My name is Dylan. I live in the UK. I like graphic design, web design and Flash design, coding, playing video games (such as GTA) and WWE. I drum and remix songs, and also occasionally wrestle. I'm into anything computerish, and I know a decent amount about them, enough to help others with their problems.

  • Maersk Triple-E - What Are These Structures on the Deck Called?

    Hello,

I'm studying ships, and, more specifically, Maerk's Triple-E class of container ship - Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller. A photo of the magnificent ship with the structures in question clearly visible (the ship is empty), can be seen here - http://www.joc.com/sites/default/files/field_featu...

I notice that there are red structures that stretch the entire breadth of the ship and also run most of its length that I can only describe as "container separators." They're also present on the older E-class (such as Emma Maersk) However, when looking at other container ships by rival shipping companies, I don't see these structures.

Judging by photos and estimated calculations from the standard TEU, they are roughly 12.5 m (41 ft) in height. The red paint used matches the red of the deck where the containers sit; that's why I believe they're part of the container stacking system on the ships (I could be wrong).

I have tried looking all over the Internet, searching with a variety of keywords, but nothing seems to match.

I was wondering if there were any people here with experience in the shipping/engineering industry that may understand what these are?

    Thanks!

  • GPU Question for a Productivity and Gaming PC (2x 2 GB, or 1x 4 GB?)?

    Hello,

I am constructing a brand new computer that will be used for productivity tasks such as web development, graphic/web design, 3D modelling, handling extremely large databases on web servers, video editing and, of course, gaming.

In terms of games, I mainly have my eyes set on Minecraft, GTA IV and GTA V when it comes to the PC, although there may be others that I might have missed (Battlefield, CoD and other such games do not interest me).

So, I'm stuck between a GPU choice.

    - Both are exactly the same model, and by the same vendor

    - Both share the same TDP (180 W)

    - The 4 GB version has a slightly higher boost frequency (1.11 vs. 1.10 GHz)

    - Both require a 500-watt PSU

    a) 2 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X Windforce 3X - 2 GB GDDR5 (£147.92 x 2 = £295.84)

    b) 1 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X Windforce 3X - 4 GB GDDR5 (£186.42)

I'm also thinking of the price difference - are two in CrossfireX worth the extra money over a single card with more VRAM? I've been reading over the 'net that CrossFireX has some problems at the moment and not many programs support a dual-GPU setup anyway.

My PSU is the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 W Gold. I should mention that my current PSU is just a choice, and I haven't purchased it yet.

    Thank you!

  • Is a Dark Website Design Good for a Technology-based Website?

    Hello,

I'm in the process of revamping my website and I wanted other opinions (preferably from other web developers/designers) as to whether dark-based designs are a good idea for a technology-based website such as mine?

It currently looks like this http://dylricho.com/ but I plan on removing the content texture for a more simplistic black background with slight transparency to let the space-themed background seep through.

I'm also working on redoing the navigation to rely on imagery less, and instead focus more on HTML and CSS elements.

I also plan on including a light theme option for those who want it as a recent study showed that 44% of web users preferred light-based themes, although the study didn't specify what types of websites these were.

Overall, does the design work well? If not, could you suggest improvements? (I'm aware of broken links.)

It was recently the website's third birthday, and this revamp is to bring it to a serious technological market.

    Thank you,

    Dylan.

  • Space between Numbers and Units of Measure?

    Hello,

I am running a tech website which lists specifications of products. Because of this, I'm tied between opting for the standard form of English (whichever it may be), and ease of legibility.

For example, storage listings could be:

    1GB RAM

    16GB internal memory

    32GB expandable memory via microSDHC

    1 GB RAM

    16 GB internal memory

32 GB expandable memory via microSDHC

    -----

Now, as I'm trying to decide between the English grammar standard and an easily-legible layout for my users, I can't decide which to use.

Personally, no spacing looks easier to read, while I'm thinking that the standard for English grammar is the use of spaces for digital units such as gigabytes, megabits and pixels.

Can anyone shed any light on this subject, and help me decide?

    Thanks.

  • Explain the working out for 7 + 7 / 7 - 7 + 7 x 7?

Hello. I've been puzzled by this and have been trying to work it out using BODMAS. Unfortunately, I'm not getting what the calculator is getting, which is 50.

Could someone please explain where I'm going wrong, and how to get 50?

    -----

Here is what I've tried so far:

    7 / 7 = 1

    1 x 7 = 7

    7 + -7 = 0

    0 + 7 = 7

    7 / 7 = 1

    1 x 7 = 7

    7 - 7 = 0

    0 + 7 + 7 = 14

    14 / 7 = 2

    2 x 7 = 14

    14 + 7 = 21

    21 - 7 = 14

    28 / 7 = 4

    4 x 7 = 28

    28 - 7 = 21

    Kind regards,

    Dylan.

  • Another Grammar Question?

    Howdy,

"It must have took you a long time."

"It must have taken you a long time."

(Speaking of an event that has already happened.)

Which one is grammatically correct? If they're both correct, can they be used interchangeably?

  • Help understanding the Aufbau principle?

    Hello,

I'm studying chemistry at college and I'm trying to clear up some confusion between electron shells and how many electrons each one can hold.

While researching, I came across the "Aufbau principle". Could someone explain to me what it is? I originally thought that electrons must fill a shell before another one could be used.

For example, in a PowerPoint, my lecturer has stated that bromine's electron configuration is 2,8,8,7. This doesn't add up to the atomic number, 35 and I thought the 3rd shell could hold 18, not 8.

If it can indeed hold 18, then why in a different example like caesium, has she wrote its electron configuration as 2,8,8,18,18,1?

This is all really confusing me and stopping me from completing a task in my assignment.

So, as a summary, I'm asking these questions:

    1) What is the 'Aufbau principle' in simple terms so I understand?

    2) Why did my lecturer write the electron configurations for bromine and caesium like that if the 3rd shell can hold 18 electrons?

    Thank you,

    Dylan.

  • I Have a BTEC Level 2 Grading Question?

    Hello,

    I've checked Edexcel's website here:

    http://www.edexcel.com/i-am-a/student/re%E2%80%A6

And I came across this table:

    http://dylricho.com/college/Table.PNG

Does a Distinction or Merit in a BTEC Level 2 Diploma course equal out to a Distinction* in a BTEC Level 2 Certificate course?

    Thank you,

  • BTEC Level 2 Certificate and Diploma?

    Hi all,

Two years ago (UK, Year 11), I undertook a BTEC Level 2 Certificate course in applied science, equivalent to a GCSE-level course. Unfortunately for me and my friend, the class was full of rude imbeciles who didn't want to learn and we had a mixture of 3 teachers. One of them was new on the job and kept repeatedly losing mine and my friend's work. The other two were experienced teachers in the college but simply couldn't teach because the class would consistently interrupt. Sure, people were sent out but this was probably 3/4 of the class that was causing problems. This was compulsory education so people weren't instantly kicked out of school. I ended up with an underwhelming pass (GCSE-equivalent to a 'C'). Science is one of my favourite subjects so I was disappointed with myself and I still am, even though it theoretically wasn't my fault.

Now, last year, I successfully completed another BTEC Level 2 Diploma course in IT and enjoyed it as this was a different college (Leicester College) and people were more mature. This year, I'm focusing on improving my applied science grade from my previous college at Leicester College again because of how well last year went. I thought, if I'm given the opportunity, why not take it?

Well, I understand that this is a very similar course. They're both GCSE-level and both BTEC so there are no exams (even though that isn't important to me). This course at my previous college, covered 4 units, 3 of which were core units. The other one was forensic science. I'm retaking the same course at Leicester College but it now involves 10 units, where 3 of them are the same core units as the previous course. The forensic science unit is also probably included but under a different name.

Now I've got that out of the way, I'd like to ask my question. I included the above so that this question had a bit of background to it, in case that helped with the answer at all.

If person A came out of the BTEC Level 2 Certificate course with an overall Distinction* (GCSE-equivalent is 'A*') and person B came out of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma course with an overall Distinction (GCSE-equivalent is 'A'), would they be equal? I'm eager to find out how the BTEC grading system works.

    Thank you,

    Dylan.

  • English Grammar Help - 'Came' or 'Come'?

This is stylized as something that has just previously happened a few minutes ago.

Which one is correct in that context? I'm a native English speaker, just trying to get better at it.

"John just come running to me."

If they both can be used as past tense verbs, could you kindly explain what the difference is?

  • Two Questions Regarding a Laptop BIOS (AMI)?

    1) Does anyone know of any websites that list supported processors for BIOS versions such as mine (AMI 203)?

I've tried AMI's website and even their support but they are useless. I've also tried ASUS but with no luck.

    2) If I was to add CPU support for the Core 2 Duo T9500 into the AMI 203 BIOS (if it isn't already supported), what would be the potential issues with that? Surely adding a few lines of code couldn't kill the BIOS.

    Thanks.

  • Is this still a worthy upgrade in 2012?

I've had this laptop since April 2009, powered by a Celeron M 575 with 1GB RAM. Recently, I upgraded the RAM further by doubling it to 2GB.

For the past 6 months, I've been considering an even further and *better* upgrade by doubling the RAM again to 4GB (DDR2) and replacing the Celeron with a Core 2 Duo T9500.

This upgrade will cost £150 at the most. Do you think this is a worthy upgrade, considering there are newer laptops out there with the new Core iX range? Also, what sort of performance increase can I expect from the Celeron M 575 with 2GB RAM to Core 2 Duo T9500 with 4GB RAM?

The laptop is used for web development and graphic design (Photoshop etc.)

    >> Celeron M 575

    Clock frequency - 2.00GHz

    L2 cache - 1MB

    FSB speed - 667MHz

    >> Core 2 Duo T9500

    Clock frequency - 2.60GHz

    L2 cache - 6MB

    FSB speed - 800MHz

  • I Have an Irritating Penis?

    Hello,

For the past 5 days minimum, I've been suffering from this annoying irritation in my penis. It might be the urethra but I'm not 100% certain.

    - I'm a virgin so it can't be an STD

    - Masturbating seems to temporarily 'cure' or 'scratch' the irritation

    - Going for a pee sometimes helps but other times, it's painful (like stinging)

    - I've never taken any drugs

I do have a girlfriend but like I said, I'm a virgin and so is she. We share a mature relationship.

Any ideas on what it could be? If you need more info, I'll edit and add.

    Thanks,

    Dylan.

  • CPU Lithography in Simple Terms?

    Hello,

Could someone please tell me what 'lithography' and 'die size' mean in computing processor terms. Please explain it as easy and as descriptively as possible, as although I'm not a newbie with computers, I am fairly new in the CPU area, and I've tried looking up on Wikipedia and Google, but they all use words that I don't understand...

I know that a smaller number is better for performance, and draws less heat, but what exactly is it?

    Thank you,

  • Would a 45nm CPU work in the same socket as a 65nm CPU?

My computer is an ASUS X58L notebook (not the X58Le). I have contacted ASUS and they say that the TDP is auto-adjustable.

My current processor is a Celeron M 575 and is in the PPGA478 socket. It came with the laptop, but ASUS list alternatives that go up to a Core 2 Duo T5900. Furthermore, all of these CPUs seem to be of the Merom codename. They're all 65nm CPUs.

The successor to my laptop, the slightly-tweaked X58Le also supports three additional 45nm Penryn CPUs in addition to the 65nm CPUs of the original X58L: (Clock speed/L2/FSB)

    - Pentium DC T4200 (2.00/1M/800)

    - Pentium DC T6400 (2.00/2M/800)

    - Core 2 Duo T6600 (2.20/2M/800)

    So I have four questions:

    1) Can I use a 45nm CPU in my laptop?

    2) If I can, then could I use a Core 2 Duo T9500 (2.60/6M/800) notebook CPU, although it isn't listed as an option on either model, but it is within the maximum FSB speed offered, the same socket and the same range of TDP as the CPUs offered by ASUS?

    3) If not, then what about a Core 2 Duo T6600 which is only listed as an option on the X58Le model? Surely if it's listed as an option on this model, it should work with mine as well?

    4) If the answer is 'no' to all three of the above, what kind of a difference can I expect if I go with the highest option available for my laptop, a Core 2 Duo T5900 (2.20/2M/800) vs. the current CPU (2.00/1M/667)?

    Thank you for your time,

    Dylan.
