  • Do we really need representatives anymore?

It was recently pointed out to me that, since virtually everyone in America has a cell phone, we could all easily vote on every single issue before us. We could, for instance, text our votes to a supercomputer that would know instantly whether or not a bill passed. We could propose our own ideas that way, and with the internet, which nearly all Americans have access to as well, we could become informed about issues (using official government websites so as to limit misinformation). Granted, I can see some kinks that would have to be worked out before the system ran flawlessly, but couldn't we all eventually represent ourselves in a true democracy?

  • What would happen if absolutely no one were to vote in an election?

If all of the American citizens refused to settle for "the lesser of two evils" and hold out until someone they truly admired ran:

Would they have to keep holding elections, would the incumbents hold their positions, or would something else entirely happen?

If the incumbents would stay in office, what if it were a presidential election and the president had already served two terms?

  • With the new health care bill, will we have to buy health insurance out of our own pockets?

I've read that there's supposed to be money provided to us to buy the mandatory health insurance. How is that going to work? How are they going to enforce that? By when will we have to buy the insurance? Will it matter who we buy it from?

Also, I read that the government is taking over college loans. Are they planning on lowering interest for students?

I don't entirely understand how this is going to affect me (a poor college student with no health insurance and no money to buy it, and planning on taking out a loan next year). Can someone explain the facts to me, and/or possibly provide a link to a copy of the bill?

  • How would I go about running for a magistrate court position in the upcoming election?

I live in New Mexico and went on the state website, but was unable to find anything useful. I would greatly appreciate specific forms (or links to forms) and procedures for the state of New Mexico.

  • What is the value of this Barbie Comic Book?

While cleaning, we have come across a "Barbie Fashion" comic book. This appears to be from 1990-ish and is still in its original packaging. It comes with a "Barbie Comics Pink Card" and cost $1.00 originally. There are apparently similar comics that sold for $1.99, but this one was a "first issue", sold for $1.00, and has the UPC code on the lower left-hand corner of the cover (# 7148601580). The back cover is an advertisement for the Konami Laserscope.

Authoritative websites for this would also be appreciated.

  • What is everything "dekwa" could translate to in English? Does "dek wa" have any meaning?

I know there seem to be a few languages that use this, and I'm uncertain as to how many there are total, hence it appearing on Y!A. Also, I'd appreciate knowing which language goes with which translation. Thanks.

  • So where do all the phone info companies go for the info that they sell the people?

For instance, if you go to search for a phone number that's unlisted, an ad will inform you that they can give you all the information about that person and many other people all for one low price of ____. Surely they're getting their information from somewhere though. What is their source?

  • Flying tortises at 10:19?

So I had a dream early this morning that I was in my bedroom looking at pictures on my wall that suddenly seemed possessed by something evil. I was actually getting freaked out in my dream by these pictures. Then I looked outside my window and saw a blue star and thought "that must be Sirius", but then I saw a red star and thought "no, THAT must be Sirius", but then both of those and many other blue and red stars were coming closer and turned out to be tortises in blue and red wing sets (some had blue and some red) and when they hit the ground, they lost their wings and walked off. I knew then that it was a "night of the flying tortises", and that it had happened in the past and was always unpredictable when it would occur. Seeking to find a pattern, I looked at the clock and saw it was 10:19, which I know has some significance (it didn't change at all when I glanced back at it). My room was still dark, but I rushed through it to the main hall (the "evil" pictures had lost their power)

  • Have you ever been touched by an angel?

My friend's daughter apparently was... he seems to have trusted her with Gabriel for the night; turned out to be a mistake. Now he's trying to get a class action lawsuit going...

  • Does I-25 go to Boulder, CO, and if it does, can I get on from Durango?

Mapquest routed me on state roads from Aztec, NM to Boulder, CO, but it looks like I-25 runs right next to it. Since it's likely to be inclement weather, an interstate seem to be a wiser choice if possible. If it does run to Boulder, can I get on from some point in Durango? I'll be coming up from 550, where would I go once I hit Durango to get on to the interstate?

  • Curse on Lake Ronkonkoma?

My sister and I grew up on this myth; my dad would scare me before every trip out to the lake as a kid. Anyway, I think it's interesting and thought I'd share. What do you guys think?

My dad does claim that for as long as he lived there, at least one man drowned there every year... synchronicity?

  • Why do so many people assume god to be the Christian concept of god?

Granted, most people in America are either heavily indoctrinated into Christian dogma or had it forced on them as a kid (also, does forcing dogma count as religious rape?), but the concept of god can be rather positive when a person gets beyone the concept of an old white guy with a beard judging people from a throne... so many people associate god with "he"- I'd think any all-encompassing force would be beyond gender and beyond judging other people, don't you?

Maybe if we used the term "universe" or "id" instead? Or would people just make the universe into a judgemental being and try to inspire fear with the universe then?

  • Can stress cause blood in feces?

Yesterday and today I've noticed blood in my feces. This isn't the first time I've had this, but I think I have been pretty stressed every time. The water in the bowl was all red and there was lots of blood on the paper. If anyone has had this before or happens to be a professional in this field, I'd really like to know: Is it caused by stress? If it is, it it ok or something I really need to do something about? If it isn't, what is it likely to be? Also, any natural treatments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Southwestern geologists- would you please enlighten me about the Bisti badlands?

I need to learn a lot about the Bisti- geologic history and terrain especially. If you happen to know of a good, easy to understand source or two, i'd greatly appreciate it. Also, if you happen to know a few interesting facts you wouldn't mind spouting off, I'd love to hear those too. I really need a source that's beginner-friendly and provides a lot of information though. Thanks.

Just need to make sure since it's been one of those weeks for me where I've been wrong about everything I thought and I can't afford to mess this up. Thanks.

  • A dream where I almost hit rock bottom; what does it mean?

I'm not sure if I should take any meaning from this or not snce I was both partying and thus zoned out a lot yesterday and practicing jiu-jitsu before that. It could therefore conceivably be my mind just reliving the events. If it's not, I still don't know what to make of it. Help?

I was grappling with someone while letting my mind wander. Suddenly, I was aware of what I was doing and got a good position. I got my opponent's arm between my legs and decided to hold on to it and roll us both down a hill. He said I wouldn't be able to do it, but I kept trying and started pulling him along. As we were approaching the bottom, he asked me if I really wanted to go all the way down and I realized I didn't and let go and helped him up right before rolling over an edge to the bottom. As we were walking back up the hill, I saw one of my co-workers who's a quasi-supervisor but a friend too walking up a sidewalk path off to the right.
