Night had fallen. The moon was hidden that night, and the street was dark apart from the one or two streetlights. Not a single sound could be heard. The man walked down the street, clutching his coat around him in the chilly night air. The shadows seemed to follow him as he went. “Quit being foolish, it’s only another five blocks.” He chided himself. He cast a glance over his shoulder every now and then, as if sensing he was being followed. Glancing at his watch, the man cursed and increased his pace. He turned down a dark alley.

A figure loomed from the shadows behind the man, and another from behind a dumpster down the street. The second man gestured down the alleyway, and the first one nodded. This is the mark he thought to himself. The second man drew his gun, and while he did this, the first man slipped past him into the alley

i was wondering how i should change it

Chapter I

I was breathing harder then I ever had. For a moment I began to slow down, but I heard the echo of the demons brutally sharp claws clacking against the marble floor, and picked up my pace. My chest was on fire and my left leg was burning from where the beast’s talon had punctured my calf muscle.

“What the **** was that?” I silently asked myself “I���ve never seen anything like that.” I sprinted toward the end of the hallway towards the security room. Only one or two of the guards would be sitting in there, monitoring the cameras, seeing as the rest of them were back there, ripped apart by that beast.

The monstrosity was drawing closer. I saw the security room at the end of the hall, maybe fifty yards away. As if sensing my intentions, the creature began running faster, almost doubling its pace. I tried to sprint faster, but I was burned out. Then I pictured the bodies back in that vault, and I poured on the afterburners.

Safety was drawing nearer with each step, but I could tell it was hopeless. It was at least another thirty yards. “Probably more” I said to myself. Then it happened. The creature’s claw caught my foot. I tripped, and I slid another five yards. I knew I didn’t have time to get up, and the beast was right on top of me, so I began crawl.

As I was crawling, I saw my last hope hanging on the wall: A bright red fire extinguisher. As soon as my hands closed around the handle, I heard it screeching to a halt, directly behind me. I whipped around to face the vile abomination, just as it swiped the spot where it was with its cruel talons. I scrambled away, attempting to put some distance between it and myself.

Advancing toward me, the beast’s lips dripped with saliva. It dragged the razor sharp claws across the marble floor, as if sharpening them, and sparks flew. I saw the beast tensing, preparing to strike.

Suddenly, it pounced. With all my strength, I brought the fire extinguisher crashing down onto its head. I started to get to my feet as it was momentarily stunned. Then I was limping back. The creature was shaking its head around for some reason.

“What? Did I knock it’s brain loose or something?” I wondered to myself.

Then it’s lips curled back into a snarl and I realized its teeth were locked together. It was slamming its head against the wall trying to loosen them. In it’s blind rage, it had completely forgotten about me. “This could be my lucky break!” I quietly slid away from the beast as it flailed around. As I slowly inched away, I heard a sickening noise, as the creatures jaws wrenched apart to reveal its hellish mouth.

It seemed to be all teeth. As the beast came closer I couldn’t help but imagine those teeth ripping through my flesh. I emerged from my trance as the creature leapt towards my throat. I quickly jammed the fire extinguisher down its horrid throat. The beast tried to close its mouth. It squeezed its jaws as hard as it could and

BOOM!

I was completely unprepared for the blast. A violent shockwave reduced the floor under the monster, and the walls surrounding to dust, filling the hallway. I just sat there for a few seconds, in shock. The cloud of debris still clouded my sight, my ears were ringing from the blast, and marble dust filled my mouth and nostrils. Then it occurred to me. The extinguisher was a compressed air model. All extinguishers in museums were, probably because the curators didn’t want people spewing chemicals all over the exhibits. It must’ve bit the canister so hard that it ruptured and blew up. “Yes! It’s dead!” I shouted triumphantly, and then I erupted into a fit of wracking coughs.

I dragged myself over to the wall and used it as a support to get up. My hand slipped off of the handle and I fell back down. I got up on my feet, and tried to limp toward the door, but I could barely drag my leg behind me. It felt like something was stuck in my thigh. I looked down and saw a three-inch-long piece of shrapnel from the extinguisher. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to walk with it sticking out of my leg. “One…two…. three AHGHHHHHHHHHHH. SON OF A *****!”

A twisted, jagged hook on the end of the metal ripped the wound wide open. But I’d deal with that later, I told myself. Right now, I just wanted to get to the security room.
