  • Selling a car, purchaser is flying in from out of state. Should I be concerned?

I'm selling a car. It is posted on a few websites, one of which is Craigslist. I've sold two cars before using it and have had success.

A potential buyer texted me last week to negotiate on a price. We reached an agreement and I asked when he wanted to see the car. He said he lives in New Mexico (I am in Connecticut).

I asked him how he planned on seeing the car, and he said he would fly out and drive it back.

I told him we had to meet in person (no intermediaries) and he had to pay cash, and he was totally fine with that. I have also spoken on the phone with him as well.

He is flying out on Monday morning. He found a (very) cheap flight for under $100, (which I find online as well). Do I have any reason to be concerned, both from a scamming perspective and a personal safety perspective?

My Uncle, a retired police officer, thinks the guy is going to pull a gun on me and take the car, but we are meeting in the middle of the daytime at a crowded train station.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or opinions are welcome!

  • Car air conditioner won't take refrigerant?

So the other day, I thought I'd recharge my A/C since it seemed like it could be a little chillier. I've done it before and had a bottle that I *thought* had some more stuff in it. The problem is, I'm a dope, and apparantly I did more harm than good.

So I turned on the A/C, plugged in the gauge, saw that it was a little low, and pulled the trigger. Shook it a bit as I tried to empty the can, checked the gauge, and it looked like it didn't increase the PSI at all.

I also noticed that in my twisting and shaking, the part of the can that was discharging seemed to be leaking, because it slightly untwisted itself.

Fast forward -- I get on the road later, turn on the A/C, and it won't engage. Just keept clicking on for a half second and then turning right back off, cycling every 2-3 seconds or so.

I googled it and found that it was likely that the system was low on refrigerant, figuring I probably let the refrigerant out somehow and so it was cycling on and off not having the pressure it needs to engage. I got a new can and tried to recharge the system, but it didn't seem like the A/C would accept the refrigerant. I'm guessing it was probably because the compressor wouldn't engage.

What's my solution? Do I jumper the compressor to force it to engage, and then recharge? Will I hurt the compressor doing that if it's only for a minute or so while I'm recharging the A/C?

    Thanks for your help --

Why is my front load washing machine banging?

We had a broken support spider which I just fixed. Everything is working normally with that, except now the tub appears to be resting kind of low in the front. See the attached photo. The counterweight lightly knocks against the drain tub underneath the front, and I'm fairly certain it wasn't doing that before.

Also, it knocks for a few seconds at the beginning and end of the spin cycle, as it's slowing down and speeding up.

    Any ideas?

  • If my student loans are joint with my parents and they are paying the bill, can I write off the interest?

I have student loans that are held jointly with my mom. We are co-borrowers.

I am not claimed as a dependent on my mom's tax return.

My mom makes the payments on the student loans.

Am I able to claim the student loan interest deduction on my tax returns? Is she able to? I know that if the loan was in my name only and she was making the payments, then it would be my write-off. But how does it work when the student loan is held jointly?

  • Do I inflate my tires to "max load" or "to set bead"?

My tires give me two different instructions and I'm not sure which to follow.

One part of the tire says "Never inflate past 40 PSI to set bead"

Another part says "Max load 51 PSI"

So... acknowledging that putting it a bit under max is usually best, how much would I inflate the tires to if I want them to be at max safe PSI? They are currently on my car (as in, not on a shelf waiting to be put on a car).

    Thanks!

  • Why does my back hurt? Ribs?

About a week ago when putting on my bookbag, I swung my left arm over to fit into the strap and felt a nearly crippling pain in my upper back, below the shoulder blade. I know next to nothing about human anatomy so my best guess is the left upper ribs.

Every few days I'll move my arm in the wrong way and I'll get the sharp, stabbing pain again. Today I was testing things out and it happens almost exclusively if I lift my left arm over my head and rotate it backward. I felt over my ribs where it hurt and it felt like something was moving slightly out of position when I did it. It didn't quite feel the same on the right side.

Everything feels just perfect otherwise - no pain, no discomfort, nothing... until I move my arm like I described. Then it's a seriously bad stabbing pain - like an 8 or a 9 out of 10.

What do you guys think? Something serious enough to get looked at? Something minor? Thanks for the help!

  • How long does it take to get a hearing date after getting a speeding ticket in Massachusetts?

I got a speeding ticket on August 1st, and mailed in my hearing request on August 18th. I haven't yet heard back from anyone telling me when my hearing date is. While I know this is Massachusetts and things are far from efficient, I'm wondering about how long this would take for me to find out, just so I can make sure something doesn't happen with the mail and I miss it.

  • How would I go about proving that a posted speed limit is illegal in Boston?

Yesterday I got a ticket for going 50 in a 30 (Posted, Estimated, LIDAR, 90/18) on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, just a few feet past Evergreen Cemetery. First of all, I do NOT believe I was going 50mph - maybe 40-45, but that's another story.

    According to this website:

    http://www.motorists.org/ma/s.html

the 30mph posting is illegal. How would I go about showing that in court when I fight my ticket? From what I gather from the website, it looks like I would have to go about by showing that no speed survey was done, and if it was, that it doesn't reflect the speed limit that should be posted?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Can I sue for accelerated rent (future rent) if my sublet violates his lease & does not pay his rent (in MA)?

I am in Massachusetts and have a sublet. If he violates the lease by not paying the rent when it is due, I know I have the right to evict him even without a grace period. However, do I have the right to sue him for up to 3 months future rent for violating the lease, as damages, as a reasonable amount of time to find a new sublet? He is also threatening to move out early.

  • Is it wrong to secretly videotape someone in Connecticut whom you suspect is committing a crime?

I work at a state park and I suspect that a supervisor is stealing money from the registers. Well, I'm positive she's stealing money, but I have no proof. Would it be illegal for me to set up a video camera behind her register to try and catch her in the act?

  • Best route during evening rush hour: Boston College to the University of New Hampshire?

I'm driving from Boston College to the University of New Hampshire on Thursday evening. We're leaving BC at 5:45pm.

How bad does I-93 slow during that time? Google maps says that it would take me only 5 more minutes (without traffic, of course) if I instead went west to I-95 (where it meets I-90) and go north from there.

Does I-95 northbound, north of the Mass Pike, slow badly during the evening rush hour around 6pm?

  • My 1984 Subaru GL will stutter at high speeds, especially when going up hills. Help!?

My 1984 Subaru GL is a 3 speed automatic, and pushes around 3500 RPMs at about 70 mph.

When on the highway, going close to full throttle, and ESPECIALLY when going up hills, the engine will kind of jerk back and forth, as so the power stops and goes. Only when I back my foot off the throttle will the engine return to normal. It's making me a little nervous!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  • When combining random variables X+Y=W, how do you determine the parameters of the pdf of W?

Lets say X has density fX(x) = 7x+2 from 0 to 2, and Y has density fY(y) = 5*lnx from 0 to 2. Combining the random variables as X + Y = W gives an integral from negative infinity to infinity of (7x-2)(5*ln(w-x))dx ... but that integral reduces from (-inf,inf) to something else. I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get it. It's probably something simple, but my book gives next to nothing on how to find it. Any help would be appreciated!

  • My Great Dane/German Shepherd has a swollen leg and can't walk on it :(?

My dog, about 9 years old, has recently gotten some issue with her right front leg.

She was first limping on it a bit a couple weeks ago, and it has gotten progressively worse since. It is now rather severely swollen and she can hardly put any weight on it at all. She also seems to have a bit of a fever and her eyes have been running a little.

Also, she's been drinking a lot more water than normal and urinating a lot as well (probably just because she's been drinking a lot).

Finally, we found a tick on her back, in the same general area near her leg (on her back, but on the right front of her body).

She was taken to the vet and her blood tests came back negative, so I don't know if maybe she broke or sprained something while running around outside a couple weeks ago, and it maybe just got worse, in which case the tick is just a coincidence.

I have no idea what's wrong and it kills me to see her not be able to walk around without significant difficulty. Anyone have any thoughts? :(

  • Why does my steering wheel vibrate at high speeds?

I have quite an old car, but it's in great shape. It's a 1984 Subaru GL, with 110,000 miles. It is a 3 speed and kicks up to 3,500 RPMs or so at 65, 70 mph.

Anyway, when I get somewhere around 65 mph and above, the steering wheel will shake/vibrate pretty hard... maybe an inch or so of shaking at its worst, a centimeter or so on average. Grabbing the wheel really hard just makes your arms shake along with it; it's that stiff.

Anyway, what do you think is the culprit on this? Like I said, it's in great shape, the woman I bought it from did all of the tune ups required for it and had the paperwork to prove it.
