  • Ice fishing scouting help?

I have been open water fishing since I was a wee lad and have become proficient in freshwater angling ever since. However, if I am to consider myself a 'master fisherman' I do believe I need to broaden my horizons to ice fishing. Too long have I stared out upon the wintery Maine scenery and wished the ice would go away so I can hunt and fight from an aluminum boat.

So, I picked up a few ice traps the other day and went with a friend. He drilled a few holes and set up the bait and sat with some nice cold Moosehead. We weren't catching ****, so I asked him questions about why he chose this spot and hole locations. He didn't have an answer. I have asked several 'seasoned' ice fisherman and I do believe there are more 'ice drinkers' than ice fisherman.

How are you supposed to scout for fish when ice fishing? Surely, you don't just dig a hole, plop bait and cross your fingers... do you? I want to catch fish AND a buzz... not just the latter. Any suggestions?

Target fish: lake trout, white perch, salmon, bass (both)

  • Must haves for few day hiking excursion?

Boreal Forrest mountainous terrain spring weather.

really well equipped with proper clothing, boots and knife. Also have proper pack and first aid, emergency equip, fire, flashlight, sleep equipment, foodstuffs and all the other normal stuff. We do a lot of day hiking and am a general outdoorsman. I would like to know what other things you wouldn't go on a long hike without that just make your trip better (I.e. an axe). Things worth taking the time and effort to haul along. Any expert suggestions from experience?

  • Want to catch a big pike?

I just moved to an area that has pike and while out the other day for bass, I hooked into one that broke my 20lb braid. I am a bass fisherman throughin and throughout and this was the biggest thing I have ever hooked in to. I didn't fight it properly because I was too perplexed by the weight of the fish to make the proper adjustments! It was amazing. all i did was hold the tip up and stare into the water until the line snapped and when it did i just stood there and kept staring motionless.

I was using a steel leader and the line broke not the knot so my gear is suitable I was just taken aback. My question is: I want to catch a huge pike now and people have pulled 30 pounders out of this place. I did manage to pull a few 8 ish pounders out of what I would call pickerel water (shalllow, weedy) but I want a monster.

What kind of water do big pike hang out in and is there a special kind of lure I should use? Does the big bait big fish rule apply to these apex predators?

  • What kind of map do I purchase for GPS?

I own a garmn etrex vista and would like to see some detail on my maps. I only have the basemap that came with the unit currently. I am new to the gps world so any explainations would be helpful.

I am trying to navigate in deep woods/ water and would like my unit to display dirt roads, terrain, and also detailed shapes of body's of water. The basemap detail is poor so there just HAS to be something better. Is there one map that does all of this or am I being too picky on detail cravings? Thanks all

  • making your own dog food?

I tried to ask this question earlier and got pretty unsatisfactory answers...

here is a basic dog food recipe I picked up from a few websites.

    1 cup meat = 50%

    1/2 cup grain = 25%

    1/2 cup veggies = 25%

when I measure the rice (grain) do I measure 1/2 a cup of uncooked rice or 1/2 a cup of cooked rice?

Because when 1/2 cup of uncooked rice is cooked it is a whole lot more than 1/2 cup. Nobody ever sspecify's this issue.

  • Homemade dog food question?

I have been searching for a simple homemade dogfood recipe and here is what I have gotten for a general ratio: 50% meat 25% grains 25% veggies

However, if I make this with rice does that mean cooked rice or uncooked rice

    example:

    1 cup of meat = 50%

1/2 cup of rice =25% cooked or uncooked rice?

    1/2 cup of veggies 25%

  • 1 carat diamond ring?

So, I just recently put an engagement ring on hold for a black friday sale. It is a 1 carat diamond ring with a few smaller ones on the sides yellow gold. $400!

My girlfriend and I stumbled across this one day and she remarked on how much she liked it, however she does not expect me to propose for another few years so me even buying a ring is unexpected. Well, the ring is going to be mine soon but I heard her say that the ring did not have a lifetime warranty which turned her off a little. Should I be concerned about this lifetime warranty? I think this is a freakin sweet deal but not unless somebody tells me otherwise.

This ring talk was completely innocent banter which we have been dancing around for years so she wasn't trying to drop any hints or anything like that.

I would appreciate some feedback from you ladies who know your stuff! Thanks.

  • cat licked its frontline application?

I know it won't really hurt the cat, although I will be sure to monitor its actions...

My actual question is to see if anybody knows if the frontline application will still work, or did he lick it all off. is that possible? This stuff is expensive and I would like to know if it is still going to work. Thanks

  • government regulated internet?

I need some ideas on why the internet should be regulated by the government (debate class). I don't necessarily agree but regardless I need to present a solid case.

    Hints:

    child pornography

People surfing the net looking for illegal love acts

    pornography in general etc

I have more but would like to see what you can also think of. Thanks

  • 5 day hiking trip equipment?

I've read all the responses to this kind of question but there is never an answer to the actual question. What would you pack in your bag if you were running solo. I don't need to know any weight things... simply the important items in your own experienced bag and what brand works the best if you could.

Also if you say "first aid kit" you don't need to tell me everything that is in it. Sorry for the detailed question, I just want to save your time too. Thanks for your help

  • How do I surf the web anonymously?

I have heard of proxy servers but never used one before. I have also heard that I.P. addresses are not traceable anyways. Is it true, or do I need to find a proxy to surf through?

I guess if you do know any proxys then I would need some that don't steal my information or give me pop-ups. Thanks

  • Custom made survival pack items?

This'll be the third time I've asked this question because I keep getting list after list of basic survival items. I already have a backpack with basic elements of survival. I also have a lot of 'handy items" that I have come to enjoy carrying with me (i.e. candle, glue, nails, needle and thread, etc) that aren't necessary for survival.

I wanted to see if anybody could suggest any more handy items they have come to discover is quite a luxury when they need it. Just some straight up good ideas is all.

Some good ideas from my other answered questions include: toilet paper, several yards of duct tape wrapped around nails, a few nips of alcohol

Please don't bother answering this if you are going to copy and paste a list from another site. Thanks
