  • How do I prevent a GFI outlet from cutting power to all my other outlets when it pops?

I am required to have a GFI outlet above my sink (rather than a regular outlet) by code. The problem is when it pops it breaks the circuit and all outer outlets in my kitchen lose power as a result of the circuit being broken. Is there a way to fix this without running new wires and putting that outlet on its own circuit? Sometimes I come home and my freezer food is thawed due to the refrigerator outlet not working due to the popping of the GFI :-(

  • Can I use my laptops built in camera for home security?

I have a relatively new Toshiba with windows 7. I would like to be able to activate the camera in someway so that I can view it from my Iphone 5. Is there an app or program to do this? I would prefer not to have to pay any fees. Altho purchasing an egg cam or motion detector could be option since it would be nice to be alerted on my Iphone if someone entered my home. Also is there a way to record this video if need be such as if there was an intruder?

  • How do I know if I need to upgrade my modem/router/internet speed?

When watching Putlocker (a cloud based movie site) I experience poor quality/lag as opposed to some of my friends while watching the exact same movie on the same site. The video kinda looks like someone drew a cartoon movie in the pages of a book and as you quickly flip the pages it forms a little movie...basically the movies look like a bunch of still pictures strung together. First off I have Chromecast which Im starting to think is not compatible with Putlocker since when I disconnect the Chromecast and hard-wire my com to the tv this problem is diminished greatly tho still somewhat noticeable. Several people suggested since I have the slowest internet speed which is 2megs. I should upgrade with my cable company to 15megs. Do I need to do this or is 2megs. plenty? Someone else suggested I get a docsis 3.0 modem instead of the 2.0 I have but again unless I upgrade my internet speed first I believe there is no purpose in doing this since the 3.0 is for faster internet speeds. Also someone suggested that I get a duel band wireless router as opposed to the single band I have now. Their reasoning is that since my household has 3 Iphones, an Ipad, a laptop, and a Chromecast that perhaps my wireless router is overwhelmed. Im pretty sure its not my laptop since its relatively new. Also would hard-wiring my wireless router help improve this at all? Thoughts? And input on technical requirements for Putlocker/cloud based movies to work optimally? Remember the movies are not technically "downloading" since they are cloud based. Thank you.

  • When I hook up my lap top to my tv the screen saver shows but not my icons. Why?

I recently hooked up my laptop to my tv for the first time in the hopes I could watch Youtube videos and stuff. I am using a vga cord and Im sure everything is hooked up right because I can see my screen saver from the laptop on the tv screen. However the icons from the laptop dont show on the tv screen. Also when open any pages on my computer all I can see on the tv screen is the same screen saver on even tho I might currently be watch a video on the laptop. And yes I do have the computer screen set to duplicate. I tried setting the computer settings to a lower resolution 600x800 I believe but that didnt work either. What am I missing?

  • Why would buoyancy decrease at greater depth?

I was watching 60Minutes about the new sport of deep water diving. The commentator stated that as the diver reaches a depth of 70 feet or so his body loses buoyancy and he can then almost free fall downward without having to paddle so hard to go in a downward direction. Why would this be so? I would think that the deeper you go the more pressure to push you upwards so therefor buoyancy would increase? What is the correlation of depth to buoyancy? I do know that salt water makes things more buoyant but Im not sure if his comment had any reference to this altho it was in the ocean.

  • I am looking for drink ideas with a moose theme?

I am now managing a bar called The Moose. I was thinking of having drink specials with a theme. For instance perhaps one can be called the Bullwinkle. Also maybe a Moosejaw (famous city in Canada) and a Marty the Moose (in reference to the movie Vacation). I have only a standard bar liquor supply. So without getting too fancy on the liquor or ingredients can someone suggest what I should make these drinks out of or if you have any other suggestions for moose drink names? Perhaps something with antlers in the name? I cant think of anything else or how to concoct these drinks that are being invented. Someone with good bartending skills would be a help. By the way i dont mind just renaming a less popular previously created drink with one of my names if I can get away with it as a last resort.

  • A good website that can show maps of the changing of Russian territory through out the 1900s to present?

Russia took over many territories and countries through out the 1900s while trying to expand. Later after the Berlin Wall came done they released most of what they took. There are many sites that offer old maps but many are hard to read and many dont show borders from one region or country to another. Does anyone know of a good website that can offer me easy to comprehend maps that can show the expansion and then subsequent reduction of Russia's territory through out the 1900s? If it had a brake down by year that would be great as I could then see how the territories grow then once again shrink. I would even settle for Youtube video if is specialized in Russian expansion in Europe and Asia without getting off the subject too much. Thank you.

  • Is there no time in the expanse beyond where the universe has expanded from the big bang thus far?

I ask this because I have read that time is a measure of change and before the big bang their was no change taking place so therefore no time. Since beyond where the universe has expanded currently (including its light) that area would still be absent of change, so I would assume will still at absolute zero since no light or microwave energy has yet reached it. Would that then also mean that time has not reached those areas yet as well?

  • Is there a limit to how small the brain of an intelligent extra terrestrial being could be?

First off I asked this in the a space forum and didnt get many responses so I thought I would try in a few other forums.

By intelligent I mean at least intelligent as as humans if not more so. I know we dont use all are brain cells or even need them all but at what point would a brain be deemed to small to with too few cells or neurons to function as a higher life form? Im guessing something with the head the size of a cat? Or am I off and could a vast amount of intelligence and knowledge be possessed by an alien life form with a brain as small as a mouse or smaller if engineered properly thru evolution? For instance look how much knowledge we can fit in a microchip after all. Ill assume that a tiny brain with limited brain cells would either have to grow at some point to advance or certain functions such as Language or Memory or Problem solving would be lacking in lieu of others?

Just to clarify by intelligent I meant possibly having self awareness and able to recognize other intelligent beings...or even be able to master space travel for that matter. I understand that intelligence is relative. I had several people suggest that we however may not even be able to comprehend an alien brain and that an alien life form may not even be carbon based or that it may not even have brain cells since its brain may be a gelatinous mass or membrane. I know its a bizarre question but any thoughts please?

  • Saluting edicate and cellphone question.?

Question..is it improper edicate for an officer to be on a cellphone while saluting? If he turns a corner and a soldier salutes him unexpectedly what is proper?...should he say hold on a second and put the phone to his side while saluting...or is it ok to just keep the phone to his ear (providing the cellphone isnt in his saluting hand) and then complete the salute? If he is walking in an open area and sees a soldier approaching should he proactively put his phone at his side and tell the other party to hold a min so that he can then salute? My friend showed me a pic of Obama exiting a helicopter while being on a cell phone and subsequently saluting a Marine. He said this is disrespectful to the marine. I disagree because isnt the point of the salute for the Marine to show respect to the president who is his commander in chief and not vice verse?

  • Could disease and virus's be eradicated in the following the scenario?

Several hundred years in the future the Earth begins colonizing other planets but before the colonists are allowed to board their massive spacecraft taking them 20 light years away they are screened thoroughly and placed in individual quarantine for several weeks to insure they are have no communicable disease or virus. Assume they board the flight and are now a few months into the mission. Also assume the spacecraft is sterile unlike a carnival cruse ship and there is no Norovirus aboard. Aside from genetic disease such (Parkinsons just as an example) is there any way for a cold, flu or similar virus to manifest itself from the human body or would they be in essence eradicated from the future home planet of the colonists? To go a step further imagine all potential colonists also were chose on the premise they have never had such a disease as Chicken pox. Would that mean that Chicken pox and Shingles would thus also be eliminated from their future home planet as well? Ill assume there could however be other virus's born of our bodies in the future that are yet to exist tho.

Also I know this is more of a medical question but I find the deep thinkers in the Astronomy section and I received no answers to this question when I posted it in the medical disease section.

  • A list of ten or so books in order from first to last dealing with Quantum physics/mechanics for beginners?

I am fascinated with the subject of quantum physics and like to watch shows on it when possible. I am rather intelligent in several areas but have no mathematical background whatsoever. My highest math was pre-algebra in high school 25 years ago. So anything with excessive math or formulas would be useless to me. I would like everything in layman's terms or as basic as possible. Someone had mentioned "An Elegant Universe" to me before. Any suggestions for good beginner reading?

  • Energy can neither be created nor destroyed so...?

This isnt necessarily an Astronomy question (and actually its a few questions) however I usually find the deepest thinkers in here. I actually have my own view on this because Ive pondered it many times but would like to hear the views of others. So my question is since energy can neither be created or destroyed and all thoughts are electrical impulses. Could not your thoughts and all youve seen or heard be permanently part of the Universe even after your death? I know radio waves can go into space forever but after several light years they become lost in static..that doest mean they are not there..we just dont have the technology (and may never) to filter them out from all the other noise. Also Sharks and certain other animals have the capability to pick electrical impulses from prey. In theory could not a life form evolve over millions and millions of years to pick up other electrical impulses such as brain waves? In theory giving it the capability to read minds? We can build machines and computers to pick up brain waves but is not the human mind the best machine/computer designed to this day? The particular brain waves can even tell us things such as if a person is thinking happy or sad thoughts and so on. Sure computers may be able to calculate math problems quicker but they are only as good as the software we design. Try to build a robot that can walk a tightrope as well as a human and see whos brain is more advanced. (at least at this point). So could not a highly highly advanced human (or alien) mind with say a few million more years to advance than what we have had to this point in essence develop the ability to pick up brains waves. Obviously this would have to be a very high life form to decipher the actually thoughts unlike a shark but is it not theoretically possible?
