My office already uses motion sensors on the lighting and thermostats on the heating/aircom. Computers are automatically hibernated after a period of inactivity. What else can be done to save energy?

5 AnswersDiet & Fitness9 years agoAre replicators fake (in the star-trek universe)?
Let's be honest - if people really could have whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted it, in near limitless quantities they would replicate tonnes of high-carb snacks and junk - never mind Earl Grey tea - it would be Mars Bars and Hot Chocolate for breakfast lunch and tea.
In which case everyone on board would be really fat and have terrible complexion, so I hypothesise that replicators are in fact FAKE and someone actually makes the cup of tea in the galley then uses STS transport to beam it into the "replicator", it's just clever editing on the part of the post-production team that makes it 'look' like it's instantaneous.
3 AnswersOther - Science9 years agowhat would be the physical effect of shrinking a human?
Assuming I made a machine that could reduce a human (or any other living thing) in a still-living state to about 5% of it's oroginal size, and this was achieved by discarding 95% of the mass - what would be the physical implications? For instance, if the light receptors are the same size in relation to the eyeball the eye, but they have 95% less molecules in them, would the minituarised person still be able to see clearly? Also if the muscles were the same comapritive density, buy 95% samller would they still work at the same rate, or would the miniature person be able to run faster/jump higher?

I just bought a plastic snow shovel from Homebase, but was asked for ID to prove I was over 18 before they would sell it to me. I am struggling to come up with any reason why this might be a restricted item? Perhaps it was a mistake, or maybe there is something more sinister about this shiny red scoop than meets the eye.
9 AnswersLaw Enforcement & Police1 decade agoIs it possible to pass parameters to a runnable JAR file without using Java on the command line (windows)?
I have a JAR file that runs a simple bit of Java that accepts a parameter from the command line. It works if I type
>JAVA -jar program.jar parameter
but if I just type
>program.jar parameter
it doesn't work.
I can run other Java programs like this that don't accept parameters and they run ok. I can't work out what the problem is, It doesn't seem to make any sense. Is it possible to run JAR files and pass parameters without the java -jar bit or is that the only way?
(I am using eclipse ganymede to build the JAR files)
