplained mysteries, researching etiquette and manners of past era's etc.
How do I fit all the interests into my life? Things like gardening and walking are difficult to do when I am not at home during daylight hours (leave the house at 7am, get back at 6pm). It's all about balance, and I have never been able to figure out how to balance everything - any advice?
2 AnswersPsychology9 years agoHow do I deal with guests behaving inappropriately at a party?
Last night I had an informal dinner party as a housewarming. I provided a meal, cool drink and wine. The idea was to have my guests arrive from 4pm to 5pm so we could drink cooldrink/tea/coffee and chat before dinner was served at 6pm with wine and for the evening to end between 10pm and 11pm. There were 5 guests plus myself and my boyfriend.
The young married couple were excellent guests, and left a short while after the meal of over (didn't stay too long, or too short a time).
The other people behaved completely inappropriately. They brought their own beer with and lots of it. I intended to only have light drinking at the party (wine with supper). Naturally having drunk too much they got very loud. Then my neighbours (who had friends over) heard our party and my guests invited my neighbours to join us after the meal for drinks. These neighbours had been drinking on an even heavier degree than my guests and the party got out of hand. In the end the neighbours and guests only left at 1am.
The neighbours were so badly drunk they went to the lavatory in my garden! And these were men who were at least 10 years older than myself and my guests (we are in our middle 20s). The men did not treat myself or the other lady at the party with any respect and told extremely crude jokes infront of us. I can handle it if men are a little crude, I grew up a tom boy, hearing more than the average woman would, but the jokes told were on a completely different scale to anything I've heard before. And I am too embarrassed to repeat some of the comments that were made about myself and the other lady present.
I wanted to be a considerate hostess, so I let a lot slide last night. But for future reference, what is the appropriate way to handle guests who have behaved completely inappropriately and are making a nuisance of themselves?
7 AnswersEtiquette9 years agoChances of friendship turning into relationship?
If a guy and a girl have been friends for 6+ years, and the girl has wanted something more most of that time, but the guy has never turned it into anything more, what are the chances he ever will?
1 AnswerSingles & Dating1 decade agoIf a guy and girl have been friends for 6 years, do you think they could ever be more?
There is a guy who has been friends with a certain girl since High School... They are now 24 (girl) and 22 (guy). The guy has had one girlfriend during this friendship (and that relationship lasted 5 months). The girl has never had a boyfriend. What do you think the chances are that these two might actually end up being an official couple?
They have been involved in a lot of charity related activities together and work well together. I can tell that the girl would want them to be a couple if she had her way, but the guy has never given his opinion on it.

1 AnswerSmall Business1 decade agoAre my standards in regards to men too high? Should I bend them for latest crush?
I have specifically been looking for:
1) Christian - who at the very least goes to church on Sundays
2) Relatively good looking, but doesn't need to be model material
3) Doesn't try to get into my pants within the first month.
4) Pays some attention to me. I like at least 1 text message a day and being able to see him for 5 hours a week.
5) Older than me, or the same age.
There is a guy who is:
1) Atheist but tolerant of other beliefs.
2) Very Hot!
3) Only sleeps with a woman if he loves her.
4) Buys me drinks whenever we are at the same bars and he has payed a lot of attention to previous girlfriends
5) 4 years younger than me.
I am 24. I have given up on Mr. Right-Now, I've had enough of them. I am now looking for Mr. Right. Do you think I should bend my Rules for this guy, I heard from a common friend once that the only reason he hasn't asked me out on a date is because I said I am looking for a Christian guy as long term boyfriend.
My reasons for discriminating on religion is simply because when I eventually have children I want to be in agreement with the father on how they are raised and dating a non-Christian could lead to more disagreements than dating a Christian.
2 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoWhich religion undergoes the most persecution in the 21st century?
I would like YOUR opinion on which religious belief receives (or has received) the most persecution since it became the 21st century.
Persecution: a program or campaign to exterminate, drive away, or subjugate a people because of their religion, race, or beliefs.
21 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs this fair or unfair in your opinion?
I'm Christian, I got Baptized this past weekend. I have many Christian friends, a few Hindu, Muslim and Jewsih friends, a Wiccan friend and a couple of Atheist friends. I will never try to convert friends from other beliefs to mine, they are all adults and have the ability to think for themselves - just like I do. My reasons for being a Christian are just as good as their reasons for their belief.
Where I work, everybody has their own office, a few of us share an office with 1 other person (like me). My office partner is a Christian, but she is more of a Bible Basher (so to speak).
While we work we are allowed to have music playing softly. I usually listen to the Christian Radio station, my office partner enjoys it too.
Last week my office partner tried to "convert" one of the other people in our office block (the one next door to us). Now he has logged a complaint (and rightly so), but in the complaint he has asked that NO religion of any form be allowed in the work environment. About 20% of the people in our office block are Christians, and 60% other religions (Buddist, Hindu, Muslim etc.) and the other 20% Athiest.
That means that my office mate and I won't be allowed to listen to the Christian radio station anymore, we will have to take down the calendar with Bible Verses which is posted behind our office door (nobody sees that but the two of us) and my desktop wallpaper of a cross will also have to be removed. The people of the other religions will also not be allowed to have their religious artifacts in their offices - just because of 1 person.
Yet this young man (who I had no problem with up until now) will still be allowed to keep the AC/DC poster and listen to his metal music - which I could argue has so much cursing in it, it should be banned too. But I am not going to because it doesn't affect me unless I go into his office.
Up until now (and I've been here for 3 years) it has been a pleasant working environment, we all have a lot of freedom to do whatever we want as long as we get the work done. Everybody got along great, until my office partner and this other guy got started working here a month ago.
I think she should get a "slap on the wrists" possibly be informed of the working environment and the silent understanding we all have of other people's beliefs - but it shouldn't be banned because 2 people can't get along. Not just the Christian employees will suffer, but the other religions too (which account for 80% of the work force).
What do you think? Do you think that my argument would have any grounding if I was to take it to our boss? Our boss is one of the people who believes in a higher power, but doesn't believe any specific religion.
Why do the majority have to suffer because of the minority?

8 AnswersSociology1 decade agoReligion in a private school...?
The Parent-Body of this school decided that the primary religion of the school was going to be Christian, since 90% of the children grew up in Christian house-holds. The same Parent-Body decided that they were going to ask various ministers to present a Christian Bible Study class to the students.
To accommodate the 10% of the students who were not from Christian families they agreed that any parent who did not want their child present in the Christian Bible Study class could write a letter of request and those children would be given a separate class of the parents choosing during that lesson (the parents said that their children should just go to the library and study during that lesson - which happens 1 time a week).
There have never been any complaints (in 20 years) until now. 2 parents out of approximately 1000 say that the Christian Bible Study class should be discontinued and the children should be taught about all religions equally. These parents have been told that their children can have a special lesson in which they are taught about all religions, but they are not happy with it, and want ALL children in the school to be taught about ALL religions. These 2 parents are also threatening to sue the school.
Do you think what the school does regarding religion being taught is fair or unfair?

4 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoIs it tacky to break up with someone over the phone if...?
I've been trying to get hold of him for the past 5 days to break up with him in person and every time I try to make a time for us to see each other he comes up with an excuse so as not to see me. Either he is writing a test, or he has rugby practice, or he is helping his brother with something... blah blah blah.
I think it is really tacky to break up with somebody on the phone, but I can't seem to get hold of him to do it in person.
What do you think? Is it tacky to break up with someone over the phone (considering the circumstances)?
12 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoQuestion regarding Baptism and my atheist friends...?
I'm a Christian and I'm being Baptized soon. I have quite a few atheist friends and even more "non-practicing" Christian friends. Because they are close friends of mine I'd like to ask them to be present at my Baptism because it is a major event for me - like getting married would be a major event. Would it be alright to ask them just to be there? I'm not trying to convert them or anything like that, I respect their beliefs, I just want them there because they are my friends and being baptized is a public declaration that I have chosen to follow God. If you are atheist and a friend asked this of you, would you go?
19 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs living a Christian lifestyle more evangelistic than speaking of Christ to others?
If a person lives a Christian lifestyle and perhaps carry's around a cross or a W.W.J.D band but doesn't speak about their beliefs unless directly asked about them, are they more likely to gain the respect of non-believers than if a person tries to turn every conversation into an attempt to convert the non-Christian (no matter how skillful the person is in their speech)?
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoA dream with a recurring theme - possible interpretation.?
It started over a year ago. I dreamt that I was in a building on my university campus, in the corridor. It was very vivid, I can actually walk right up to the real spot on campus I know exactly where it is. In my dream I was leaning with my back against the wall, the wall across from me had the marks for my test on it. There was a guy from my class, he was standing in front of me. We said something to each other, then he bent in and kissed me - quite a hectic kiss, but not more than a kiss. In the dream I was aware that I had a boyfriend (I had one in real life) and that I was cheating on him.
In Real World:
The dream made me take notice of my subconscious feelings for this guy from my class. Eventually my boyfriend and I broke up, I actually dated the guy from my class for a few months, but he broke up with me saying: "I really like you, but I'm not ready for a serious relationship." Alright... now after this break-up I have dated others, been exclusive with one guy for a while and now I'm single.
After the break-up with the classmate guy I kept having dreams with a recurring theme regarding him. I've dreamt:
Different settings and we kiss in these dreams.
That he is talks to his friends about me, saying stuff like: "I wish she would stop dating other guys, I love her, I'm just not ready for her as a girlfriend yet." and other things along those lines.
And the most scary dream of all, I dreamt I woke up with him lying next to me in my bed! - I'm not sure how this worked because I have a single bed, but he was there.
I dream about him approximately once a week.
Interpretations of these dreams?
2 AnswersDream Interpretation1 decade agoI'm having a recurring dream - what do you make of it?
I keep having dreams about two of my friends (who are in a relationship) breaking up. I'm not attracted to the guy (or the girl for that matter - but I don't swing that way anyway). Just last week though, I heard that they were engaged. I've been having these dreams since they started dating 6 months ago at roughly 2 week intervals.
The dream always happens in different settings, but the actual events are the same.
Think these dreams have any meaning?
2 AnswersDream Interpretation1 decade agoWhat social group would you put yourself in? And what group would you put me in (at a guess)?
I'd love to know what social group you would place yourself in... since you are the only person who knows your true personality.
As for me...
Interests: Science Fiction, Mysteries, Ancient Civilizations, Computer Games = Geek?
Dress-code: Mostly Jeans/Khaki pants & Skelanimal T-shirts are my fave! But I also love the preppy look, my cupboard is about 50/50 on this one = Rock Girl/Preppy?
Favourite place to hang out: a bar/pizza parlour called The Mystic Boer. It is the place where all the Goths, Rockers, Emo's etc hang out. = Rock Girl?
Personality: Loves being out with people, can be extrovert when I'm out and about, but when I'm at home I like my personal space and don't like people getting into my personal space. = No Idea :-)
So where would you place me? And where do you place yourself (and why do you place yourself there?)
