  • Should philosophy questions be restricted to narrow categories: Ethics, Aesthetics, Metaphysics, ...?

... Ontology, and Epistemology (the 5 classical categories of philosophical inquiry)?

Example #1: A Yahoo member posts this question: "In my philosophy class, I'm assigned a paper comparing two "creation myths", one of which is the "Theory of Evolution". I know the basics of evolutionary theory, but please help me write a simple version of the "Theory of Evolution" in the context of a "creation myth".

Many answers told her to post under "Biology", or that the "Theory of Evolution" was not a myth but established science.

Example #2: A teenager says "I'm completely stressed out / bored / shy [etc], what should I do?"

Many answers tell this person to post this question in the "Psychology Self-help" category.

    +++++

Personally, I enjoy answering these questions here in the philosophy category. I believe the Asker is posting here because they are hoping for a new philosophical perspective. Certainly in my own life (and I'm far, far from being a teenager), I've enjoyed developing a philosophical perspective on all aspects of life, including questions like these.

    So, what do you think?

  • Cat skin disease on his back - caused by fleas?

My cat (6 years old) won't allow anyone to pick him up, so taking him to the vet is not a possibility, and even a vet home-visit wouldn't work too well, as the vet wants to lift the cat, etc.

My cat lives mostly outside in my yard. He unavoidably has quite a few fleas, especially in the warm months. I treat him monthly with Advantage once-a-month topical (he hates it), but he still has a modest number of fleas.

This summer, my cat's fur, on the top surface of his back, has become quite thin. I can see his skin (it's grey), and his skin has some "cracks" that show blood. Is this condition likely related to the fleas, or is it another identifiable skin disease? Can anyone suggest the name of a likely skin disease.

Note: I've researched "cat skin disease" on websites, and I didn't see a common skin disease that occurs primarily on the cat's back, or that has the appearance of his skin problem. Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

  • Equations for string theory?

I'm curious to see the mathematical equations for string theory -- what is the equation for a string in 10 or 11 dimensions. I'm looking for string-theory equations written in a highly complex, detailed form, for example similar to the complex equations in this example for "Prolate Spheroidal Wave Function":

10 points to the answer with the most complex form of the equations!

  • Yahoo Answers - Technical Problems?

October 6, 2009: Access has been erratic for 3 days; I can't view my answers deeper than the most recent 10. Any idea when these tech issues will be solved?

  • Christians: Do you live according to the teachings of Jesus?

Jesus taught (Sermon on the Mount): Love your enemies, judge not that ye be not judged, turn the other cheek; live in poverty (a rich man cannot enter the Kingdom of God); live a life of fasting and prayer.

Or do you live according to Old Testament teachings: A strong patriarch at the head of the family; an eye for an eye; stoning adulterers & homosexuals; accumulating wealth?
