  • What is involved in adding a hearth to a floating brick fireplace?

I have a floating fireplace (approximately 2 feet off the ground) and would like to get a fireplace insert. I was told I d have to add a hearth or find another way to support the insert so the part that hangs past the opening is supported by something.

I m not sure what would be involved in something like that. Would they cut out bricks and add a hearth or somehow use screws/bolts to anchor it in?

  • Question about the 7/7 bombings in England?

I m curious if there is some sort of memorial every year. I live in America and every year on 9/11 all the news stations and newspapers are filled with 9/11 stuff. You can t go anywhere without it constantly being shoved in your face. I know some survivors who would rather not have the constant reminder. It seems odd to me that 14 years later we re making memorials and services so public.

Since the 7/7 bombings were similar in a way to 9/11 I m curious if it s memorialized in a similar way every year. Do the news stations have tapes of the memorial and interviews playing all day? Is it the front page of every newspaper? Are everyone s statues on social media about it?

How can I tell how far a long a cat is in pregnancy?

A friend had been feeding an outside cat and was going to get her fixed but then realized she's pregnant. I took her in so her babies and her will all get the proper care. I don't want to stress her out by bringing her to the vet just to see how far along she is.

Her stomach is very rounded and her nipples are large. I tried to get a good picture of her belly.

Is there maybe a site with pictures of each stage of pregnancy? I'd imagine she's due soon but I'd like to know how much time I have.

  • Where should I place a daybed/area rug in this room?

I have a room that has no blank walls. One wall has the door, one has a closet and 2 have windows.

The issue is that neither window is centered and both have very low sills (around 25" from the floor) so I'd be blocking a large portion of the window with the bed. The wall with the closet has 87" from the closet to the wall where I could place the bed but then it wouldn't be centered on the wall.

I'd like to have an area rug near the bed but I don't know if it'll look funny if it's not centered in the room.

    What are your suggestions?

  • How much light is my yard really getting?

When looking at plants there doesn t seem to be a distinction between direct and indirect sun. My yard has a lot of shade but there are areas that get dappled sunlight all day and other areas that get indirect sun all day. They re definitely not deeply shaded.

When looking at sun requirements what would these situations be considered? I feel like dappled sun all day would equal at least partial shade as far as overall light for the day but I don t want to invest in plants that won t survive.

  • Is there a way to repel or kill mosquitoes without harming other bugs?

I have a lot of mosquitoes in my yard and would like to control them. I've gone through my whole yard to make sure there's no breeding grounds. I don't want to kill every bug. I have no problem with ants, moths, beetles, etc. I just really would like to get rid of the mosquitoes...and maybe the ticks too if that's possible.

I haven't found any products that don't kill everything. They'll advertise as specifically for mosquitoes but then on the back it lists a ton of bugs that I don't want to kill.

  • Why is my oregano growing close to the ground?

My dad had a huge patch of oregano so I took some. It was growing into a decent sized bush and was growing upright. But mine is growing close to the ground and out from the middle. Why would it do this?

  • What could cause blood in urine with no infection in a 26 year old female?

I had gone to the doctor for a physical and they found trace amounts of blood in my urine. I was sent for another test a week after that one and a third test another week later. My doctor said she wanted to send me to a urologist after the 3rd positive test but I won't have insurance for another month (I just switched jobs). I'm worried this might be something serious and I should pay out of pocket for the visit.

I have pain in the middle left side of my back. It's not nearly as bad as when I had kidney stones but in the same area. I get a frequent urge to pee. Sometimes I actually do have to pee but other times I only pee a little. Other than that I have no fever or other symptoms.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could there be a simple explanation?

  • Is it difficult to speak ASL but have to read/write in English?

I feel like it would be the same as a hearing person speaking English but writing in Russian. The grammar is completely different. Does that make it more difficult to understand what you're reading?

I'm sure it'd depend on when each one was learned but in general it seems like signing one language and reading/writing in another would make school work more difficult and time consuming. I know if I had to write all my work in Russian after hearing my lectures all in English it would be more difficult.

  • Things to do near Miami, FL?

I'm going to be visiting Miami at the end of May. I'd like to do something other than sit at the hotel pool all day. What are some interesting things to do or see? I'm very interested in outdoor activities like botanical gardens but I'm open to ideas. I'll have a car so even if something is an hour or so away that's fine.

  • What exactly does a salary key tell a lender?

The person on the phone was very vague and said it allows the lender to access salary information (duh) and verify that I'm employed.

Do they ask specifically how much I've made this year so far or just what my yearly salary is based on my scheduled hours and hourly rate?

  • How do you feel about only dogs being allowed to be service animals?

I don't feel that it's fair to limit service animals to dogs. I have a friend who would benefit from a service animal (he has been prescribed one) but he's extremely allergic to dogs. The law was recently changed to limit service animals to only dogs (and sometimes mini horses but he couldn't fit one in his house). I understand that you can have an emotional support animal of a different species but that doesn't help people who need their service animal with them in public places.

What are your thoughts on this?

  • How to address service animal laws?

This is long so please bear with me...

I know currently the law states that only dogs and miniature horses (oddly enough) can be service animals in the US. I do not believe this is fair because some people are in need of a service animal but are allergic to dogs or horses or afraid of one or both of them.

I have a friend with PTSD who does qualify for a service animal. He can barely leave the house and his quality of life is severely compromised but severely allergic to dogs and a miniature horse would be too big for his house. A mini pig would be a great option for him though. They're easily trained and don't trigger allergies.

How would I address this with the ADA? I know it will be difficult to change a law by myself but I'm hoping to find some sort of starting point. I don't see why the law should only limit service animals to two species when the world is full of people with allergies. Since the laws currently limit service animals to ones who actually do a certain task (as opposed to just providing emotional support) I feel like that would exclude inappropriate animals. I also think it's ridiculous to exclude monkeys since they can do things like dogs never could such as put a DVD in or brush your hair for people who cannot do that on their own. They also live 20-30 compared to the 8-12 years for a service dog.

  • Is it legal for an employer to require you to sign a medical release form when you're on unpaid leave?

I broke my foot and I'm unable to work. My job gave me a form they said I have to sign that gives them the right to speak with my doctor about my condition. I worry because I have foot abnormalities and will require surgeries in the future. I do not want to be fired if they find this out and don't feel it's their legal right to pry.

    The form also states

"Leave conditioned on authorization: I understand that my leave may be conditioned on my agreement to this authorization, and any additional authorization COMPANY NAME requests."

Which basically means if I don't sign the form they can refuse to grant me leave and fire me because of a temporary physical disability.

I feel that if I have a signed form from my doctor stating that I cannot preform my job duties that that should be all they need.

So is this legal for them to demand they can speak to my doctor about my personal health and if I refuse they can fire me?

    This is in NY btw,

  • When using a mortgage broker who verifies employment?

Out of curiosity, when using a broker would the broker and the lending insitiution both get a verbal verification of employment or just one of them? I ask because my job is notoriously bad at not releasing information. Even when someone was just trying to get into an apartment they took forever to verify that she was employed and she didn't get the place. I don't want this to delay my closing.

If it makes a difference, my boyfriend and I are applying together. I have a longer steady employment history (he graduated from college a year ago) but he makes twice as much- 100k vs my 50k a year. So I don't know if verifying his employment will be enough since his income is enough alone to qualify for the loan or if they'll want both. All the down payment/reserve money is in my account so it's not an option for him to apply alone.

  • How often/how many times do mortgage lenders verify employment?

I'm applying for a mortgage with my fiancee and are planning on signing the contract tomorrow. From my understanding some lenders only look at W-2s and paystubs while others will call or send a VOE to the employer. Some sites say that it's only done when the paperwork is first filed and others say that it's also done right before closing to verify you're still employed. I want to switch jobs ASAP (due to sexual harassment that isn't being addressed properly) but do not want to jeopardize getting the mortgage. Is it actually common practice to check right before closing? Would the lender or mortgage broker be able to tell you if the lender does or not?

I have a steady employment history. My fiancee pre-qualified for much more than the house we're looking at appraised for so I don't know if maybe it'd be better for him to apply on his own or if my employment would have a huge impact on the situation or not since he makes so much. The only problem with that is that the down payment money is in my bank account and I don't know if it'd look fishy if he suddenly had a 40k deposit.

Please don't answer this if you don't have either professional or personal experience. If you're just googling the subject and spitting out what you read to me it doesn't help at all.

He makes 100k a year and I make 43k currently. The house is 195k.
